What Caused Buhari's Loss? by kuka700: 7:18pm On Apr 18, 2011
The failure of Buhari to some of us northerners was a suprise. To us Buhari seemed to be a credible and capable candidate who could deliver Nigeria; whom most Nigerians liked. It appeared we were wrong, we had a myopic view. What could have been the primary reason for his failure? Is it because of the dangerous statements he made and fear of his alleged plan to islamize NG, is it because the southerners wanted one of theirs to be president this time or is it because you think he is an incapable and poor leader?

1. Arrogance: As played out since the beginning to the end of the alliance talks with ACN. You don't come to a negotiation table with a "win all" attitude.

2. Sturbonness: Buhari did not listen to the advice of many politicians who advised him against picking a Tunde Bakare who has no electoral value but just the ability to make noise. He didn't even pick someone from the South East/South South and his campaign train only stopped in a few places there. Politics is all about "what is in there for me". Buhari/Bakare holds nothing for the South South and the South East people. Remember that he jailed their son - Alex Ekwueme (their brightest hope of clinching the Presidency of Nigeria till date) in 1984 while Shagari was cooling off under house arrest in his house in Ikoyi mansion.

3. Indelible Past Sins/Nemesis: Everyone has sinned no doubt. But when we sin, we should be honest enough to admit so and ask for forgiveness. Even God makes that a requirement by asking us to confess our sins before He grants forgiveness. I cannot remember Buhari asking to be forgiven for ordering the killing of Barth Owoh and 2 others or for the unjust incarceration of some notable politicians of the second republic most of whom died from many health complications developed in the period they spent in gaol. Pa Ajasin went blind after he was released from prison while Ambrose Alli and Bisi Onabanjo died. When Buhari had the opportunity to be forgiven at the Oputa Panel, he failed to show up and later went to court to stop the panel from publishing its report.

4. Perceived Ethnocentricism: Buhari has demonstrated in the past, especially as Chairman of PTF, that he has little regard for other parts of the country. Though he comes honest, SE/SS/SW people would still not trust him with their destiny.

5. Religious Bigotry: This is a popular weakness I need not over-emphasized.

Almost everyone who voted against Buhari held on to one or more of the above reasons.

Did Buhari really contest? grin

--GEJ is an incumbent so people are more familiar with him. besides, he hasn't been terrible so people are willing to give him a chance over someone like Buhari who's actions might be a bit more radical.
--GEJ has more financial resources to sponsor his campaign (it has been pointed out that there was over 70% voter turn out in the precints where he won. but less than 40% in areas where Buhari was supported).
Re: What Caused Buhari's Loss? by Fhemmmy: 7:44pm On Apr 18, 2011
I think the biggest reason is uneducated supporters of his.
Re: What Caused Buhari's Loss? by Nobody: 8:08pm On Apr 18, 2011
1. There is no single structure of CPC in the South South and in the South East. What Magic was he expecting?

2. The Igbos voted for GEJ becuase he started doing things they never expected: He appointed an Igbo Chie of Army staff, contrary to the agreement between the Northern and the Western poilitical/military "elites".

3. He is about to open Onitsha Sea Port, almost an "impossble" thing to do. Igbos voted bfor him wherever they are. lagos, Kano or even Zamfara.

4. The South South and the South East are forming an alliance so that they both can succeed the turbulence of Nigerian politics.

5. Northern minorities voted for Jonathan in protest to the inhumanity of the Hausa Fulani. (The Beron man is more at home with an Igbo man than with an Hausa/Fulani).

6. Many village voters in the South South and South East did not know anything about Buhari let alone the CPC.

7. Those of us who know campaigned against him, becuase he belongs to the "elites" of the Nigerian Army who held this nation to ransome since independence.

Imagine democracy in Nigeria since independence?

Many believe there was rigging in the South South and South East., but believe me, Honestly, I am suprised that Buhari even got some votes. This is the truth.

