The event which has as its theme “My Voice Our Equal Future” saw attendees advocate the need for the Bayelsa State House of Assembly to speedily domesticate the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Acts to stem the tide of children defilement.

Declaring the event open in Yenagoa, Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs, Mrs. Faith Opene, represented by Mr. Panebi, said the ministry is making a determined effort in addressing the issues of rape and other related violence against the Girl-child with advocacy visit to schools, training as well as giving them starter-packs.

The Commissioner, who also noted that the ministry has established family courts to address divorce and defilement cases, thanked NAWOJ for organising the programme.

In an address, State Chairperson of NAWOJ, Mrs. Maria Olodi-Osumah said the essence of the programme was to educate the Girl-Child on their inherent rights, give them a sense of belonging as well as create awareness on the significance of the day.

Mrs. Olodi-Osumah, who decried the increasing rate of violence meted on the girl child, called for the review of legal frame work considered anti-girl child in order to protect their rights.
