Hello guys! I need your advice on this issue that has been giving me sleepless night for more than a year now. Am a youth below 25yrs.
2016 I dropped out of the polytechnic because I never knew why I was there in the first place. All my life,I follow strict orders from my parents about what I do and how I live my life. The saying has always been "you are the first son,so u must become an engineer". I remember vividly when I wanted to pass over into ss1,I told my father I was going for art. He frowned totally at it and took me to a lecture for counseling. I gave them my reason that "I have always tried my best at maths and am never good at it",even my teachers knows I was very good at Art related subjects. I always top the class in drawings that my work once made it into the art studio. But the lecturer told me that I can still meet up in the future, that am lazy and it's not hard. So I later wrote jamb and barely made it. But my parents worked my way into part-time study auchi poly. Man.... It wasn't funny at all. Everything was purely mathematics. And my parents wasn't the rich type who can afford to always send me money for blocking. I tried all my best, read all night, went for extra tutoring. But I can't still understand simple theories. My GP dropped so bad that I just gave up in 2016. When I dropped out,I was just roaming the street from bet9ta to a random barber shop to gist. Everyone saw me as worthless even my family members. My father made arrangements for me to go and learn mechanic, but after two weeks I stopped. I just knew that wasn't for me. He then asked me to go back to school,I told him that I can't because I have gone too far into science and even if I have to go back to school,I will have to start all over again. Even at that, iam very lost in life because I threw all my drive for art in the thrash many years ago to pursue science. Am just like in the middle of the dessert. 2017 I told him I wanted to do business, with the mind set that I might soon be independent and maybe discover myself/passion then. They didn't support it with their heart at all. I went to learn how to repair mobile phone, after learning my father asked me to go and learn all over again for he is not satisfied. I got angry and left home from a friend's advice to go and work at bet9ja at another state. After two months,I came back home with about 100k and I sent it to that friend of mine who advised me to go and work at bet9ja cos he stays at Lagos and he said he can send me phone accessories at wholesale price so that I can start phone business at small scale. But scammed me. My family judged me for more than a month, cos I was always at home helpless and indoors with regret. So I decided to use the little I had to start a road side repair shop close to my street, but it wasn't paying off after about three months. I had the inspiration to start a YouTube channel, but I never had a camera neither did I know what the channel would be about.... I just had three options about what the channel would be about. Fitness (because am huge and a little bit muscular, comedy(because people always say am funny),short films (because have got alot of stories to tell). So December 2018,i started doing odd jobs. Which my parents didn't support, instead they keep pressuring me to get back to school while I keep telling them I want to do business and need capital to start. 2019 two of my junior sisters got into the university. January 2019 i got a job at a company that pays me less than 20k. The job wasn't easy at all. I always cry when am alone and thinking about where I am in life. After five months,I saved about 95k. Used 55k to apply for Keke for hired purchase at a company, but they said the one left has been driven for two weeks, and I said I would manage it. After a week I noticed it had fault and decided to return it so that the company can give me another one,but my father opposed it that I should return it and ask for a refund, that he and my mother will raise money and borrow money from his relative to buy me a Keke. My parents made sure they borrowed all the refunded money from me and never payed back to me. I was just stranded again for about a month before the Keke was bought. My father's relative gave us the money, but to be paid back with interest. To my surprise my parents said I will also pay them every week, with all sorts of rules that follows it,like telling me "when to leave, when to come back, where to go and where not to go". No matter what I pass through in a week would not stop them from collecting that week's money, rather it would be added to the next. Even when I had an accident due to I wasn't perfect at driving. They never told me sorry, nor asked if I was injured. I spent alot of money putting the Keke into order, and didn't go-to work for about three days, and they still collected that week's money. Depression has eaten so deep into my life. I remember 2017 when I attempted suicide, but woke up at an hospital. All I pray to God now is that I don't want to live long but he should grant me the power to leave a great mark on Earth. Now my father needs 150k to get back a bus he was driving on hired purchase from a company he's driving it for so that it can become his,he's now looking helpless and looking for who to borrow him. The thing is that I have about 100k I have saved and plan on using to buy a camera so that I can buy a camera for me to start YouTube, for I have it deep in my heart and am always telling my friends how I will soon start a YouTube channel. So should I give up this dream and give the money to my father or should I buy the camera and gradually save to give to him cos he has a deadline of December? Please guys I need your advice.

Your parents are partially to be blamed for the problems you have encountered in life. Keep your money, don't give it out.

You began bragging to your friends about U-tube business, even when you have not started it. Stop bragging, allow your plans to materialize. You should learn to keep your mouth sealed.

Better be sure YouTube business is the right path to follow before you put that money into it.

