Ground floor
2 units of 2 bedrooms apartments
1 unit of 1 bedroom apartment

First floor

1 unit of 3 bedroom apartment
1 units of 2 bedroom apartments

Site Analysis

Plot Dimension = 12.3m x 30.75m
Plot Area = 368.75 square meters

Substructure

Setting out was done and foundation excavation commenced immediately

Foundation Type
We will be using Strip and Pad Foundation for this project.

Strip foundations are type of shallow foundation that are used to provide a continuous and level (but in our case stepped levels) strip of support to a linear structure, such as a wall built centrally above them.


Pad foundation : They are a form of spread foundation formed by rectangular, square ‘pads’ that support localized single-point loads (basically columns). This load is then spread by the pad to the bearing layer.

See it this way, Strip is the foundation for block walls, while Pad will serve as the foundation for columns



What necessitated this foundation type decision?
The subsoil have a very good bearing capacity.

Look across the gate of the attached picture to see how the site topography was originally.

It took 6 men a full day to dig trench for just two rooms

It's still not too good a measure as the samples previously excavated would have undergone geo-test if used for engineering works.

If am to assume; that means there is no structural design for this building.

All am saying is such assumptions Should always be neglected and all / full construction ethics be followed.

Am not disputing.
Was just asking and wondering if there is a geo-report as a design without such is the poorest of practice and invalidated.

If am wrong though, am open to learning something new.

Blinding

The purpose of this is to seal off underlying material and prevent dirt and soil from interfering with our structure.


Basically, it is made of weak concrete and it is applied both on our strip foundation as well as our Pad Footing.

Reinforement

Starter Bars

Starter bars are struts of steel rebar that are fixed into footings, slabs or walls in order to provide a reinforcement overlap, In this particular case, we are attaching our starter bar to the pad foundation footing. This serves as a monolithic structural connection between the foundation and columns

Placement and casting of our column base footing also known as isolated footing / pad foundation

The essence of pad foundation / isolated footing is to sustain, distribute applied load coming from the column.

it is designed to sustain moments and forces and the induced reactions and to ensure that any settlement which may occur shall be uniform.

Because of the sloppy nature of our plot, we are having about 7 course of blocks at the back of our foundation.

We will still chain the foundation with a beam moving forward

Often time, we are asked the question how deep should a foundation for a storey building go? The nature / topography of a given plot plays a role as to how deep a foundation should go.

On this particular project, our workers are already mounting temporary scaffold to enable them continue work.

Another advantage of doing a high foundation is that it helps rain water to run off naturally and prevent pooling.

We are introducing it in other to connect the columns and isolated footings (which are at different levels because of the sloppy terrain) thereby preventing the columns from buckling

We bought about 6tonnes of 12mm, 4tones of 16mm, about 400 bags of cement

First floor = 3 bedrooms with walk-in closet and 2 bedrooms all en-suite

3 cars can effectively park inside.
Total sqm = 368
