Then prove me wrong. Show me a forum created by anyone here that did not use CMS. I know what I am talking about. This statement is akin to saying that NO ONE on nairaland has the expertise to write an Operating System or a Compiler, which is a fact. There are only a few people in the world who can! The level of expertise one needs to undertake such a feat(creating a scalable forum from scratch) is very high and few people in the world possess it. A lot of people's egos were hurt by this fact, but it is the truth. All folks can do is talk, but if we ask for proof, they show us nothing. More importantly, if you know anyone with such skills, please let me know. I'd love to be proved wrong!

if we dont try it now how can we get it. most of the inventions in the world all start we an idea. yes just an IDEA.
and when we wait to get all the knowledge of world b4 we can start. that will be the craziest thing that can't be realized.

Fayimora:

Please what is this CMS thingy yall talking about?
Content Management Systems.

e.g Wordpress, Drupal, Joomla, Wiki's.
Easy website creation, without core coding it.

Well, you are right. Most devs here choke on cms. I dont know, I prefer core-coding

Hmmm all those stuff are for people who know HTML and maybe a lil bit of css and not actually programmers, lol but seriously wats the point of calling a site urs when you cant even code  it. I probably would leave wordpress outta it. For instance an currently developing a site built into wordpress cheesy,  Yeah am taking advantage of their admin console so I dnt have to create my own dashboard like i always do.

And finally, when exactly are we going to face other things apart from always talking about NL? No-one ever gets tired innit?
Re: Creating A New Face For Nl by kodewrita(m): 1:35pm On Jul 22, 2011
Just to clarify that anybody can build a CMS otherwise there wont be so many startups online making money from selling their hosted CMS applications. But very few can create CMS applications that are as good and as feature-filled as Drupal, Mambo, Joomla and the others.

Even you omo_to_dun can create a crappy CMS.

Its building a proper one that is the issue.

unfortunately, most of us are not motivated enough to do it.

Rest assured that if someone walked into a building housing NL developers and offered 1mil(Zimbabwean, Russian and Other crappy currencies excluded) to have a CMS developed, he would be testing prototypes before he steps out of that building.
Re: Creating A New Face For Nl by kodewrita(m): 1:36pm On Jul 22, 2011
Frankly i would much rather build a dating site than a Forum. instant traffic from all you H.o,r,n.y people.

@Fayimora u're mistakenly something anytime i mention CMS i don't mean managing a site,am refering to building templates, creating modules, plugins, widgets and stuff, the people who use CMS to manage websites don't call themselves programmers, but building a dynamic Joomla templates even requires more advcaned knowledge of the programming language, like for instance creating a Joomla Component will require you to know your OOP or MVC well and also how to handle request and route that request to load certain components and as for the Wordpress building themes with wordpress is not a walk in the park,as if you are not familiar with Array Processing it will be hard extracting data from the "Wordpress's Loop"

Re: Creating A New Face For Nl by Fayimora(m): 11:11pm On Jul 22, 2011
Hmmm yeah am not too conversant with the CMS or joomla thingy, I normally write ma code from scratch.
Re: Creating A New Face For Nl by kodewrita(m): 11:11am On Jul 23, 2011
Dude, I agree about perfection through years but realise that joomla, drupal and the rest though they started as one-man projects are not currently the products of one man but the result of relentless perfection by a community of committed programmers.

Ask Precurio, those Babcock guys who created an opensource intranet application. They built it and made it available to the world and over 3 or more years of advice from users and interested programmers, it has grown to a world class application.

It doesnt have to be perfect on the first try. All things properly managed get better with age.

Shooting yourself in the foot because you are not a genius programmer prevents you from ever aiming at anything great.

@ Kodewrita

I respectfully disagree. No amount of money can give you skills that you do not possess. These skills are painstakingly honed and perfected through a period of many years. That's akin to saying I can beat Mike Tyson if someone gives me a billion dollars. Would you fight him if you were given that amount of money and risk death?

i disagree with you in one instance, some of the reasons why nigeria developers dont do or concentrate on jobs like creating the likes of joomla or wordpress is that they lack sponsorship and most of the developers and not the product of the universities in Nigeria but a product of self dedication.

I created Blogshop for fun - basic Rails really. It's a free hosting service so the first time you reach the site you may encounter a 404 saying "We are sorry but something went wrong"; just refresh. That, my friends, is a blog/CMS. The rest - Jooma, Wordpress, Drupal, Redmine, Radiant and even gpEasy (to name the ones that do not need a database backup) - give you are just minor details that are flavoured to the companies ego. These can be implemented in no time.

I also designed and created Tick Tack Tohh. Game logic from ground up. This was because of boredom on a holiday night. Took me two hours. The site that Tick Tack Tohh is hosted in is the Webspace given to us by the university and they are strongly against server-side scripting else I would have put up more. In the Lab section of the site, I learn QT and made a .diff app I named Gold.

I have made multiple servers in C that can run off a USB. Those I cannot link to on the site cos dem bin pay me to shut up. I am currently working on another of them "no yan anytin" projects - a minor one; 8 models, 20 to 23 associations. The only thing I can say is one of the models I had to implement is a forum. I just finished the integration test last night.

So man, no fall 9ja hand. Peeps dey wey fit sneeze, CMS go manifest!

God bless @fayimora for trailblazing

Fayimora:

And nowadays too, CMSes are old school. Webapps are the way to go. We should be thinking on how to make this site a living breathing Nigerian web entity instead of arguing on what we can and cannot do - whatever happened to "learning" only palm wine and my fore fathers fi yan us.

@all and @every,
Read up on Gamification. It should give you ideas. Now vomit those ideas on forums and watch how the skill set will emerge from nowhere.

Welcome to NL. I love your enthusiasm; it'll be highly needed for future projects. By the way, the links you posted are not working.

Updated:
Oops, I am very sorry; the links are now working. The problem was my browser.

Yeah, I think I stated that that was me following a tutorial. Clearly you can see that I quickly got bored of it. Most of my projects nowadays I can't share or take credit for them either because I wasn't the project lead or cos of legalities.
Re: Creating A New Face For Nl by Eniga(m): 2:43pm On Aug 17, 2011
its possible to create a forum from scratch, just that most people are lazy in doing so. i succeeded in creating a php forum from scratch and adapted it to a module for my school project. if people are really interested we could just team up to have this designed.

I created Nairalive, no cms, no pluggin whatsoever and have been working on it ever since Feb. 2010.
Currently there are close to 5000 registered members and an average of 1000 unique visitors daily.
The link is on my signature.

Very very interesting. This thread has in fact pointed out to the weakness of many developers here on nairaland.

But @op, i do not actually believe your statement covers for everyone. Actually, i know some nairalanders (rather
quiet ones that have actually done some of these stuffs - but they are not based in Naija - and they dont come here
to beat their chests like many people here do).

Anyway, i will not say much at this time, but some of my ongoing projects will prove you wrong very soon.
But for now, i will rather keep quiet and keep coding.

But i should quickly mention that - many developers that use cms (me inclusive) - just do so to save time. I can cover
loads of grounds that way.

Using frameworks and cmses have their pros and cons. However, if you wish to code from the scratch, you have to do
it excellently.
