Death is the cessation of life, although there are different types of life. There is the natural life or biological and there is the spiritual life or eternal life.
Life itself has its source from God, God is the one who sustains all life. When one is cut off from God the source of life, he dies.

This is what happened to Adam and Eve in the garden of eden, they were cut of from God and they lost their spiritual life and many years later lost their biological life.

Every human has a biological life but however not the spiritual life, and one day will lose their biological life and face eternal death.

what happen after death

It is Judgment! Yes it is the judgment to determine the abode of the soul depending on the state of that person, if that person has the spiritual life then he will be with the Lord but if he has no life then he is condemned and cast into hell!

Dear reader do you have the spiritual life of God also called the eternal life?
This is what Jesus said
John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm, that's exactly what God's word said about the dead:

For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing at all, nor do they have any more reward, because all memory of them is forgotten. Also, their love and their hate and their jealousy have already perished, and they no longer have any share in what is done under the sun! Ecclesiastes 9:5-6

The only hope the Bible gives us regarding our dead loved ones is a resurrection:

O that in the Grave you would conceal me, That you would hide me until your anger passes by, That you would set a time limit for me and remember me! If a man dies, can he live again? I will wait all the days of my compulsory service Until my relief comes. You will call, and I will answer you. You will long for the work of your hands! Job 14:13-15 compare to John 5:28-29

The first Judgment is to determine where the soul is to be after death and the last judgment is to determine where the resurrected humans would finally end up forever.
