You and all those clowns who liked your post are kinda dense sha. How much was Pounds Sterling to Naira during OBJ's and Yar'Adua's era? Did they close the borders like your mumu president? OBJ was particularly interested in promoting an agro-economy and many giant strides and foundations were achieved then which improved investor's confidence. Despite, he didn't take draconian policies like your NEPA certificated bag of bones in Aso Villa. So how come forex had an appreaciable strength during these periods when borders weren't closed compare to now when it has in the past years. Have you looked around your environment of late? Does this look investor friendly to you? I lost count on how many companies have had to shutdown, adjust their business models or battling with stupid APC led government policies. From Opay, to GoOkada, to Twitter, to tech companies, to crypto firms etc.

You president, his economic team and minions constituting nuisance on the social media space with propaganda are just foolish.

During OBJ regime how many of us have smartphones and purchasing goods from Ali Express, Amazon etc and putting pressure on Naira. Or do you think those transactions are settle in Naira by CBN? What's the non-oil revenue during OBJ compare to today? How many locally made goods are in market during those period?
Why is electricity, railway, roads not in other then? How many Aircrafts or military equipment do we purchase for unforeseen circumstances?. How many of of our bugget going into fighting insurgency then? The failure of yesterday is what we are battling today.

I feel offended by your comment and it's not because I am from that tribe you're talking about but I feel you need to understand what it takes to produce before you come out in a forum as this to spew trash.

Do you know the average cost of producing a plastic bag in the present day Nigeria?

How cheap is electricity if at all we have it and how cheap is the alternative?

Do you know how much it cost to move raw materials from your village to Ogun state or other factory locations across the country?

How many producing countries of the world do you see that have touts on highways with legal backing to extort commuters of their hard earned money?

Again, have you attempted to produce anything at scale before and do you have report of companies that have wind up within their first 2 years in Nigeria and what is your lord Buhari doing about it?
What a summarization of the conclution of the whole matter. I give it to you bros. grin

All of Una wey dey compare money equivalence and purchasing power should realise that there is never a basis for comparison between one economy and another. Though it may seem like simple mathematical proportions, there are numerous factors that come into play before you can compare the values of different currencies.
If you earn NGN300k/month in Naija
It translates to NGN10k/day
and NGN1,112/hour 8am-5pm Naija work hours.
how many loaves of bread can your hourly pay buy in Naija?
While someone earning just 10€ can buy 20 leaves of bread with their hourly pay.

On the flip side, someone paying 1.2m/ANNUM as rent for 1bedroom flat in Naija will be complaining of expensive rent. That translates to 100k/month.
Same apartment here in Europe goes for 800k/MONTH!

So, it is not that easy to compare all these metrics.

majority of Nigerians earn 30k

Can you evaluate the real cost of living to the value of each currency in eachcountry?
What can you get in Nigeria with NGN780 viź a viź how much such item costs in the country the alternate currency is in use.
Example how many bottles of coke can you buy in Nigeria for NGN780, approximately 5.
How much is a bottle of coke in the UK?
Definitely it's above 1pound.

You're so myopic. Can you believe yourself. You mean a shilling or pound shilling which is equivalent to 780 naira is useless. Do we have 1naira note or coin in Nigeria SMH. You're obviously a child. No insult intended but your assertion is myopic. Most of our currencies are useless as we speak. 5naira, 10naira, 20naira.

He is obviously shifting the blame of the uselessness of Naira on UK Pounds either deliberately or just ignorantly...

Is it the fault of Pound that it remains One pound in the UK then turns to 750 Naira in Nigeria??

To make it simple to him...another Nation's money is a big money in Nigeria while same money maintains it value in it's country...may be he would get it that way

There is a huge export operation going on just that people don't know if you are not in the field. Do you know eg my paddy takes orders for supermarket chains, for corner shops owned by Pakistanis, by jews, they brand them locally here in naija, eg hammads, or Joey's cassava flakes(using garri as example). From phone call to the market here in naija the garri is supplied, the packaging people pack it and the shipper picks it up for export to the ports. So many others from around the world are doing same from Nigeria.
Go to any major drinks depot and you will see them loading drinks for export. Years back in Dublin I hear Nigerian Stout was the highest seller.
We export but could do more. Cocoa, cashew, timber, cassava, millet, we export.
Recently I learnt ships, aircraft's prefer to leave naija empty because the stress, curruption is just too much, it does not make business sense to them. A ship will bring goods to naija and go back empty refusing to carry goods!
That is part of the mismanagement I spoke about.

You have spoken like an average Nigerian who like suffering.

Closing your border is the last step to self sufficiency. First of all you need to make sure there is enabling environment first in your country and all the requirements for production have been made available before you close borders. Things like Electricity, security and enabling tax scheme.

We all know these things aren't available. Farmers cannot go to farm any longer because of bandits and herdsmen. So we are not even producing food at the moment. Then the Government blocked the borders where we would have gotten alternatives.

Even the US doesn't completely block it's borders. If a quality item is produced cheaper in Nigeria people will have no reason to buy the foreign alternative and it's importers will stop importing it. As an economist I know this for sure and more.
