So, when are you guys doing an analysis of the amount paid to Agberos in Enugu, Abia, Rivers, Anambra, Kano, Abuja etc? Abi NURTW only exist in Lagos?

Analysis like this would make a lot of sense if it was done all over the country or at least in some selected states so that we can do a comparative analysis. So, why single out Lagos state?

Btw, NURTW is a trade Union. Trade Unions and professional bodies charge their members huge sums annually. As a member of ICAN, I pay 30k to the institute as annual subscription. I still pay for conference, AGM and faculty due without complaining. So, are members of NURTW complaining? Who forced them to be members of the union?
YOU ARE ON POINT

Why this fixation with Lagos branch of NURTW, when it's not as if it is the only state where they operate?
That is where the madness began

These states u mentioned don't pay to agberos, they is well structured mechanisms put in place..like in akwaibom, there is road tax, tricycle buy 150naira tickets Daily except on Saturdays and sundays and on public holidays.
Though there r some loading bays that agberos control.. Once u park there and load, u must pay 20naira if u carry 3passengers if its keke, and 50naira if its keke bus.
Police do have share in all these loadimg bays...

Tricycle 50k in the whole of lagos?
The amount in my neighborhood is almost up to that, it should be up to 300k numbers in lagos

They can't get accurate figures.
The estimates are still fair and safe so they don't exaggerate the figures

Lagos own is prominent, hence it's worthy to be mentioned first.

This is exactly what I have been telling a lot of younger people but they don’t listen.

I hate it each time people post things like “I am so so so ,looking for a job, graduated with so so so from so so so university” How can any right thinking human with a first hand knowledge that your country is the CAPITAL OF POVERTY still sit down trusting in a system with very limited white collar jobs to provide such? How can an intellectual sit down to watch Agberos preside over a N120B market with no attempt whatsoever to collabo or wrestle at least N25million with
them??

We have a solution that we just kick started with these guys and I can tell you all first hand that these guys are just humans like us trying hard to feed their families and live their dream life.So far as whatever you want to do with them will not touch union money and drop something for them they listen.

Many times these guys do a lot of rubbish and cause a lot of problems..this we know and cannot be encouraged but the truth is that these guys are backed by the government, they are not doing anything illegal and behind the knowledge /approval of the government.

Lastly,if you don’t have a job,put your certificate back in your box, roll your sleeves and find a way to wrestle these N120B with these guys.It is too much money to overlook and some of the companies you are seeking employment from don’t even turn over a 100million annually.Funky-fy agbero work, clean it up,bring technology to it,look for what their biggest challenge is and solve it,improve their collection process, aid their cash handling process, help them take money to the bank easier and faster, improve communication between agbero and driver….

Whatever you can provide just find a way to convince or confuse all parties involved and get a piece of this $$$$$!!!!!

What are you saying? Honestly you are just off point. Infact comparing a professional body like ICAN to NURTW cast doubt on your membership.

Now back to the issue, this money is the excess you and I pay on tfare, I mean the rip off that they charge. Members of NURTW don't pay, it is the money they generate from the parks daily and those monies are ripped from our pockets..

Hope you understood now.

Brother, why are you talking like this na. Who told you transporters are not complaining? Do you take buses (danfos) like this? Why do drivers run away from paying and love carrying “staff”?

To my point: it is false approximation to liken agbero to ICAN. ICAN is backed by law while NURTW is not. Two, ICAN is not a trade union but a professional institute unlike NURTW. In fact, I don’t even know why I’m arguing this. This is not even debatable

NURTW is a registered trade union and an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress. It is a professional association of road transport workers just like NBA, NSE etc. It is registered and backed by law.

ICAN is a professional body quite alright but at the same time, it’s a trade association. It serves a dual role of certifying professional Accountants and an association of professional Accountants.

The people you call agberos are mere employees of the union who were employed to help collect dues the same way other professional associations and unions employ people to help carry out administrative duties including collecting of membership dues.

Now that I think it, agberos are part of the social ecosystem of Lagos. It contributes in some sense to it's meaningfully stability or balance.. They are the alternative to actually criminality. Absence of which will see and unprecidentent surge in crime.

#social functionality.

The writer of this article is trying to help ignorant peeps like u to know why the agberos control lagos state, and why there is always Blood shed from their activities.
The state govt should remove this power revenue collection via land transport in lagos from nurtw.
This is more than 100billion naira not in the govt treasury but in the hands of local powerplayers.
We also see why it will be hard for a lev playing ground for opposition during elections cos 99% of those constituting these agberos are loyal to the apc
