Chapter 1- The Great Commission

And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” (Matthew 28:18-20)

This is the great commission given to the church. It is an instruction not a suggestion. We have however re-phrased it to mean, ‘come ye therefore’. We have built and are still building beautiful places of worship and invite the sinners to come in. A large percentage of sinners don’t go to church. The church is not fashionable to them. Only a compromising church will entice sinners in large numbers.
If we want to experience growth, we must go to where the sinners are and communicate the gospel to them. It is not an overstatement to say that over 90% of professing believers have never won a soul and seldom participate in soul winning activities. The same applies to some Pastors, Deacons and Deaconesses. They limit the work of the gospel to the four walls of their churches. This is not the pattern Jesus left for us to follow.

The church is the light of the world and the salt of the earth.

“Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:13-16).

Ironically, the church appears to be putting her light under a bushel. We have refused to communicate the gospel to the dying world. Reinhard Bonkke says, ‘the church that is not reaching the lost is lost itself. How true this statement really is.

One of the reasons God left us on earth after we got born again is that we might communicate the good news to the lost souls. In other words, we were saved to save others. If we don’t tell them, nobody will. No one can be saved until he hears the gospel. The preaching of the gospel is the only means by which men can be saved.

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (Romans 1:16, 10:14-17)

The believer is the hope of the world. Countless millions are trooping to hell on a daily basis and most of us are not bothered. Angels are not permitted to preach the gospel. It is committed to our trust. It is our responsibility.

“To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.” (2 Corinthians 5:19)

When a responsibility is given to you by your boss, he knows you can carry it out. He expects a positive feedback. If we continue like this, what are we going to tell our Lord Jesus on the day of reckoning?

We should count it a privilege to be chosen for this assignment. If the president of your country chooses you to be part of the country’s representative, I believe you will celebrate it. You will be proud to speak on behalf of your government. In the same sense, God’s children should even be more proud as they are representing the King of kings and the President of presidents. It is the highest honour that will attract the highest reward. We should therefore carry out the task with pride and dignity.

Jesus told Peter,

“And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:19).

This is the best fishing business; Fishing men out of the mud of sin and pit of hell. We have been chosen for this assignment and Jesus did not make a wrong choice.

“Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.” (John 15:16)

The first orientation he gives to his converts is that of soul winning.

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take
my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30).

He invites sinners to come to him. Then he asks them to take his yoke upon themselves. His yoke is the burden he has for the lost souls. Jesus wants as to share in this burden. He urges us to take it as an easy and light burden.

There are quite a few reasons so many believers shy away from soul winning activities. We will discuss some of them and give appropriate counsel.

1. Most of Our Churches Do Not Give the New Converts Soul Winning Orientation.

A lot of our churches do not have soul winning programmes and as such do not even give the new converts soul winning orientation. Many a time, we are just interested in attendance records rather than genuine conversion of the souls. It is therefore not uncommon to see quite a few members that are very committed in their local assembly but are not born again. I heard about a woman who played organ for a church for about 50 years but was not born again.

The desperation by some of our Pastors to increase in numbers has made them to be less concerned about the true spiritual state of their members. Some of these souls may have even responded to altar calls and it ends there. If the souls that respond to altar calls are not properly counseled and followed up, they may not be established in the faith. It is like picking a piece of banana out of the mud and you let it drop back into the mud.

Churches should give their new converts soul winning orientation. They should put up structures that monitors soul winning activities and ensures that all members participate one way or the other. It is a subject that should be frequently addressed from the pulpit.

2. Too Busy to Be Involved.

There are so many who use their jobs, businesses or schools as an excuse not to be involved in soul winning activities. They give such excuses because they are not conscious of eternity. In actual sense, the life we are living on earth is a preparation for eternity. So, when you spend your life on things that have no eternal value, you are invariably living a wasted life. No wonder Jesus said,

“Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.” (John 6:27)

If you continue to use your job or any other thing as an excuse to negate your divine assignment, you are investing your life in a wasted venture. You are also violating spiritual rule which says,

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Matthew 6:33)

The assignment God has given you must be given priority. God will never take a second place in your life. You either give him first place or no place. When you refuse to give him first place, you will have no place in the kingdom of God.