Somebody will give birth to a child and still insist on messing their own baby up. Haba

People who draw are they not human beings

Better keep your money oh, sorry about that. When your business booms you can now help your father out.

And you should start drawing again and displaying your art on social media. You never can tell, maybe somebody will see and buy.

It would also help reawaken the creative tendency you were forced to neglect and may serve as some kind of therapy for you so you will think more clearly about your steps

Use the money to sort yourself out. If buying a camera for YouTube is what you want to use it for, you're going to have to stand out from the many already-established channels b|c those are all competitive niches. Moreover, you don't have to throw away your passion for Art. You can still pursue it or incorporate it into the YouTube channel. Good luck.

Buy your camera and do your YouTube thing. Let your parents sort themselves out. They are partly to blame for all this.
Mind you, if you give your father the 100k, he will still call you lazy in future.
Best of luck.

Dear OP, sorry about your predicament. I have controlling parents like yours but I don't live with them. Whenever you want to make a decision about your life, tell noone. Only seek professional advice so as to make an informed decision. I was held back at some points in my life by my family, eventually I took my decision on a critical issue, messaged my parents of my actions after the deed has been done as there was no going back. I hope you become financially independent soon so as to be off their grip.
You also need to be focused on something or build expertise in something as someone said earlier. All the best in your endeavours.

Young man, have you been bewitched?!

Haven't you heard that the blind cannot lead the blind? You need to work hard at your goals, so that you will have enough (a source of income) to enable you support your parents and younger siblings in the future. I mean, who eats or dashes another his fishing net.

C'mon! Be selfish for once!

Well......if that's the line you've chosen, so be it.

I believe you have studied it well. You do not have so much capital, so it is adviceable to start something with less risks/capital intensity. Eg. poultry if you've got a land, foodstuffs ie you rent a space in the market, etc. Nigerian youths love flashy businesses/white collar jobs.

I was shocked when I saw the fish production in Nigeria. Statistics shows that Nigerians are unable to produce even half of the fish it consumes. Talkless of rice and poultry....hmmmm.

Beware, YouTube stuffs could be expensive, you may need more money to promote the site after dumping money to start it. I could be wrong anyway......it is well.

You are right about that

I wanted to say something but it seems the guy lacks motivation already.

I would rather he does something more concrete than Youtube but at the same time, he needs to do something he can keep his mind on so that he wont start sliding downhill again

He might still be the next best thing in the blogosphere, anyway

Op see ehn...to make it in this life, you've got to believe in the cause you are in and pursue it to the fullest, letting no one hold you back, not even God!
My story is similar to yours, just that I wasn't a sheep like you to do as I am told.
I was 17 after high school, decided to join the family business rather than go to any damn school.I was good at it and saw what my brothers didn't see.
I showed them to my mum,she took my proposal hook, line and sinker and invested in it massively but with someone else and her running the damn business while she shipped me off to university.
It wasn't what I wanted, dropped out after 3weeks and went to Europe to hustle.
I frustrate pass you then,HOHA!
Came back to Africa, started school again fully sponsored by her,saw a business opportunity in Trans-African trade, told my mum, requested for loan to start but she started yapping about school bla bla bla...
I no answer am,dropped out again and use my fees, rent, utility money plus my best friend's investment to start it.
Few years down the line,I have built a very good business and still got a degree.
My mom dey respect me die because of the bold steps she knows I can take!No bagger tells me what to do.
I hate it!
So my friend, your life is in your hands, take your decisions for your cause without ever looking back.
That's what being an adult entails.
Also,100k and YouTube business?are you mad?
Don't you know things like that takes a VERY LONG TIME to pay off and 100k can't sustain it?
To me,buy off that bus lease off your father and either own the bus instead and drive it or make him work for you and clearly show him who owns what,no time for sentiments.
When you make enough money, you can go chase your desired YouTube business.
Dem no dey give person money!know this from today.
I personally don't do it!better learn now or have yourself to blame.
Goodluck!

I have done alot of study into fish farming in my area. But no one in my area would lease his or her land to anyone (greed of the igbos). And crime is so high that we fear coming back home around 8pm. I also thought of buying an okada or second hand Keke to give to someone, but there are countless of cases where by they run away with it. Even my friends that borrow money from me never return it and still act like all is cool. I would rather invest in myself and bear the loss... I would love to do a business with the money I have and later on pursue my YouTube dream, but it's so small to do any reasonable business with. And come to think of it I already have a business am doing "riding Keke". That 100k I have was raised in less than 5 weeks. It would be a great achievement for me to start this YouTube stuff that has been on my mind now,and before February next year raise money to study a course at the University even if it's a professional course while supporting myself with the Keke. And maybe people will start believing in me and give me the help I deserve.... Thanks for your advice man!!!
