All the French tutors I've been seeing online especially the Nigerians doesn't make learning this language exciting with their tuition fees. Duolingo and other French learning apps + YouTube videos have been helping me a lot. Got some PDFs too, I'm sure it would take so long to be able to speak it well but that's cheaper and you learn at your own pace

It was a very big struggle and that is why it shouldn’t be a big deal for people to seek out tutors especially for directions. Let’s just say I was directionless so I learned every and all things at once and gave up like 20 times but each time I remembered the progress I was making I would continue again. I kept learning until I covered every area that I needed to learn. The difficulty came in speaking because I had no one to speak to so I channeled all my energy into reading and listening (I listened to variety of French videos and audios sans cesse) but there’s a big world of difference between understanding and speaking.

It’s been exactly two years since I started learning and I wrote DELF B2 just under a year of learning. It was the very first time I would ever speak out my french to someone that would understand me. I used to just do it in my head only or just record my speaking. I did pass the exam very well but I couldn’t boldly tell you I could speak French, I just prepared very well for the exam and I guess I was lucky.

My thorough understanding of French came when I picked up a job as a French tutor few months later and I had to draft out like a curriculum had to really understand concepts, reread, and solidify the things I already knew and also I met people online who I did language exchange with. I talk to them in French and English so we both improved in our target language.

If anyone asks me what resources helped me the most then I’ll tell them this textbook; the complete idiot’s guide to learning French. It gave me a head start that I couldn’t be more thankful for.

Then the next best resource was Learn French with Elsa. Best tutor on YouTube hands down. She has few videos in English but I found her when I started picking french so I caught on very quickly to her videos in French. She’s so good.

Last best resource was a podcast I listened to every time called Inner French. That was what helped me for my exam because of the essay- like read.

Your greatest asset would be passion and dedication. If you naturally love French then it will keep you going or you have a strong reason like leaving the country since yesterday. I had both anyways. So yeah, that’s it.

What makes writing difficult for you? If you speak sufficiently and are good with pronunciation then you should be good with writing because french orthography is even more straightforward than English.

Well I would say I have a moderate level of prononciation and grammar rules, however I was not really writing when I started learning since there was no tutor to give me exercises to do or tasks to write. I also didn’t bother to write since I had no one to correct me. Now whenever I try to write , i kinda lack ideas or points so I’m always blocked.

So what can help usually is sketching. Always jot down ideas first and then build up on them. You can always think in English first when it comes to writing. Especially for exams, to make the least possible errors compose in English and learn the art of translation.

Also keep improving your vocabulary, then the right words will come to your head more easily.