Apostle Paul says;

“Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.” (Ephesians 5:17).

You cannot focus on your personal agenda and neglect the assignment your Creator gave to you. This is the height of irresponsibility. It reveals a life characterized with selfishness and rebellion. How will you treat your child that refuses to obey your instructions? You certainly won’t take it lightly. Do you think God will take lightly all those who rebel against his command? Our memory should not fail us to remember what happened to Jonah who refused to obey God to preach to the people of Nineveh that they might repent. Jonah was fortunate to have been given a second chance otherwise; he would have remained in hell till this date. I know some of us might be shocked to hear that Jonah went to hell. What most of us are acquainted with is that Jonah was in the belly of the fish for 3 days and 3 nights. That was his body. His soul went to hell. It was from the midst of hell that he cried out for deliverance.

“Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish's belly, And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; OUT OF THE BELLY OF HELL CRIED I, and thou heardest my voice. For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me. Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple. The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head. I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me forever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God. When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple.” (Jonah 2:1-7)

Jonah said he cried out from the belly of hell. That couldn’t have been the fish belly. He also said he went down to the bottoms of the mountains and was locked up by iron bars. Hell has compartment like our earthly prisons that is enclosed with bars.

My dear readers; fear God and do his commandment. Stop using your job, business as an excuse not to win souls. Your soul winning activity should even begin with your colleagues in your office or your business partner. What if God permits your life to be taken from you? There will be no more job or business to do.

Our Lord Jesus showed us how he responded to the assignment God gave to him.

“For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not. But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me. Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. Jesus saith unto them, my meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work. (John 6:38 ,7:28-29, 9:3-4 ,4:34)

Apostle Paul revealed to us his disposition to the heavenly assignment. He actually placed a curse in himself if he refuses to preach the gospel.

“For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!” (1 Corinthians 9:16).

Represent God’s kingdom as a worthy Ambassador. Don’t be complacent to this divine assignment. God is counting on you and me. I urge all Pastors to show good examples to their flocks by leading them to fish out souls for God’s kingdom. And we must do it with a sense of urgency.

3. I Want to but I Am Ashamed.

Will you be ashamed to identify with the Governor of your state? So, why would anyone be ashamed of identifying with our Lord Jesus? Paul said,

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” (Romans 1:16)

If Jesus was not ashamed to die for you, why should you be ashamed to spread the good news to others? Our Lord Jesus warned;

“For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels.” (Luke 9:26).

Which one is the greater shame? The shame of witnessing for Jesus or the shame of being left behind when he comes to take his people home. Or even worse; the shame of being thrown into the Lake of fire on the final judgment day. The choice is yours.
Luke 12:8-9 remarks;

“Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God: But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God.”

Apostle Paul gave the same warning. “If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us” (2 Timothy 2:12).

4. I Want to but I Do Not Have the Boldness.

What you need is the infilling of the Holy Ghost. One of his ministries is to embolden us to preach the gospel. “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” (Acts 1:cool

A good example of the difference the Holy Spirit makes in the life of a believer is the case of Peter. Peter denied Jesus thrice during his trial but had a dramatic transformation when he got filled with the Holy Spirit. Even in the face of death threat, he continued to proclaim the gospel. Here was his response to those who warned them not to preach or teach in the name of Jesus;

“But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.” (Acts 4:19-20)

The doctrine of the infilling of the Holy Ghost has been watered down by most of our churches. They make it look optional. The infilling of the Holy Spirit is so important that our Lord Jesus couldn’t start his earthly ministry until he was baptized with the Holy Spirit the same day John the Baptist baptized him with water – Matthew 3:16.

He also told the disciples after his resurrection that they should not depart from Jerusalem but wait for the promise of the Father– Acts 1:4-8.

You must routinely plan a programme to get new converts filled with the Holy Spirit to embolden them to preach the gospel.

5. My Parents/Uncle/Husband Won’t Permit Me.

Whatever kind of relationship you are into that exerts some level of authority on you, it shouldn’t make you violate God’s instruction. Conflicts of loyalty come when one party you are responsible to is not in the Lord. They do not understand why you have to give so much dedication to your Christian Service. As such, they attempt to frustrate your effort by giving counter instruction when it is even uncalled for.

