The bolded confirms the romance of the pilots with the bandits. If not, why would a pilot who claimed to have gone to engage/neutralize the bandits complain of being shot at? The complain proves that the pilots mission wasn't to shoot/bomb the bandits. It's very obvious now.
Ok let us assume the pilots was on a recon mission. Since the shooting has helped identify their hideout, why have we not heard that the bandits have been destroyed with all the weapons available to the army?
