This is an easy way to prevent food shortage in this country. |

This will have limited growth I believe, the tuber sizes will be hindered I assume But the harvest will be so easy as peeling a lollipop wrapper 1 Like |

I guess it will aid easy harvest but the dangers involved will be poor yield and probably bad taste of the yam. |

Raph82: So you think a whole yam is like waterleaf that you can plant in a sack. Do you know that yam is a deep rooted crop? Or you think he's talking about sweet potato? Have you even been to a yam farm and see how the roots spread? Now, he will have to confine the roots to just a bag of cement. Ok, check how the yam is growing, compare it to the normal growth of yam. That yam can never bear good yield. Let’s just wait till he updates us when he harvest. I know you have never been to a farm before |

kenny714433:Smiles, don't worry, I've never been to the farm before, but I did not study Agriculture on paper, we are all in this together, to really prove your point, you can plant in a sac and plant on the ground, give the same plants equal treatment, make sure you plant on the same type of soil, top soil. Then compare the result at the end of the day. You waiting for the OP's result may not cut it, and it won't be fair to conclude before starting an experiment. 4 Likes |

There are many factors that can cause stunted tubers at harvest, if all conditions are perfectly met, you'll be amazed with the result. Mind you, with the roots, yam has a wonderful root system that finds its way into the soil, senses where the nutrient is and moves to the direction. We've seen roots finding its way amidst rocky soil, that's root for you. 4 Likes |

Raph82:Very correct analysis. We also have a garden of veggies, okro and ewedu (the leaf used to make the Yoruba signature soup), pepper (different types) and one or more plants in our paved compound. We have been enjoying these things. Our neighbours also did the same (even planted yam, potatoes, water melon, cucumber and pawpaw) in both sack bags and car tires filled with soil and manure. |

Started this little experiment in 2017. We have followed up thereafter. See our current planting and some of last year harvest. 2 Likes

Raph82: Good reply. Added to that, in my own opinion, the sacks represent/replace the heaps/ridges usually make on the farmland required to make the plants (especially root crops) do better. |

micellgevity: So you transplant them or they remain in the bags till maturity? |

Yea I believe that's the only advantage of this method. Harvesting yam na hard labour on it own tonididdy: |
Re: My Yam Farm In Cement Bags (Pictures) by kenny714433(m): 12:25pm On Apr 20, 2022 |
Raph82: Smiles... Its ok then. I don't know what species of yam you might think of, or the species the op must have planted. If its the Abakiliki species that I do plant, some of the harvest are way longer than a bag of cement, and very fat in breadth. So imagine confining that to a bag of cement, you have certainly killed your harvest. In addition, the growth is not what one can think of in a bag of cement. We use strong and longer bamboo to stake them. Even at that, most of them still break the stake when there's wind. I think those from Benue, Nasarawa etc can give you a better picture of planting in a bag and in a soil. |

kenny714433:I think I'll love to work with that variety of yam, I am looking at a small scale, like 20 stands of them in a giant sac (50 kg sac). This is not a commercial scale thing, just small scale at the backyard, just to see how it will fair. This variety of yam you're talking about is not common in the southwest. |

i will try this out here. even as a Benue farmer, I stand a good chance to compare and contrast at the end. But why do you half filled the sack ,why not fill it to the bream to give it a deeper space? |