Concerning children, you are told to obey your Parents in the Lord. If your Parents say you shouldn’t go to church, you are not supposed to obey such command. Your loyalty should be first to the Lord Jesus. He will not take a second place. A lot of kids compromise their Christian faith because of fear of what their parents will do to them if they disobey. Hear what Jesus says on this issue;

“If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.” (Luke 14:26-27)

So, if you show more respect for your parents instruction than that of God, you stand the risk of been disqualified. That means, you could lose your salvation and end up in hell. Hence Jesus also said;

“And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Matthew 10:28)

It is much more dreadful to face the judgment of God than the punishment of your parents. You should not however use your church activities to evade domestic responsibilities.
The same goes with husband wife relationships. Most ungodly husbands love to control their wives to the point of stopping or limiting their spiritual commitment. Some wives yield to such control in the guise of saving their marriages. Such wives have denied the faith which could cost them their salvation. The Bible says;

“For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it.” (Mark 8:35).

Many a time that thing you are trying to preserve will eventually be lost because you broke spiritual principle. There are testimonies of a few godly women who refuse to compromise their Christian faith in spite of threat from their husbands. One of such women was the wife of Smith Wigglesworth.
When Evangelist Smith of blessed memory was out of faith, he told his wife not to attend weekly meetings. But she defied the instruction and went. When she came back, she found out he had locked her out. The next day as he opened, he expected a fight from her. But instead of a fight, she went ahead and prepared his favourite breakfast. Brother Smith while on the breakfast table felt convicted on his act and got reconciled back to God. He became one of the greatest Evangelist the world has ever known because of a woman who refuse to compromise her stand for the Lord.

Fear God and pledge your loyalty to him first. Stop using your parents or your husband as an excuse not to respond to soul winning activities. We shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ at the time appointed. Your parents or your husband will not be there to defend you. You will be judged according to what is written in the word.
One more reason quite a few believers don’t participate in soul winning activities is the compromising life they live. It will be difficult to reach out to the lost when you are living in sin. What are you going to tell them? It is even more difficult if your double life standard is not hidden.

Ask God for his mercy and go back to him and he will accept you. The life of sin only leads to shame, death and eternal separation from God. Don’t gamble with your life. There is no better time to serve God than now. The pleasure of sin does not last. The Bible says;

“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.” (1 John 2:15-17).

Would you let God use you to reach out to lost souls? He uses vessels that have purged themselves from the filth of this world. The choice is yours.

“But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work.” (2 Timothy 2:20-21).

Chapter Two

And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.” (Mark 16:15-16)

Besides organized evangelism, there are other means through which we have been positioned to reach the lost. In Acts 1:8, Jesus says;

“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”

Notice the order the places where mentioned. He started with Jerusalem which was their immediate environment. You don’t have to even travel thousands of miles to win souls. Start from your immediate sphere of contact; your place of work, your school, your business centre, your close friends and your family members. That is your world you should reach out to. You are not where you are by accident. God placed you there primarily to affect them with the gospel.

You are the most suitable person to reach them because they are people you relate with on daily basis. You don’t have to halt activity in order to communicate the gospel in your place of work. There are different strategies you could adopt. You can share tracts or even invitation card for a programme. You could also start a lunch hour fellowship. You don’t have to be a Pastor to do that. If you are conscious of your responsibility to preach the gospel, the Holy Spirit will guide you and give you the required wisdom on how to go about it even when it seems practically impossible. The Bible says,

“Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.” (Matthew 10:16)

See your job not just as an opportunity to earn a living but much more as an opportunity to spread the good news of our Lord Jesus. A lot of people get so engrossed with their jobs and watch their colleagues troop into hell. You misrepresent God’s kingdom when you refuse to preach the gospel in your sphere of contact.
When a country sends out spies to another country, they have to take a job to enable them carry out their spy work. While on that job, they don’t forget why they are there. In the same sense, Christians should not forget why we are here on earth. We should live our lives not to please ourselves but him that has saved us.