Many more reasons.
Re: What Caused Buhari's Loss? by DrummaBoy(m): 8:23pm On Apr 18, 2011
1. Buhari lost because most Nigerians electorates are blinded by religious and tribal prejudices.
2. Buhari lost because he is not the incubent and had no stolen resources to propagate his campaign.
3. Buhari lost because the PDP deployed its usual rigging machinery.
4. Buhari lost because Gbagi foundation and co, sponsored by Aso Rock, spent millions in Nigerian newspapers to malign his person.
5. Buhari lost because ThisDay newspapers and co succeeded in telling Nigerians that he is a religious bigot.
6. Buhari lost because Nigerians could not see the gracefulness in this gallant former soldier but would rather resort to cluessness leadership: GEJ.
7. Buhari lost because he did not have money to bribe voters to vote for him.
8. Buhari lost to two sets of Nigerians: those benefitting illegally from GEJ's govt and those too ignorant to give him a chance.
9. Buhari lost because most Nigerians believe in fairy tale goodluck and fate, than hardwork, vision and purposefulness.
10. Buhari lost because God has reserved a better day, and a better time to deliver Nigeria from the oppressive rule of the PDP; this is the beginning of the loosing program of the so called 'winning' majority.

Buhari has come to show us it can be done, soon it would be done.

Buhari loss because he got less votes just as Ribadu did.
Re: What Caused Buhari's Loss? by Odunnu: 8:49pm On Apr 18, 2011
Cant really say why he lost but I can say why I didnt, couldnt, wouldnt vote him!
He was a tribalist, an arrogant extremist. A fundamental islamic fanatic that had this very annoying mindset that he was born to rule.
Even when I tried to be open minded and criticise objectively, I couldnt come to terms with that loud-mouthed two-faced lying -tongued pastor running mate of his! Kai! I just couldnt accept these.
BTW, has Bakare prophecied again? I need to know whats in stock for us as a nation.

What a silly clown. Who has been rambling? It is your oga that needs his blood pressure checked, with the type of government he will be running. You can only steal so much in peace.

Some people accuse Southerners of tribal seniments as to why Buhari lost.

They forget that given Buhari's antecedents he should not be partaking in a democratic process and in fact if not for the same tribal and religious sentiments may be no one should even vote for him in the North in the first place.

Take your own advice, Igwe of rotten green fonts. No wonder the level of your posts are as limited as your fonts and opinion. Typical of PDP goons, you will like to control what people say, who they vote for and rig their votes. Focus on defending your oga's numbers. Green Leprechaun Igwe.

Re: What Caused Buhari's Loss? by CrudeOil2(m): 9:50pm On Apr 18, 2011
He is inflexible and rigid.
His dictatorial mindset is his major undoing.
Everything revolves around and ends with him.
He is not diplomatic.
He is not smart
This is his third consecutive presidential election bid loss, which implies that he is a daft punk.
Wants to win a presidential election on the platform of a very new party with no national spread.
He had four years (after 2007) to plan for his presidential bid but due to his lack of hindsight he goofed as usual
Failed to inculcate the SS/SE in his campaign and political plans. He thought he would win only with the votes of the SW and the North which was a bigoted decision. stupiid.
Generally, he is not a good politician. He is an egocentric, conceited and foolish military man. If he wants to change Nigeria there are other ways of achieving his aim(positive ways), but due to his lust for and greed for power, he has decided to embarrass himself publicly every four years. He should retire from active politics. His kind is not needed in the Nigerian political terrain.

I'm not convinced Buhari lost.So the title of the thread is misleading. The election was clearly rigged and I doubt if USA will allow it stand.

Are you threatening me on NL? Really? Wow the leprechaun is showing muscles. grin. Does my truth make you uncomfortable? Sure you gain a lot from corruption. NB: Your opinion or advice is for yourself. So keep it there and use it. Whatever makes sense to you.

Buhari had no single srtucture of his CPC in south south and south east. I doubt if he got in the South West. Why is he reejcting only Sout South and South East? What of South West? Did he win there? You guys are just ranting based on logics contaminated by misguided emotions. Buhari has no structure to win elections in Nigeria.

For you info, ISouth East and South South voted for Jonathan in block. Accept it so that you don't get heart attack. Cheers
