Hello Nairalanders! Please I'm in serious need of your candid advice. Let me go straight to the point.

I've been going through a delimma for some days now. I'm presently working with a microfinance bank and i earn about 40k after tax. Recently, I was offered a job in government house with a salary slightly above my present salary.

In my present place of work, there is job security and I learn a lot on the job although the salary ain't much. In the new job, there is free accommodation but no job security because I'm being employed by the SA (special assistant) to the governor and i won't be getting any official appointment letter.

The problem now is, I'm stuck between the two. I don't know if I'm to go with the new offer or continue with my present job. I don't want to take a decision that I might regret tomorrow. My fear is that I might be sacked at any time because I'm not employed directly by the government but the SA.

I've been thinking about it and i still don't know the best decision to take. So, I decided to seek advice from nairaland cause I know I can get good advice here.

Please I will appreciate your sincere advice and contributions.

Political jobs normally end after 4 years , sometime even less than that except the SA to the governor has weight . Even as at that, the SA may also like to give that same job offer to another person(no be only you go chop nao). Don't depend on political job, your boss/you can be fired at any time. Stick with your bank job except you've saved enough from the banking job

Op from my point of view don't take the new job. What happens if the SA is sacked or change in government anytime soon..... It's government and anything can happen. Job security matters

My opinion is that you should remain with the micro finance bank.

Reasons:
1. Stability- firm offer letter, firm work structure,
2. Career progression in Finance

With the Government work your job security and accommodation is dependent on the SA’s job, budget and mood especially as you don’t have an offer letter directly with the government. Politics is fickle in Nigeria.

You may think that you could make good Government contacts. That’s a gamble.

With your experience with the microfinance bank, you can get another one anytime. Take the new offer but with the plan to start another business that can fetch you extra income, or you save all extra on the new income for emergency shock absorber

I hope you know you will part of those who will try to rig the next election. I hope you won't say no when the time comes and you are given an assignment.

Go for the SA appointment. With your close proximity to the corridors of power you can secure a better paying job. Don't forget that the government houses are where job slots are shared, even state quotas for FG jobs.

@op

SA with a governor and you are asking questions?

Even if it is 1 year as SA, you would have lots of connections with multiple sources of income.

Go for the SA job

I will say this is truly a dicy decision and you should be very carefully while making your choice. If you take the govt job, it will expose you in terms of wider experience and connection. The govt job will open your eyes to certain things like business opportunities and any other hustle which you can survive with even when the govt job is no longer there.
For the microfinance job, bro you can stay there for 20 years without increment in that your salary. Forget the job security cos ones you start small with such orginazation you will keep crawling in your career growth and at the end of the day you might even resign on your own after wasting so many years.
My take, go for the govt job.
One kuli kuli for u there,,, na u don tell OP wetin he go do and u also spoke ma mind.
me work for bank soteeeeee! before i come get opportunity run enter government.
so OP run for ur life, dont see that micro finance bank as the ultimate. no bank is worth been with for long.
U can always come back to the banking sector...bank work na like water

Op,
Go for the government house job, even if there
might be no security but your exposure is
guaranteed, from that exposure you might get

I won't advise you to take the government work as it comes with too much uncertainty.

Remember you were employed by an individual and not the government and so it's obvious where your loyalty lies as you will be on your toes trying to please him.

You could be discarded by him even before you have time to park in and by then you have resigned.

Some of the people telling you to take the risk don't have any job at the moment so be very careful.

Even if you want to take a risk, it's not a job like what you just described.

Not giving you a letter means you can be denied.

You are OYO. Stay put and wait for better offers.

Politicians can owe their staff for the whole of Africa and Europe combined. Don't say I didn't warn you. What ever decision you take just have that in mind. Also know you can't stay on that 40k job forever. Cheers

A secured job is more preferable. A job without an appointment letter is not guarantee!
Re: Should I Stay With My Job Or Go With This New Job? by Nwakannaya1: 7:42pm On Jun 15, 2020
Well, let me go straight to the point.

The governor is not the one employing you but one of his SAs, so the job security in that appointment is dependent on the goodwill between the SA and the governor. You cannot only be fired by the SA but once the SA is fired, you are also fired. Never bank on goodwill deeply.

From experience I can tell you this, if you are not adept with shady deals, asslicking and shutting your mouth at the expense of conscience, remain put where you are.

However, if you think you can handle the intrigues of following a politician like touts do, and accept the insults therein, then you are good to go.

If you were in a government office before, I would have asked you to take leave of absence and come back to your job later but then it is not the case here.

Most Nigerian politicians are not people to be with when you have an alternative.

Yes, you can get opportunities while with them but this is entirely dependent on goodwill, not competence.

You know what is best for u!

In life never ever work for sole proprietorship, I repeat it never ever. The risk involved is uncontrollable. Always stay with a security job.

Take the new job. Trust me the salary may be small but a lot of benefits follow the job as SA. And if you push well you surely will get a better job. Also use the SA job to get another source of income as back should in case u dont get a job after the tenure....

Which ever you choose wont be a bad decision.
Like someone has said, follow your mind, calm down, analyze every thing.
The only regret will be you not working hard and smart enough to improve the skills you presently have.

NB:
If there's no sight of promotion or salary increase in your present job. Weigh the offer very well

What's job security with progression