“For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself. For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord's.” (1 Corinthians 6:20, Romans 14:7-cool

What about the world of student? This is another mission field. Students should devise means to reach out to their fellow students. Don’t just be engrossed with your studies and forget to touch lives with the gospel. You could be the only hope of salvation to that student that is few seconds away from hell. People die on a daily basis, both young and old. God will not ask you of your certificates or degrees in heaven. He will be more concerned about how many lives you touched with the gospel.

There are some worlds that are very difficult to penetrate through organized evangelism but the believer that is planted in such environment can easily reach them. For instance, it might be difficult for a civilian to reach out to military personnel especially the high ranking ones. But those in their circle can reach them more easily. What about the world of lawyers, medical personnel and many others?

Another mission field is the business world. There are those that are always on transit due to the nature of their jobs. Only those in their circles can easily reach them more easily.
Perhaps, one of the most difficult mission fields are those in clubs. It is a very challenging field since it is uncommon to see professing believers work in such environment. It is not impossible to reach them but it is obviously difficult. One suggestion I can offer is to offer some of these ladies free ride and possibly free dinner and use the opportunity to share the gospel. Don’t attempt it if you do not have self-control over your flesh.

We should not also forget our families. In fact, this is where your soul winning should start from. God’s plan is a family plan. When he saved Noah, his family was included. Lot’s family was also carried along when God rescued them from his judgment in the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. What about the harlot, Rahab? She was instrumental to the salvation of her household when she hid the spies that came to search out the land of Jericho.

A lot of believers are so engrossed with church activities but their parents are not saved. Be bold enough to talk to your father that is in the secret cult to embrace Christ. You are the best person to reach him.

As you prepare to start your day’s activity, ask God to use you to touch someone with the gospel of our Lord Jesus. You are the light in the place you have been planted. Let your light so shine through the preaching of the gospel and by your good works.

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10)

Chapter 3- The Power

The preaching of the gospel of our Lord Jesus without the demonstration of power is mere religion. Paul said;

“Through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God; so that from Jerusalem, and round about unto Illyricum, I have fully preached the gospel of Christ.” (Romans 15:19)

The demonstration of this power is not limited to ordained ministers of the gospel only but that is what it appears to be. Even some ministers believe that there are those that are specially gifted to demonstrate this power. It is true that there are special gifts of faith, healings and working of miracles but it does not negate the fact that every believer has a measure of authority to exercise over demons and sicknesses.

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.” (John 14:12-14)

“And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” (Mark 16:17-18)

These scriptures are proof positive that every one that believes can demonstrate the power of God. Even during the earthly ministry of Jesus, it was not only the 12 disciples that God used to showcase his power. At an incidence, 70 of his disciples gave testimony of how the demons were subject to them. First, let’s look at the commission;

“After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come. Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest. Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way. And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house. And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again. And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house. And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you: And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.” (Luke 10:1-9)

Here is their testimony and Jesus response;
“And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” (Luke 10:17-19)

If these disciples could have this testimony, how much now that Jesus is glorified and the gift of the Holy Spirit is already poured on us.
I would like to throw more light on the infilling of the Holy Spirit here. Like I said in a preceding section, the church should place emphasis on the baptism of the Holy Spirit rather than on water baptism that has no spiritual virtue.

The Holy Spirit baptism begins at new birth and it is consummated when you are filled with the evidence of speaking in other tongues. It is the twin power of speaking in tongues and the release of words of faith that unlocks the power of the Holy Spirit.

“And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.” (Genesis 1:2-3)

God at creation never spoke a word until his Spirit moved. When you speak in tongues, it will cause the Spirit of God on your inside to be stirred up and ready for action.
There are some professing believers who say that one can be filled with the Holy Spirit without speaking in other tongues. This assertion is not consistent with the scriptures. We will look at virtually all the New Testament scriptures related to this issue in discussion so we can help a few skeptics renew their minds on this subject.
First, Jesus said that speaking in tongues is a sign that should follow all who believes;

“And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues.” (Mark 16:17)

Are you a believer? Then the sign is expected to follow you unless you disqualify yourself from been a believer. It will be wrong to conclude that speaking in tongues is not for everybody simply because you attempted to receive and the sign seems not to have followed. Making this deduction is the same as saying that healing is not for everybody because you did not receive your healing. But we do know that healing is for everyone according to the word of God even though everyone does not receive healing during healing meetings.

