You have no regrets that the same core northerners that used you are now making your people minced meat as the days go by? You have no regrets that the same people you fought for has made Nigeria and unliveable mess it has become today? A nation rudderless and drifting to no where in particular? Mr walk around the core north and see the biting poverty and disease and tell me you are happy with what you see, and yet the easterners you tried to eliminate have risen like a Phoenix while your people perish perpetually under the sword of your overlords.
Mr Gowon look at the unenviable mess Nigeria has become and tell me who "One Nigeria"as you all like to put it has really benefited? Do you in your heart of hearts like what you see? A core northern hegemony with the minorities of the north and the poor people of the north its greatest victims.
Tell me one Nigeria is not to the benefit of the colonial masters who installed the core northerners as stooges to continue to pillage the nation by proxy to the detriment of their very own people.
I know the guilt of what you did is weighing you down you just don't want to admit it that your war and all the lives lost was all in vain. Gen Akinriade admitted so in one of his interviews some years back. Only the top guys that won that war in conjunction with imperial Britain truly benefits and are still benefitting from that war.
I am not in support of the initial coup anyways.

In your face, Ndigbo cheesy

The real villains of that war were Nwafor Orizu, Aguiyi Ironsi and Chukwuma Nzeogwu, who placed an agenda for ethnic domination ahead of personal honour and national unity, not Gowon, Ojukwu or the three million dead who were merely victims of circumstances.

Igbo people will never accept this but they continue foaming at the mouth till the end of all time. Whoever comes to equity must come with clean hands! What the north eventually did with Nigeria is the exact same thing the Igbo were scheming to do but unfortunately they got their collective fingers burnt in the process.

Granted there were a number of things Ojukwu or Gowon could have done differently but no one is above honest mistakes...

Let them blame Nzeogwu he could have chosen a bloodless coup, but he killed many innocent leader from north and south, he threw Tafa Balewa's corpse on Lagos Ibadan Express Way like a goat and blame Ojukwu for there woes for arming kid soldiers and fighting without basic supplies like food leading to millions dying due to starvation

.

My fellow bro...

Nzeogwu didn't kill Tafawa Balewa. Emmanuel Ifeajuna... a very zealous former Bendelite actually killed and dumped his lifeless body by the roadside.
Nzeogwu was actually a great non-Tribalistic fellow. He did his part of the coup by killing Sardauna while the rest of his Igbo kinsmen failed to kill Zik which messed up the whole coup. Nzeogwu hugely condemned the sentimental behaviors of his kinsmen.

Nzeogwu never really associated with the Igbos even though his parents were Igbo but, he was born and raised in Kaduna which was why his name is tagged with Major Patrick Kaduna Nzeogwu.

Sadly whichever way we see it, he killed Sarduna, and was identified as the leader of the coup.. Gedeon Okar also wasnt the one shutting about, his major part was organising the coup finding the sponsor and being transported to Radio Nigeria to make the Annoucement.. still he was pointed as the masterminder and a killer

I was in the office late in the morning when military van pulled up in the premises and some soldiers came down. They asked for me and were shown into my office by a staff. They greeted me curtly and explained that they had been sent to invite me for a meeting with the leader of that morning’s coup, Nzeogwu. I was to go in their van, they said, although I could ask someone to follow in my own csr so that he would bring me back after the meeting. I got up and went with them as they requested while my driver drove behind us.

We arrived at the military barracks housing Nzeogwu’s soldiers which had by now turned into a beehive of activity. There were many soldiers on guard, their weapons held firmly in their hand. There were also trucks parked in front of the offices; a few others came in and went out. Except for the noise of the vehicles and occasional exchange among soldiers, all was quiet and business-like. No one spoke to us as we parked and walked into the building. Eventually, I was brought before Nzeogwu and he received me with no ceremony. I sat down on a chair and he slowly began to talk.

