Guilt is your body "guidance system" warning and notifying you that, that which you have done has been recorded against you and has not yet been wiped out or blotted out!

For he whose sin is wiped away, (blotted from the records) no longer suffers from guilt!

The word "repent from sin" assumes a previous understanding of what Sin is, which is not the case with everyone. That is why instead of that message, Jesus in John 8 explains that in order to cease being a slave to sin, one instead has to accept and obey His teachings(Truth) and si be set free from sin by the Truth.