Let’s look at the instances people got filled with the Holy Spirit and what happened thereafter;

“And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” (Acts 2:1-4)

“While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.” (Acts 10:44-46)

If we look at these two passages, we will see some consistency. As soon as they got filled, they spoke in other tongues. Acts 19:6 revealed the same fact;

“And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.”

Even if we stop here, any sane mind will agree with me that speaking in tongues is the physical manifestation that follows the infilling of the Holy Spirit.

We have two records in the book of Acts where it was not explicitly stated the recipient of the infilling of the Holy Spirit spoke in new tongues. The first is in Acts 8:14-17 which reads;

“Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John: Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.” (Acts 8:14-17)

This passage did not state if they spoke in new tongues but someone saw physical evidence.
“And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money.” (Acts 8:18).

What did Simon see that made him offer money for the gift? There couldn’t have been any other manifestation than speaking in new tongues like in other instances.
To buttress my point let’s look at another instance that hands was laid on someone to receive the Holy Spirit and there was no record to proof that the person spoke in other tongues that moment but it was later revealed that the said person spoke in tongues.
“And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.” (Acts 9:17).

This person was Paul. There was no record to show that he spoke in other tongues that very moment but we all know that Apostle Paul claims he speaks in tongues more than everyone in his generation. When did he receive the gift? He did receive when hand was laid on him.

There is a verse that skeptics use to buttress their points that you can be filled with the Holy Spirit without necessarily speaking in tongues.
“And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost” (John 20:22)

This experience the disciples had in John 20:22 was not the infilling of the Holy Spirit. If it was, our Lord Jesus wouldn’t tell them to wait for the promise of the Holy Spirit just before his ascension. Why would you wait for something you already have? The preaching of the gospel must be done by the power of the Holy Spirit. There are people who will never believe the gospel until they see the demonstration of power. The gospel has the power to save, heal, prosper and deliver.

“For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.” (1 Corinthians 1:18)

Remember, “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and for ever.” (Hebrews 13:cool.

He is still in the business of healing and deliverance. He wants to do it through us. Let us arise and let the world know that Jesus Christ is alive and well. His ability is at work in us. We can do it through the power of his holy name.

“Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:9-11)

If the number of first timers that attend your Sunday service is not up to 5% of your membership strength, your church soul winning structure is weak. It should even be up to 10% of your membership strength.

Chapter 4 - The Message

The message to lost souls is the gospel of the kingdom of God and also the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They both go together. There is no king without a kingdom. And a kingdom that has no king is not a kingdom. So many have heard a gospel but not the gospel. The word gospel simply means good news. But it doesn’t look like good news the way some professing believers present it. We are commanded to preach the good news about God’s kingdom and about our Lord Jesus. It is not about our local church or about us.

And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.” (Matthew 24:14)

“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” (Mark 16:15)

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.” (Luke 4:18-19)

The content of our evangelical messages matters a lot. There is gross misconception of what the gospel is all about. Before we take a detailed look at what this good news is all about, we will highlight a few ways the gospel has been wrongly communicated.
The Gospel from The View Point of Those Who See God as Angry with The Sinners.
There are those who present the gospel with the perception that God is angry with the sinners and therefore urge all sinners to turn from their evil ways. The basis of their message is taken from scripture like; “God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.” (Psalms 7:11). This statement was true as at the time it was written but not in the time we are living in now. The blood that Jesus shed for us all on the cross of Calvary has met the demand of justice and pacified God’s anger. So, God is no longer counting men’s sin against them anymore.

“To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.” (2 Corinthians 5:19)

Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” (1 John 4:10)
The sin that God will use to judge the sinners is the sin of unbelief.

“And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on me.” (John 16:8-9)

The Gospel of Still Announcing the Coming of the Kingdom of God.

The gospel before the crucifixion of Jesus and after his resurrection is not the same. Before Christ crucifixion, the gospel was, ‘The Kingdom of God is at hand’. There are still a few religious groups who still preach the gospel of ‘Thy Kingdom Come’. This is ignorance on rampage. The Kingdom that Jesus was announcing has already come. It is no longer news.

“Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son.” (Colossians 1:13)
We are already in God’s Kingdom for those that have received Jesus as their Lord and personal Savior. The Kingdom of God however will be literally established on earth during the millennium reign of Christ on earth. While it tarries, professing believers can enjoy the dividends of been part of the Kingdom which includes, divine health, prosperity, protection and peace.

Those Who Present the Gospel from the View Point of Outward Adornment.

This perhaps is the most dangerous way of presenting the gospel. It is not even a gospel at all. Those who herald the gospel from this view point are quick to judge and condemn people based on what they put on. If you are dressed in a particular style, you must be a sinner. When your dress culture conforms to their concept of how they think a Christian should dress, then, you are a Saint. This is far from the truth.

I have heard a few bus evangelists asking women that put on trousers to repent otherwise God will judge them. What is the basis of their claim? They often refer to Deuteronomy 22:5 which reads;

“The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God.”
They conclude that trousers are men’s clothing and as such women putting them on are committing abomination. First, the scripture they base their argument on is one of the instructions out of over 600 instructions under the Law of Moses. The New Testament Church is not under the Law of Moses and such scripture cannot be used to judge the church.
“For sin shall not have dominion over you: FOR YE ARE NOT UNDER THE LAW, but under grace.” (Romans 6:14)

“But now WE ARE DELIVERED FROM THE LAW, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.” (Romans 7:6)
“FOR CHRIST IS THE END OF THE law for righteousness to every one that believeth.” (Romans 10:4)

“Knowing THAT A MAN IS NOT JUSTIFIED BY THE WORKS OF THE LAW, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.” (Galatians 2:16)

“CHRIST HATH REDEEMED US FROM THE CURSE OF THE LAW, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: (Galatians 3:13)

HAVING ABOLISHED IN HIS FLESH THE ENMITY, EVEN THE LAW OF COMMANDMENTS CONTAINED IN ORDINANCES; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; (Ephesians 2:15)

For there is verily A DISANNULLING OF THE COMMANDMENT GOING BEFORE for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof. (Hebrews 7:18)

There are many more scriptures that space will not permit us to include here that point to the fact that the Law of Moses has ended. For details on this subject, see my books; IS THE CHURCH UNDER THE LAW OF MOSES? & THE WOMAN QUESTION.

Besides the fact that the Law of Moses has ended, at the time the law was given, the dress culture of trouser has not been introduced. Men wore skirts as well as the women. What would you say then is Men’s clothing? I believe that the skirts of men were sewn differently from that of the women. In the same way, women have their kind of trousers and men theirs’ also.

What about men that tie wrapper in this part of the world? Why have we not called it an abomination?

What about the other laws that is over 600? The demand of the law was such that if you keep 599 out of 600, you are guilty of breaking all the laws talk less of just one law that religious folks have used to put the church in confusion and so many in bondage.
The same chapter contains instructions in verses 9 and 11 that those condemning others on trousers are also breaking. Verse 9 says they should not plant two different kinds of crops on the same farm land. Verse 11 says the Jews should not put on dress made of mixed fabrics. Virtually all the dresses we put on today are made of mixed fabrics. I urge all believers and ministers of the gospel to base their doctrine on the teachings of Jesus and the early Apostles. Jesus is the Chief corner stone of the New Testament Church. If we limit our doctrines to the teachings contained in the New Testament, most of the doctrinal controversies we are having today will be brought to a minimal level.
Apostle Paul said,

“Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life” (2 Corinthians 3:6).

He calls the Old Testament letter that kills. In another place, he placed a curse on anyone that preaches another gospel.

“But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.” (Galatians 1:8-9)

This is not to undermine the need to dress decently. Decency however is not a function of the style of dress you wear. There are women who tie wrapper with blouses that reveals their bodies. And I have seen women on trousers that are decently dressed. Indecent dressing is not limited to women alone. Some men also dress indecently. So, the watchword to this issue of dressing is modesty. You don’t have to put on trousers as a woman if you are not comfortable with it. But don’t condemn those who do for God has received them.

The Gospel Proclaimed According to Good Works

Specifically, there is a sect or a religious group that preaches the gospel according to good works. This is unscriptural. The Bible says;
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)

Good work only has a role to play after you are saved. You are expected to do good works after you are saved but your good works will not save you.