First of all, he wanted to know where we had hidden the weapons which we were said to have imported into the country. The question really surprised me and so did the tone in which it was asked. I had not met Nzeogwu before, and had never dealt with him in any capacity whatsoever. I had, therefore, no prior expectations with regard to his personality or the questions he would ask me. Nevertheless, I had imagined that he would show a little concern about the sad events that had taken place earlier in the morning. I did not expect him to apologise for what he had done, because he in no way appeared to be unhappy about the new power and attention which he was receiving as a result of his present position. But I had expected that he would begin by justifying the killings somehow, and offering explanations as to how or why the dead leaders had to lose their lives. After all, no matter his feelings against them, they were statesmen who had once led the country and the people. Human decency and reason demanded that they should be treated with respect for their past services, especially because they had died holding their offices. One did not murder one’s national figures and dismiss the incident casually, whatever their fault. Judicial system.

Besides, I thought it was disappointing that the organizers of the military coup were only now trying to put together the reason for their action. I had never known anyone to have imported weapons into the country illegally, least of all the Sardauna. I therefore felt I had to seek further information from Nzeogwu himself before I could answer him. He explained that he heard we had bought many weapons from the Middle East, which we planned to use to wage Jihad against non-Muslims in Nigeria. That was why he now wanted to know where we kept them, he said.

In my prompt response, I told him about my ignorance in this regard. As far as I was aware, no such plans had ever been considered by any Islamic group in this country. I spoke with authority because I was the closest adviser to the Sardauna on religious matters, and at no time did he visit the Islamic countries in the Middle East without me since I became Grand Khadi. I had never known him to have discussed war in Nigeria, much less purchase weapons.

This prompted Nzeogwu to take me to ask concerning my own appointment. He could not understand, he said, why there had to be a separate court for Muslims outside the country’s judicial system. After all, Muslims were also Nigerians, and must, therefore submit to the law of the land like everyone else. ‘As for Grand Khadi, of what use is he, since there is already the Chief Justice?’ he concluded.

‘Well,’ I answered, ‘Islam is not like Christianity or the other religions you know. In Islam, there are very specific laws in respect of all social matters which must be observed correctly. They include those concerning marriage, divorce, rights to offspring and inheritance. In this regard, only an Islamic court, with a judge versed in the science of the Quran and the Prophet’s traditions, could proper administer justice on a disputing Muslim couple or their inheritors. As for my position, it is only a natural complement to the Area Courts. The appeals that come to me cannot be handled by the Chief Justice because he has no knowledge of Islamic Law.’

Gowon tried all he could to avoid the civil war. He knew it would be catastrophic. Ojuckwu was just adamant, selfishly eager and power wanting.
you can insult Gowon, but Yakubu Jack Gowon meant no evil to Nigerians. Its evident of this that he is still alive today.
some of you not pitying northern Christians, please don't. God is keeping us save. and we are the ones holding this country. if the bridge(North-central) is destroyed..... I fear what will happen to the other nigerian christian who envisioned themselves in a safe zone.
the best we can do to each other is accept the fact that we cant change the fact that we are Nigerians and we just have to love and adore one another the way and how they are.

Look, I understand where you're coming from but, trust me... Nzeogwu was a good guy. I did a thorough research on this guy, read lots of books and fortunately had the privilege of speaking to an actual Biafra war vet. He might be a bit hot-headed and arrogant but never, proud.

OBJ was his best friend, never drank nvr womanized, a strict disciplinarian and even late Tai Solarin adored his courage and even named the most popular road in his school after him. I know this as an Ex student. Nzeogwu's plan was to install Awolowo as the President. He never wanted Nigeria to break.

You'll be soooo surprised to know that Ojukwu systematically killed Nzeogwu but, of course pinned it against the Nigerian forces. Ojukwu became scared, wary and jealous of Nzeogwu's adulations among Nigerians. He engineered his release from prison but literally banned him from all military activities. So how could he have found for Biafra?

