Would You Rather Live A Short But Successful Life Or A Long And Unfulfilled One? by Magnoliaa(f): 11:05am On Feb 22, 2022
The story of the Kenyan man who returned home after laboring in vain for 42 years got me thinking, and especially when someone made a comment saying he returned home alive, at least.

For a second, I thought what's the gain? But then I know life can be worth celebrating, inspite of anything - or not? Then a question came to me: would you rather die now, and die 'happy' if you could achieve everything you desire?

And sure, 'success' is open to our various definitions of it... So, is the long life itself success? Just living simple everyday, eating, drinking, not aspiring for more, not seeing things, not meeting people, for as long as you do it for a stretch of time?

I don't attempt to make this an either/or scenario, but I just had to phrase it that way for the purpose of the topic and your contributions. They'll be greatly appreciated.

So what do you think?

Fulfillment.

Unfulfillment is the primary cause of depression and suicide.

We can't say the old man is unfulfilled due to his losing everything and returning to his Homeland broke, because meeting his son and just returning home is a huge relief and form of peace to him. It had had always been his goal. Guess that's a long and fulfilled life from his side.

Who really knows. 6 and 9.

I'm personally not a fan of old age because i have seen it mess with people. I will choose a short successful life over an unfulfilled one.

True. I think it *could* be (his goal). I was looking at it from the angle of his initial goal being a greener pasture and material wealth, etc.

So while he didn't succeed in that, his aim might have shifted and he would would have come to value new things. Like familial ties and so.

The thing is success depends of individual perception.
At the end one thing is certain, "death". so regardless how long you live its really irrelevant.

I have always wanted to invent one thing. Something that generations yet unborn will remember me for. If I am able to achieve that early, I am ready to go.

When you take a deeper look at life, it's rat-race within a circle. There is absolutely nothing physical to take out of it. The only thing I worry about is if pain, and memories are real after death because those two are abstract.

You've just mentioned something important about this fulfillment of a thing: over time — with experience— goals change.

Going by his initial goal he is unfulfilled. Living long would only mean he's actually miserable. But I can't see him as not being fulfilled for some reason.

Fulfillment stems from what each person sees as success. And success is different things, if we aren't forced by societal expectations. In the past I considered myself a success being able to read a novel a day. That was the ultimate to me and I felt fulfilled. But growing up I realized that that was not considered success. I had to become the success that people spoke about. Nowadays I'm back to what I believe success is. It has changed though.

People shouldn't judge others by societal expectations ideally, because there's no fulfillment in life other than being happy doing whatever you want to do.

And who is to tell if you will ever get what you want?

That's the mystery of life. That man probably never dreamed of or wanted to live an unfulfilled life, let alone for that long. Yet that's what he got.

Okay... for the first part of your response... say you literally have everything in this world. Would you still not want to live to an old age? Methink old age, aside the natural changes that comes with it, is dependent to some extent on a previous, youthful lifestyle. On the other hand, no know would know for sure the card old age would deal them. There are old people who are as alive and active and fresh as new - free of those mess you talk about.

Omo. E confound me gan sef. Like I can literally have everything I consider (my idea) of success. Right now on a platter. Like if I don finish achieving everything and nothing remain, watin I still wan dey wait for?

But then can it ever be possible than nothing at all remain? undecided

Myles Munroe or so words is ringing in my mind about dying empty (the positive kind of empty, after giving your all o). Let's assume I've even done all of that now, I have 'lived' a purposeful life --- ohhh, how much of purposeful is enough purpose sef? How you fit quantify purpose to know you've given all purpose and there's nothing remaining to do?

embarassed Be like I just dey stress my brain for nothing. Sighs.

...Just this morning I heard Rita's husband passed away after 16 years of marriage together without a child...
An ex boyfriend and the first man to ever propose marriage to me also passed away late last year. I didn't know about it till last week, he died without children but he always wanted to have them too and was into the whole marriage, kids and family life thing...

I know single people who died in the Bellview air crash some years ago, they probably wanted ABC and XYZ too, but never got it....

Hmm. Your take has got me thinking a lot of things.

On a lighter note, what does this even mean? 6 and 9 are numbers, when you put them together you get 69 cheesy. When I say you are an ashawo now, no follow me argue.

grin grin grin

Perspectives, kinda. 6 upside down, from the right is 9, and 9 downside up from the left is 6...

The moment I no longer have a purpose to live for, even if I am filthy rich, I will begin to die from that moment.

I can't live without a purpose, I am only alive because I got a mission to accomplish, so to answer your question, even if it's tomorrow that I accomplished my mission, I will surely die because death is from the mind. I don't even worry about death, I just live from day to day.

I see people saying “long and fulfilled” . while I’m sure that’s what literally most people want, I think the question here is if it was either short fulfilled or long unfulfilled (long and fulfilled not being an option), which would you choose?
Na fear dey worry all of una grin

@OP, I’d choose short and fulfilled. If I had everything I ever wanted and get to enjoy it for a few decades, that’s better than long and miserable. IMO.
