Reminds me of my daughter in Primary Three in a university private school. The new Math teacher believed that caning was the best way to get the subject matter into the children's heads.

I ached for my child as I took her through her homework because I could sense her fear about being caned the next day.

I was also worried that she would develop a phobia for Math.

Happily, we had to relocate and in the new environment, she was able to thrive. Math is her best subject today.

I'm not against caning because I am from the generation that grew up with caning at home, and in school when your crimes had exceeded detentions. Abuse via caning is what I disapprove of.

In this child's case, I wonder if he had an underlying condition that the caning triggered.

I am in my early 30”s. If it were not the discipline structure of my parents- Uncles and Aunts, I would have turned out a child without direction.

What we have these days are just half baked kids with no moral compass of what is good or wrong. They can engage in anything without giving a second thought or so. It is a shame parents of nowadays contributed to this ill of their child’s terrible behavioral imbalance!

There are also several others who weren't caned but still turned out very disciplined. We should encourage discipline and not punishment. A child should learn some lessons while being disciplined.

Thank you my brother, I'm a teacher by profession and it's so terrible to link the death of that boy to the beating the class receives. It's sad we live in a world where Indiscipline rule our society, imagine so many comments on nairaland about teachers as if we too didn't passed through the same school. While I don't like teachers flogging their students for anything, you can't conclude it was because of the beating the boy died. It may be something else entirely and the beating just happened to be a coincidence of some sort...

In a school I worked last year, the proprietress specifically told the students that no teacher was allowed to use cane or any other form of punishment on them as a result of these the students became "over spoilt" to the extent of them placing a bet to see who could fumble a female teacher's breast in class and they did it. So tell me why you send kids to school if not to get disciplined and educated

I'm a Christian as well as a teacher and I have passion for the work and also the best in what I do. I once teach in a private school that made such rule, I can tell you I called the proprietress in a one on one meeting, I can't spare the rod, I can't allow spoil children to take over my class and I can't fail God but I'll give an account to him. You won't believe I was given the permission to caned with special caution though.

I remember my primary school in Ikeja. I hated it because the beating was too much. The teachers were Ghanaians and it as though they took their frustrations on us.

In my first secondary school which was in a cantonment, I hated it for the same reason.

It was only when I attended a private school in Ibadan that I found some peace. They rarely flogged. I doubt I was flogged more than 5 times during my 5 years stay. Yet, I finished with 5 A's and 2 C's for both GCE and WAEC. I only submitted one of my results for admission into uni.