Anyway, the Igbos are their own downfall. Nzeogwu should nvr have relinquished power to that fool, Ironsi. He should have held on to it and follow through on his plans. It would have been very tough but, trust me. He had lots of initial support before the news of Zik's escape filtered through.

Nzeogwu stood no chance against the foolish Ironsi immediately they couldn't nail him on the night of the coup. It was Ifeajuna that betrayed the other four majors who had altruistic intentions. The truth of the whole story was the bulk of the job laid with Gowon but he blew it by refusing to follow through on the agreement in Aburi. Ojukwu tried to protect the Easterners who were at that time facing a systemic genocide. Remember that he never supported the coup and that made him doubt Nzeogwu. He didn't bargain for division either as all his points at Aburi didn't suggest any thing of such.
The Best bet for Nigeria now is to go back to Aburi and do minor adjustments to reflect new present developments. Without this, war is inevitable and the outcome will be worst than ever.

Zik was actually away from Nigeria weeks before the coup. He was on an 'endless' medical cruise trip in the Caribbeans. The reason for his dramatic absence during the coup, was to justify reason why Balewa, the Prime Minister, was killed and Azikiwe, the President, was not.

Only God knows who feed you guys with so much lies and you believe them without doing any research.

Bakassi was part of colonial German Cameroon, after WW1 and Germany lost the war, her colonies in Africa were divided. Cameroon was divided between the British in Nigeria and the French. Bakassi was part of British Cameroon and close to the Nigerian border. Soon Nigerians started to settle around the area, at first there was no problem with Nigeria because British Cameroon was still administered from Nigeria.

After the independence of both territories and the British southern Cameroon decided to be part of Cameroon, that was when the republic of Cameroon decided to take back its territory from Nigeria which they won in court and OBJ gave it back to Cameroon. From your post, you said Gowon gave Bakassi to Cameroon so which Bakassi did OBJ give to them again? I believe you'll just lying that you're from there because if you are, your elders would've told you the history of the area.

Where and how did Gowon get into this? You obviously don't know, you won't ask and neither would you do any research about events aside believing every lie you are told, when Buhari calls Nigerian yoots lazy now, it is people like you that'll start calling him names.
Your lies is simply outrageous, Gowon gave Bakassi to Cameroon in a secret agreement, Cameroon presented that secret document to international court that's how they were able drive Nigerians away without paying compensation. Gowon also made sure that the igbos in Port Harcourt never got their properties after 1970, because of also the secret promise he made to the ikwere and ijaw people that if they support Nigeria and abandon Biafra that he will give them all the Igbo properties. It's people like you that feed propaganda and falsehood about the evils of the civil war instead of saying the truth. Yeah why don't you ask Gowon himself for that secret document.....You are either very naive or you pretend to be. Go and ask anyone in Port Harcourt who lived there in the 70s, it's a well known fact that igbos never got back their properties when they tried to return to Port Harcourt in 1970 unlike in other towns in Nigeria. Even Onyeka Owenu mentioned that in a speech last week, her father's house was taken also. In fact the first igbos igbos that returned to Port Harcourt on January and February 1970 after the Civil War ended was either beaten up or killed. The "victor no vanquished" was a joke. Let me also mention that all the igbos was just given a maximum of 20 pounds in 1970 no matter the amount of money that they previously had in their account. You have decided to be bias and support that evil and pretentious man like Gowon for whatever reason.

Everyone knows about the abandoned property saga in PH and environs, you accused Gowon of a secret agreement with the locals, get us a link to that, na so so epistle you dey write.

Maybe you think because nairaland is an anonymous blog anyone can say anything without being questioned for links. Imagine me asserting that you're a white man when you are actually as black as I am, am I not supposed to produce evidence like video, pictures etc to prove it?

Another fallacy, 20 pounds wasn't given to all Igbos, it was only given to Igbos who still had documents showing they had an account, you may have only 2 pounds or 2,000 pounds, all boiled down to 20 pounds. Inhuman as that decision was, it is good we state things the way it happened.
