With about 72 hours to the time limit the Federal Government gave the Prof. Nimi Briggs Committee to conclude negotiation with the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, there are indications that the union may make some concessions in its demands from the government.

Checks by Vanguard, yesterday, showed that this followed the progress being made in the meetings between the committee and the leadership of the union.

Though the concessions may not include overlooking the demands that have financial implications, the union could give more time to the government to meet some demands.
A source told our correspondent that both parties still met on Saturday, as the deadline given the Briggs Committee to conclude its assignment would lapse mid week.

He said: “Demands that have financial implications such as the payment of Earned Academic Allowance, Revitalisation Fund, the payment of withheld salaries are not negotiable. There are some areas we may shift grounds but until it is officially done, let us wait.

“Our children and wards are affected too by the strike. How much do we earn to send them abroad or to private universities here?

“We are not insensitive to the welfare of our students and the anxiety of parents. It is the government that is not getting its priorities right. Education is a vital sector that should not be left to rot,”he said.

When contacted, the National President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, said the two parties had been meeting as scheduled.

“All I can say is that we are meeting and we are discussing and progress is being made. Whatever we arrive at we will make public. Whether their team has a time limit to do its job does not concern us. As a union, we are always ready to negotiate whenever they are ready too,” he said.

ASUU has been a curse to this country.
Now its time for negotiations and its their salary and wages that are top of the list.
Later they will lie to the students that this fight is for them.

There are matters that you would expect a presidential aspirant to be focused on on. Tinubu whose educational record is strongly contested and marred by fraud and his strong ability to traffic drugs for decades while he buys his way out of the wrath of the law has no sense of the impact that education imposes on innocent Nigerians.

Dangote has no conscience. There are millions of jobless Nigerians dying of hunger and begging for jobs below 20k per month. Some importuning to survive just because of the sheer hardship and privation in town. Dangote preferred to go to India to get workers to build his refinery. That project should have provided so many jobs for Nigerians but only a few are employed there.

Nigerian manufacturers believe the Indians so much and hand over managerial jurisdiction to these people at the expense of their compatriots. These Indians will never hire Nigerians in their country. They get privileges here and rather hire their fellow Indians than work with Nigerians. They dislike Nigerians and at any slight mistake, they display their disdain for Africans.

Imagine the thousands of Indians living and working in Nigeria while Nigerians are jobless. It is a fact to say that it is a private project, but truth be told this is a project dependent on Nigerian resources from the Niger Delta. There is a moral debt that he owes Nigerians. Nigerians are highly valued outside the country for their exceptional brilliance in various fields.

Why can't Dangote give us the opportunities? Majority of those Indians are ill-qualified. They forge certificates like no other country in the world. Majority of them come here representing professionals with fake educational certificates and experience. The Nigerian is duly scrutinized in every organization while others are working and gaining experience using fake documents.

And, they are highly paid. It is sad that Nigerians hush Nigerians up for speaking out and at the end of the day we stay in this penury and destitution.

We do not need another sick president. We are tired of having ghost cabals run our country. Let us have a diplomat who can liaise with corporations and conglomerates to create jobs and develop the country.

#avoidTinubu.

If Osinbajo emerged as APC Presidential candidate,, He will win Atiku and Peter Obi.

But if any other candidates emerged,, Atiku of PDP will win the election.

Nigerian students should be hopeful of next government not this one.

Cabals don't care about what they won't gain anything from.

ASUU has been an association filled with corrupt and selfish people....

The government understand this about them hence the lingering strike action....

What happened to the part funds given to ASUU in the years before now I guess they shared it ..

It is all clear now that this ASUU ain't fighting for the interest of the students....they always compare themselves with lawmakers who earn in millions....shior undecided undecided

If ASUU strike is really for the interest of the students, why is UI, OAU, UNN joining the action?? These schools are top in the country with everything..

Again, why are private institutions lecturers okay with their systems

Resign from the classroom and go into politics then..

END ASUU IN EVERY NIGERIAN UNIVERSITY

And what is wrong in asking for an increase in salary that has been paid on a 2009 salary scale. After 13 years in the same scale. This is the first time they are asking for salary increment. Every of their other fights have been for the students.

Please don't quote that person to start explaining to him/her, they will never learn. You even have time to school him

There is a law that prohibits anyone who did not serve NYSC from being employed by Govt or work in public service.
Until a similar law is enacted for people who did not, or their kids did not attend our Govt universities, these incessant ASUU strikes will never end.
