A 20-year-old lady, *Miracle Kalu* who was arrested for selling her one-month-old baby for N130,000,

couple: *Patrick Mbama*, 41,and *Ogechi Chinonso Ekwebele*, 30, were arrested alongside five other passengers.

As 16-year-old Miriam* stepped out of her tent to fetch water near the Madinatu Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Nigeria's northeastern Borno state in January last year, a middle-aged woman she knew as "Aunty Kiki" approached her.

All they could make out for sure, however, was that the two women communicated with each other and the men in Igbo, the language spoken in southeastern Nigeria

I think if the mother of the child is saying the truth and if she is not into baby factory there's nothing wrong in giving the child out instead of those ones that kills or drop the baby at the dustbin to die

There is a problem when money exchanges hands in a place like Nigeria. Is it ok if the mother sells the child and it ends up being used as a sacrifice for some insane ritual?
What is to stop other women who are "not into baby factory" from deciding to have babies with the plan to eventually sell them for their own livelihood? Do these women need to be officially registered with a known "baby factory" before we understand that the lives being sold MATTER and require our protection, both from their mothers and those who purchase them?

This country with abnormalities.
Those parents that give birth to almajiris that constitute nuisance are not charged to court and prosecuted. It is her child and she can do what she pleases, just that this kind of process provides loophole for fraudulent people to key into.

Irrespective of whatever her intentions were, the fact that she sold her own baby should be enough to prosecute her. Sell a human being?

that is subject to interpretation.....if someone gives her child to a couple and the couple goes "take this money for transport and to take care of yourself" would that be termed selling the baby?
130K for transport?! cheesy
Stop defending crime because they are your tribesmen, that’s why naija is in deep shit angry

lol....I am not defending crime and I am stating the obvious...... besides 130k is not too much to give anyone.

If I were in the shoes of the couple and had to take care of the girls child because she couldn't do so herself, I will certainly give her more than that 130k

go back and read again, she said she sold the baby, she didn't say she give the baby. She even said # 130,000 was the amount she sold. No wonder that region is full of criminals, you always try to defend them.
I am not defending anything......I was making a statement based on the fact that money changed hands.....simply saying it could be payment for goods or a gift

Don't rewrite the narration.. She didn't give, she sold the child. Stop promoting impunity
I am sure you saw where I wrote "the process was wrong".......

The way I see it yes she sold her baby probably on the advise of the guy that told her to keep it.

But this is just one case out of several cases that won't follow this same script, but will still see a baby exchange hands.

It won't change what these young ladies have to go through. Do we keep blaming the young ladies for giving away their kids? Or how many of us here will be willing to take in the child of another.

There are processes to this (adoption) how many people actually know what that process is?

My point is there is a bigger picture and we should all try and view it from the side of the young woman

Golan007:

If they had given her 500 Naira for transportation works she have been happy the baby found the couple as her parents?
And if they had given her 130k would that have been bad as well?

The young lady was naive and probably saw it as a business opportunity to make some money out of the situation. But it doesn't change the fact that she cannot take care of the baby.

There is also the part of the couple being sincere in their plans for the child. That is another story

I don't encourage child trafficking. But I don't blame the woman. she did the right thing by selling her child. at least she didn't commit D n C or throwing him into the toilet. Or she nor use am do money ritual.

She said could not feed her own mouth talkless of feeding the baby. But she still went ahead to make the baby where CD of N100 could have saved the day. Sister, call a spade a spade , there is no single justification for her actions. She's purely a greedy fellow influenced by making quick money from the sale of the baby.
If she has not been caught, definitely she will make another baby ,so she can continue to make quick cash. Simple
at the bolded, that assumption of yours was far fetched and simply stupid.

Frankly, I think the girl did the right thing, in the circumstances.
She made the mistake of getting pregnant. The deed was already done. She has 2 choices, either to abort it or to keep it. If she keeps it, she can't cater for it. So she made the only fair choice, give it out to someone to cater for it. It is illegal to collect money for doing so. But let's be pragmatic here. That is the best decision in her circumstances

Non of the options are palatable.
Why not pick a better and more reaponsible option?
y you are right non of the options are right but the child deservrs a better life which the real mother cannot offer, she could've aborted it if she has money seems the guy denied her, well my opinion

See justification. You mean you can sell your own baby ( 9 months pregnancy stress ) for N130,000?

is it better to let the baby die of hunger and sickness? Let's be realistic at times. Stop all this hypocrisy
Re: Why I Sold My Baby For N130,000 — Orphan by olusola200: 7:43am On May 13, 2020
To I see nothing wrong it's case of offer and acceptance,
Both are happy with their transaction,

Do you want her to kill the baby
Do you want her to steal the baby

You can only advice not to enforce, they're adult

If she had given her baby to those couples to care for free of charge. There wouldn't have been case at all
