Gambling Is Not A Sin by kosoro: 8:05pm On Jul 08, 2011
I recently told a friend of mine i was going to buy a lottery ticket and was surprised to hear him say that it was a sin - that gambling generally is a sin according to the bible. How is it a sin? Where is this in the bible or quo-ran? Gambling involves at least two people willfully participating in an activity under mutually agreed terms for certain benefits. As long as they are not breaking the law, it is not a sin. Some may reason that because gambling could be addictive, that's why it's a sin. That doesn't make it a sin. How about all other stuff that are addictive? After all, life itself is a gamble.

What do you think?

Yes. Success is a weighted function of luck and hardwork. I believe there's no success without an element of luck. That's why the same trade Mr A has been doing for years without much to show for it other than sweat, Mr B could make it big in a short time with less stress. You can call it God's favor if you like.

Well for me, I think it’s a sin because gambling makes you hang out with unbelievers; and worldly desires. And your constant exposure to this things can lead you to sin.

Take a look at this passage.

Matthew 21 verse 12-13

12And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves,

13And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.

How does going to the store to buy a lottery ticket amount to hanging out with unbelievers? Besides, how many co-workers of yours are believers or if you have your own business, do you ask your clients for their religious persuasion first before you do business with them? Gambling is strictly business. People participate in it, abiding by set rules and everyone has equal chance of winning. Remember, it's totally voluntary.

Jesus did that because those people turned the temple to a business center. But how does this passage, often quoted by people who think gambling is a sin, even make gambling a sin? Remember, Jesus "cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, ", does this make "buying and selling" a sin too?
