1. No microSD Card Slot: Google and Samsung really just needed a way to treat the 16GB of storage inside the Nexus S as an external microSD card because the phone sadly doesn’t support a REAL external microSD card slot. 16GB – while plentiful for some – just won’t cut it for others.

The beauty of having phones with expandable storage was the prospect of having as much as 32-48GB of storage for all of your pictures, music, videos, and whatever else you can think to cram into it. Sadly, this will not be the case if you opt for the Nexus S. That’s a big factor to consider when you’re at the point of sale December 16th.

2.Nexus S Also Missing: LED Notifications Of Any Kind: To add insult to injury, in addition to the news of the upcoming Google Nexus S missing any kind of external memory slots (microSD, etc), we’ve just found out that this supposed Nexus One successor is missing LED notifications as well. What other essential system function is it going to lose next – a phone speaker?

I am excited about Gingerbread, especially everything it is bringing under-the-hood, but the whole Nexus S situation is turning out to be kind of a disaster. Even Reto Meier, the Android engineer who confirmed the absence of any LED notification is saddened by it:

[size=13pt]Walkthrough And Hands-On With The Gingerbread UI And The New Gingerbread Keyboard In All Its Sexiness[/size]

As you may have seen, Google took the covers off Gingerbread today and released the new SDK, which allowed me to immediately jump into an emulated Gingerbread instance. After running around the new UI for a while, I’ve taken a bunch of screenshots, which you can find below, along with some of my notes.

Before I dive into the Gingerbread screenshots, here is a side-by-side comparison of the same Settings screen in Donut (1.6), Froyo (2.2), and Gingerbread (2.3):

As you can see, not much has changed since Froyo, except most of the elements got darker and/or greener. Below, you will see the new checkbox, dropdown, and radio button styles, which are also darker and more defined. Frankly, I like the new UI.



When you reach the end of a list during scrolling, you now get a nice orange glow effect on the bottom:



The Application setting screen has also undergone some revamping – you can see a funnel-like UI element on the bottom and a nice status bar showing free/used space. There is also more application info now, which shines a lot more light on what each entry in the list is doing.

The Battery use part of the settings also received a complete overhaul, which, unfortunately, we can’t yet see in full glory, as the emulator is never on battery.



The new default software keyboard is extremely sexy (click the images to see the large version, which really shows the new keyboard in all its splendor):



The dialer is now very dark and kind of gloomy looking. At first, I thought it didn’t render properly. Are we in perma-night mode?



For some reason, the Gingerbread emulator instance is CRAWLING slow. I’ve fired up the Froyo and Donut instances side by side, and while those fly pretty fast, the Gingerbread one stutters and even gave me an ANR in the browser (Application Not Responding). However, Google’s own Brian Swetland is assuring Android users that Gingerbread will be the nippiest version yet, so we have no fears in that regard.



That was a quick rundown through the new Gingerbread UI. Now I am moving on to the new features of Eclipse ADT, which are likely to make Android developers much less disgruntled (if you’ve ever developed for Android, you know how frustrating the environment can be).

Andy Rubin Teases Honeycomb-Running, Video Chat-Featuring, Dual-Core Processor-Packing Motorola Tablet

While the announcement everyone was expecting Andy Rubin to make at today’s D: Dive Into Mobile conference was already made earlier today, the head of Android operations still had a few things hidden up his sleeves, not the least of which was a dual-core Motorola tablet:



If that didn’t catch your attention, consider this: the man himself said that it will run Honeycomb, will feature video chat, and will be powered by a "dual-core 3D NVIDIA processor." Additionally, Engadget, whose editor-in-chief was sitting at the event, noticed that the tablet has no buttons at all, for better or for worse. However, to make up for it, the Honeycomb UI appears to have been greatly refined, especially the Gmail app (seen above in the picture on the left).

Unfortunately, the closest thing we got to a release date was the statement that the tablet will be "out sometime next year."

It’s got some interesting pre-release tid-bits about it:

SGS today. I was trying too upgrade the firmware today when the internet connection failed. that dreadful Downloading , . Do not disconnect target, message was on when its happened. it came up with one error mesage and i almost fainted. the fone. hanged. i then removed the battery and the Phone booted successfully. i dont intend to give it a try any time soon. i think i love the eclair nOw than ending upon with a bricked phone

LG responds saying that "the minimum requirements for Gingerbread require 1 GHz processor," hence, no update's in the cards. Well, Android engineer Romain Guy took to Twitter to drop some knowledge, saying "there's no hard minimum processor requirement for Gingerbread, trust me, if there were I'd know." In other words, whoever's manning the ship on LG's Facebook account is either sorely underinformed or showed some awful judgment in choosing a lie to justify keeping the Optimus off the upgrade path. Sure, we can understand why LG wouldn't want to temper excitement for a still-new smartphone line by telling buyers their phones won't be receiving the next version of the platform, but the least they could've done is formulated a reasonable excuse, no?

let me repeat what i said b4, the problem u're talking about is android fragmentation!
The problem, most of us think about when we talk about fragmentation is the multiple different versions of Android currently being shipped. Device makers and carriers are remarkably incapable, and this total lack of competence is only highlighted by Android. Every Android device - including the G1 - can run Froyo, Android 2.2, the latest version(gingerbread).
Sadly, device makers and carriers block the upgrade process with their immense incompetence. I can't highlight enough just how incompetent many device makers and carriers are, leading to devices shipped today that still run Android 1.5 or 1.6, and the old ones not getting updated. How difficult is it to do the update? if the dev community can port it within weeks, its just sheer laziness on their part!
But what i think is that Google really need to wield the big stick and if it does there may be accusations again of it trying to be an Overlord.
Just my two cents anyway

bro, i get it, but if fragmentation is the issue here then maybe you should

look at winmos stats and compared it to the andriod platform, the G1 was never

offficially upgrade to donut 1.6. the winmo devices on the other hand has had better

support, my now sold winmo device (Touch pro) was supported 6.1 to 6-5. i knew a friends

device that was supoort 6.0 from 5.0. in a nut shell, how do u convince clients that the andriod

platform is cost efficient, stable etc, how do you convince a lame man who wants more but doesnt

want to break the bank
