Must you guys pass all your rubbish thoughts through nairaland before making your inconsequential decisions?

Is it daftness or you just want to be popular in a faceless forum?

It's understandable that you couldn't afford #3.5m as an undergraduate.

I would rather you put your money in a fixed account, since your plan is to leave the country. If you buy a car for about #4m now, it would have depreciated to about #1.5m by the time you’re ready to leave. And going into a Business without prior knowledge of it in this country is very risky.

Thank you very much.

1.Actually,I work and earn by myself.I don't dress like yahoo boys and I have this cool gentle look because I am indeed gentle grin
2.I don't drink to stupor. If I drink, I'll be wise enough not to drive.
3.No I don't show off.I need it for easy mobility.
I'm tired of bus conductors shouting "four four per row" in a heated bus filled with people who smell nice and those who don't.I like comfort.

Good to go.

Yes, I was trained through school on N7k monthly allowance back in 2004-2008.

You better swallow your pride because there is nothing you have done or will do that hasn't been done by others before you.

Too much unnecessary info
So you have to tell us you're in a private uni
Your level(why not add the course of study name of school)
Leaving the country
And also the prize of the car(why not add the model and name)

You should equally add age so will be ascertain if police will harrass you or not.

How will I get effective answers if I don't give details?
Would you suggest I ask a rather vague question like "Is buying a car worth it?"
Tell me how I should have asked.

Nigeria's hardship is really making people bitter.Out of all your envy and jealousy, you still didn't give me advice that I seek.

The police part is what I want to respond to; my bro, as long as you're responsible in your appearance, no unnecessary youthful behaviour, and you carry yourself with decorum, then you've gat no problems.
One even asked what I do for a living, and I told him I'm a civil servant which I am.
Funny enough, I enjoy meeting policemen on the way. I greet them respectfully, hail them at times, then move. I know a lot of them now.
Be sincere, be free.
Thanks.

It just seems like every young man who owns a car is a fraudster to them.

As a student you dont need a car for anything just face your study and the money for the can invest it in any way it will be safe like bank short term investment or any other business that will not give you any distraction from your study , Car in Nigeria is not easy to use and maintain police , mechanic and others , use marwa and transport and okada if necessary you dont have time to do any meeting in the traffic hold up etc
elderly advice use it or throw it away

No bro. It is not worth it. Rather use the money to prepare for your Diaspora experience and settling down.

Convert your money to GBP and save it....if possible, where you are sure it can yield safe interest in GBP.

Coz either you like it or not, Pounds will still reach like N1000 by the time Bubu is gone and done with Nigeria...so your money won't lose value.

Take care.

2braithe:

If I have no intention to leave the country yet, I'll buy it straight away.

All I'm asking is "is buying a car for just a 3 year duration worth it?".
In 2 years time like you said, I'll only have 1 year more in Nigeria and it won't be worth it.

A car is suppose to aid mobility and generally make your life easier. Some people like suffer and trekking, if you’re in that group, a car will look like luxury to you .

So trekking now amount suffering. Nigerians and their warped thinking.

Go to New York City and see loads of car owners who would rather trek combined with public transport going to work everyday.

Why do you think a lot of tokunbo vehicles are always very neat when brought here?

Necessity, they say,is the mother of INVENTION! Car was invented for the sole reason of SAVING TIME!, follow by convenience, and comfort and lastly, for luxury (which isn't that important) I no fit type abeg. undecided graduate my arss ,no brainier lot.

Just put the money into cryptocurrency or land properties or better still start a business that won't hinder your academics. The earlier you embrace the concept of business and sole proprietorship the better.
Japa might not be that easy the way you perceive it come next three years o. I bought a car while in school 2011 and can tell you it was fun but the reality is, I am still using the same car now. See ehn just calm down, research and source for valuable businesses you can do while in school. That money is meant to make you life easier come after school. Don't waste it

And if you are still confused, buy yourself a good iPhone to show small luxury, start a small POS business to be bringing in small change for upkeep and fixed the rest of that money for that proposed 3years. Continue your life like you nor fix anything.

Epic failed attempt at sarcasm.

I don't think the guy (golor) was being sarcastic.
The point he's making is, if you buy a used car today (especially Nigerian used), that same car might still be worth the same or more in 3 years time, rather than depreciate in value, due to uncontrollable inflation.

Based on experience, I also think he's right

If your moni don finish you no go talk....which one be say "car na luxury".

300L student? Get a toks corolla with no added frills or pimping.
Budget 20k monthly for fuel costs depending on how far your daily commute is.
Budget 200k/year for the first 2 years for repairs (be sure to do comprehensive insurance as well).
Be disciplined with the car. No excesses, at times leave the car back home for really unnecessary trips.
Register with Uber, Bolt etc. (Half a weekend's work can get you a weeks worth of fuel to use if you know what I mean).
Make sure your papers are always up to date. Don't ever "borrow" friends the car for whatever reason.

It isn't a luxury unless you treat it as such. Being disciplined with using the car will definitely improve your quality of life and the opportunities within your reach in the long run. I can get into my car at 5:30 am in Lagos, be in Ibadan by 8:00 am and back in Lagos by 12:30 pm having achieved my aim in relative comfort without my neighbors having inkling as to what has transpired.

Detailed response. Thanks so much for this.

you're not bouyant enough. You enter bus, and then you want to buy a car. Before I bought my first car, I paid a personal Keke driver 35k every month for 4 months, do you know the last time I entered bus. That's was when I knew I needed a car, because I can afford to fuel my tanks with 10 k three good times in a month. and save myself the remaining 5k and collect AC and comfort. If you don't have upto 5milluon in your account or you job gives you not less than 500k a month, then you don't need a car.

I will only advice you to get those camrybig yansh or buy corolla. You can't maintain luxury now

I'm very frugal with spending.Since I am single with no family burden,I ensure I save over half of my income (my parents handle school fees).
This is why I still enter bus inter-state and Uber intra-state.

I think I'll stick to my Uber ordering. When I travel out,I can get a car.
Thanks for your input.

Yes as long as you understand that it is not an investment. That's why I am yet to comprehend why people of sane minds spend tens of millions of naira on a metal that will depreciate in value over time.
lol. If you can comfortably afford it, no can use too expensive

There are several.factors to consider if it is worth buying a car..... factors that we do not know.... that only you know. Should a lady going somewhere ask what she should wear.... can you advise her without knowing the occasion? Buy a gown... just above the ankles... only to find out later she was going to a pool party. Same thing. How far do you live from school?... is it that difficult to in getting transportation to and from?... do you over around a lot that require you to be using taxi/bus? .... do you be hauling loads often? .... do you have to be dropping off and picking up siblings?... or will having a car make it easier for them to get to school and wherever?.... is your neighbourhood a safe one?... are they often be stealing cars?... or parts? ... do Police be setting up extortion points? .... would you be using the car for private use only?.... or intend to use it as a taxi? ..... what about the condition of roads in your area?... are you in Aba? .....these are some of the factors that need to be considered and we know none of these. Why would you then expect us to advise you?

Lol
Okay I don't need a car within my school premises as I live inside school.

I need it mainly during school breaks to move back home(interstate),attend occasions,visiting,travel....just mobility basically.I'm tired of public transport.

The rest of the questions are overwhelming to answer grin

Thanks for stopping by.

Money making abroad ain't as hard as in Nigeria..