“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;” (Titus 3:5)

They tell their audience to stop all the bad things they are doing and come to Jehovah. How can a sinner stop committing sin? It is their nature so they can’t stop sinning. What they need is a miracle of re-birth that only Jesus can give. The bible says;

“But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.” (Isaiah 64:6).

If we could save ourselves by good works, Jesus would not have come.

The Gospel According to Church Sacraments.

There are so many that have been made to believe that they are saved because they have performed one sacrament or the other. Church sacrament such as water baptism does not save anyone. Your salvation is hinged on the finished work of Christ on Calvary.

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” (Romans 10:9-10)

Church sacraments are religious practices that makes people feel good but do not add any virtue to their lives not help them conquer the power of sin.

The Gospel According to Church Membership
There are quite a few people that make people feel that as soon as they join their church, they are saved. You are not a Christian because you join a church in the same way that you are not an animal just because you visited a zoo. The Bible says;

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)

Notice, it didn’t say, if any man be in Church. You can be a member of a church and yet not in Christ. Some churches even give
membership card to their members. You could be a member of your local church but not included in the universal church written in heaven.
What then is the gospel of our Lord Jesus? It is the good news of his death, burial and resurrection.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” (1 Peter 1:3)

The gospel can also be described as the revelation of the righteousness of God.

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.” (Romans 1:16-17)


Mankind could not live right before God. Jesus took our sins and in exchange gave us his righteousness which is obtained by faith.

“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” (2 Corinthians 5:21)

The good news is that God is no longer angry with us. Our sins have been forgiven and sinners can be reconciled back to God. There is liberty for mankind now. We now have access to God through the blood of Jesus.
The good news is that the dead and resurrection of Jesus has made it possible for us to be partaker of his divine nature devoid of sickness and afflictions. The gospel is all about Jesus and what he did for us on the cross of Calvary.

The substitutionary work of Christ on Calvary can be summarized thus;
1. He became sin to make us righteous. 2nd Corinthians 5:21.
2. He was made poor to make us rich. 2nd Corinthians 8:9.
3. He was made sick to make us whole.1st Peter 2:24.
4. He well to hell to take us to heaven. Acts 2:27.
5. He suffered shame to give us glory. Matthew 27:29.
6. He was forsaken by God’s so we can be accepted by Him. Matthew 27:46.
7. He became the son of man so we can become the sons of God. Matthew 11:19.
8. He was made weak to make us strong. Matthew 8:17.
9. He was condemned to justify us. Luke 24:20.
10. He was chastised to give us peace. Isaiah 53:5.
11. He died that we might have life and have it more abundantly – John 10:10.
And lots more

The gospel is not about your church or a special man of God. It is all about Jesus. Evangelical messages are centered on Jesus.

“And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and PREACH JESUS CHRIST.” (Acts 5:42).

“Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, AND PREACHED CHRIST UNTO THEM.” (Acts 8:5).

“Preaching the kingdom of God, and TEACHING THOSE THINGS WHICH CONCERN THE LORD JESUS CHRIST, with all confidence, no man forbidding him.” (Acts 28:31).

Having preached, you must give your audience the opportunity to receive Christ into their life. It is not a prayer you pray for everyone. It is only those who indicate interest either by raising their hands or by verbal response that you initiate into the body of Christ.
The prayer should be based on Romans 10:9-10 which reads;

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” (Romans 10:9-10).

The prayer should look like this; Father, I thank you for sending your Son to die for me on the cross of Calvary. I believe you raised him up on the third day for me. I receive the forgiveness of sins and confess him as my Lord and Personal Saviour from this day henceforth. Thank you for I believe according to your word that I am saved. I am born again.

You don’t have to tell them to start confessing all their sins. They have been forgiven. Besides, how many can they remember? As the scripture says;

“To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, NOT IMPUTING THEIR TRESPASSES UNTO THEM; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.” (2 Corinthians 5:19).

“And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, HAVING FORGIVEN YOU ALL TRESPASSES.” (Colossians 2:13).

The only people that need to confess actual sins when they fall into errors are the believers.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9).
