BY CONCERNED STAFF AND STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALBAR, CALABAR, CROSS RIVER STATE.

According to Wikipedia, “Fake news (also known as junk news, pseudo-news, or hoax news) is a type of yellow journalism or propaganda that consists of deliberate disinformation or hoaxes spread via traditional news media (print and broadcast) or online social media.” On the internet, fake news spreads like wildfire and to be most effective, fake news needs to be spread through social media to reach receptive audiences.

Our take on this is please don’t believe everything you read on the internet just because it is on the internet and seems believable or there’s a picture to it, sometimes ask yourself logical question why this news?

This post is to bring your attention to false and fake news in circulation released by private bloggers on several occasions dated; 14th day of August, 2019 and the 13th day of October, 2019 stating that “PROF. WORUGJI AND PROF. UHUKA DEMOTED OR REDEPLOYED TO THE INSTITUTE OF AFRICAN AND ASIAN STUDIES, UNICAL” on https://unicalstory..com/2019/08/

My question is do you believe this?

If you do why believe same?

Sometime last year a decent and upright man (Prof. Emeka Uhuka) was accused by some of his colleagues in the Faculty of Law, University of Calabar over his qualification as a Professor of law and a petition was written against him. He was thereafter invited by the Academic Fraud Investigation Committee of the University of Calabar to defend himself which he did and was duly discharged but the story was leaked by the present dean of Faculty of law (Prof. Michael P. Okom) who saw Prof. Uhuka as a threat to him actualizing his ambition of becoming a Dean in the Faculty of Law. The Academic Fraud Investigation Committee of the University of Calabar later discovered that Prof. Michael P. Okom leaked this information online in a bid to tarnish the image of Prof. Emeka Uhuka and obstruct the ongoing investigation by the committee which should have been confidential. As a result a query was issued against Prof. Okom to cause a retraction and public apology. Copies of the letter from the Academic Fraud Investigation Committee of the University of Calabar and Prof. Okom retraction can be seen below:

Prof. Emeka Uhuka is a professor of Law specialized in Jurisprudence, International Law, Criminology, International Criminal Law; International Tax & Financial Services; Anti-Money Laundering & Combating of Terrorist Financing; Anti- Corruption; Offshore Financial Services and Forensic Law. This can be verified by the official university of calabar website: https://www.unical.edu.ng/staff/user/profile-emekauhuka

Prof. Uhuka was employed by the University of Calabar as a PROFESSOR OF LAW to boost their chances of securing full accreditation, as well to teach the Post Graduate and Undergraduate students in the Faculty of Law University of Calabar because of the faculty fell short of Professors at the time of his appointment. The University of Calabar had interviewed and evaluated the credentials and qualifications of Prof. Uhuka before the he was employed as a Professor of Law in 2017. As at 2017 there was only one Professor of law in the person of Prof. Isreal N. E. Worugji. It is already publicly known that Prof. Cyril Ndifon was under suspension over allegation of rape, so Professor Uhuka became the second Professor in the faculty of law.

Prof. Uhuka played a vital and reviving role in the area of teaching and learning, and also in the area of the Faculty of Law gaining its full accreditation status. Professor Emeka Uhuka is one of the academic staffs in the University of Calabar that was cleared by the University of Calabar Quality Assurance Unit for not involving in any form of results and examination answer booklet misconduct in 2018. Based on this, He (Professor Uhuka) was appointed as the Chairman Faculty of Law Disciplinary Committee/ Faculty of Law Quality Assurance Committee respectively. Professor Uhuka is one man we saw to had believed in quality and equality, he maintained a social balance between students and staff through his open door policy in all aspect. He is a very sincere, decent and respected man, a man who had students’ progress in his heart. His charisma indeed made students and academic staffs see and take him as their role model and mentor whom they confide on to express their challenges faced in the academic learning world.

In 2019, Prof Uhuka’s passion for fight against corruption and research earned him membership of the Association of Certified Crime Specialists, Senior Research Fellow, International Association of Research Scholars, ‘Chartered Economist’ and Fellow Global Academy of Finance and Management, USA.

Staff and students of the faculty of law, University of Calabar can testify that Prof Uhuka remains the ‘best brain’ to teach Jurisprudence at undergraduate and post graduate levels. No wonder some of the students transferred to other schools to further their studies and some academic staff are hesitant to advance their post graduate studies because of the absence of Prof Uhuka.

It is certainly a surprise to us that some detractors in the same Faculty he had put in so much to gain full accreditation decided to fight him because of fear, yes fear. Prof. Uhuka was projected to become the next substantive Dean of Law by the university management. It was very obvious that he being a non-Indigene of Cross River state and was to pilot the affairs of the Faculty of Law University of Calabar triggered the tribal fight against Professor Uhuka, causing them to exhibit nepotism, myopic, unlearned and primordial dirty attitude toward this innocent man. This is unfair and unacceptable by this noble group whose function is to investigate and establish nothing but the truth to the world.

Hell was let loose when Prof Uhuka rejected several attempts for him to join the cultic world. In one of the faculty board meetings, Prof Uhuka emphasized the need for research in the faculty and extended true hands of assistance for overseas sabbatical and research studies. The attitude and reaction of some of the senior academic staff portrayed them to be “local champions” who didn’t need external studies or competition for promotion and recognition. In view of that, the “ghost” petition writers led by some of the faculty professors summoned several meetings in one of the professor’s office and outside the school to plot ways of humiliating Prof Uhuka. What they didn’t realize was that some of the meetings were audio and video taped for evidence purposes. Some of the current and former law students who attended the meetings and are now called to bar can stand their ground to testify if need be.

Therefore, we the concerned staff and students of the University of Calabar wish to discredit the petition against Professor Emeka Uhuka by the cowardice and lazy detractors in the Faculty of Law, University of Calabar. We hereby urge members of the public to disregard such character assassination in the name of petition and any other form of write up against this man on any private blog.

Let us be guided that the information originated from a private online blogger and not from university of Calabar official website. These fake news are fabricated stories from mischievous persons who are lecturers/Prof. of the faculty of law university of Calabar with the aim to tarnish the image of Prof. Worugji and Prof. Uhuka.

The next question will be why posting something false about your own colleague?

Three answers comes to my mind namely, jealousy, hatred or envy.

We also wish to inform the general public that the news is entirely false and the University Management had never demoted or redeployed any lecturer from the faculty of law Unical including Prof. Worugji or Prof. Uhuka.

The official website of the University of Calabar remains: www.unical.edu.ng and any information circulated about this institution by private bloggers are false and should be regarded as fake news.
