When Nigeria was not as rotten and as depressing as it has become today. One could still boast of close to 20hrs electricity supply, fuel price then was negligible and the exchange rate was not changing as the second is ticking by. I may say I miss Nigeria of those days. At least you could still find normal people everywhere. Only God knows what happened to make it the shithole it has become today. The series was the star of those days and we would always look up to seeing another episode the next Sunday.

From the story line this was when nollywood was still dishi g out good content. Not this one's we have now. When you can single handle predict the end just by watch 3 scenes.

Those days, if you miss an episode or a scene you would be lost for a long time.

This was why they brought about the 'Previously On.......

Who knows where Tunde Euba is? And what he is doing now. You can only appreciate that guy if you watched him on stage in the play SWIZI BANZI IS DEAD back then at the NATIONAL THEATRE. I have searched and searched on Google about him. That guy is too talented not to have footprints

Checkmate was really massive. All the Nollywood big wigs were in it: Bobmanuel, KOK, RMD, Kunle Bamtefa, Francis Agu, Ego Boyo, Amaka Igwe (Director), Andy, etc.
My best characters should be:
Nduka. His life mirrors what couples go through when they can't have a child after a few years of marriage. His mother even had to bring a village girl for him from the village.
Susan Hastrop (Ego Boyo) was so beautiful. I don't even listen to what she says; i just sit there admiring her beauty.
Akpan and his campus life was also an interesting part for me then. I'd always imagined what life in the university was like.
Chief (Fuji House) was the undiluted comedy section of the show.

CHECKMATE WAS THE BEST!
No rivalry up till now....

No.2 is Rattlesnake..

Omg.... I remember Nkemji the Village girl that said 'Lagos is full of fry over ' instead of fly over. Checkmate was one soap opera that was just captivating then. We had very few of them by that time though however, they were very meaningful and had something to teach

Not forgetting FORTUNES, another soap that had us glued to our seats every Sunday evening. That was the unfolding moment of Ramsey Noah, Regina Askia,Liz Benson, Pat Attah etc. Really good old days.

Sometimes I wish we could turn back the hands of time. Solid content was aired on television then

Also BEHIND THE CLOUDS.

Now NTA is now so useless even Gotv has it as its only free channel. To make matters worse, We still won't watch it for free.
Right? They won't dare leaving the old NTA as a free channel in this day and time. They would lose, nobody go subscribe.
Come to think of it, cable TVs in Nigeria then were free. Nigerians had a choice.

The 1980's were very hard for a lot of Nigerians.

By 1990, when the show first aired, we had some economic uplift due to rising oil prices...but then by mid 1991...the prices collapsed and we were back to square one.

The economy has always been hard for most Nigerians because of the fact that we rely on revenue from things whose prices we don't control. Whether Buhari or anyone else.

Now NTA is now so useless even Gotv has it as its only free channel. To make matters worse, We still won't watch it for free.

Let me start my repsonse by saying that ;person wey never eat outside him papa house, think him papa food na best food;

NTA compared to other TV stations has always been useless. But back in 1990, we had no choice. There was cable, but it was very expensive then, and you needed a very large dish to get signal sometimes .

Even back then, NTA used to show a lot of foreign programming...though it got limited as time went by, due to money issues, and government mandating more local content. Watching the foreign programming and comparing it to local programming back then showed you how useless NTA was.(Sesame street was a lot better than Puppet world(from NTA Jos) , for example...and Puppet world wasn't exactly awful) But as i said, we had no choice. Everyone watched NTA and /or the state broadcasting service(not usually avaialble in all parts of the state anyways)

In 1990, cable satellite became available in Nigeria. By 2000, most of the NTA's potential tv viewing audience had access to cable and better programming.. The dish grew smaller too.

Part of the problem was that until 1991, NTA had no private competitiors..so they could take refuge in complacency. After all, NTA was all we had.. Even when the private competitiors came, they took time to get to NTA's reach (it took AIT a very long time.) Meanwhile, government TV stations in say the UK had private competitiors (itv, channel 4, etc) for a very very long time...meaning they had to up their game.
