Their pension is better to spend outside of the Diaspora.

Their pension will last longer here than in the abroad. If they have serious health issues, they can go back to sort it our.

Best of both worlds.

Like if the retiree has a heart attack, stroke or some other kind of immediate life threatening emergency? Mmmmmh. Okay o!

In the disappear, nobody has time for any old man or woman... You either accept to be shipped to an old people's home or agree to a life in solitude and this you cannot manage...... Here in Nigeria, people still want to help and assist you especially when you're old but is not so in most western countries cool cool cool cool cool

How about the children of the old people?

Your relatives? let them grow old first and see them say otherwise. You won't understand wot a lonely life at old age means over there, just indoor with birds making noise over your your roof and possibly a nanny coming to collect her pay every damn time.

One aunt is over 80,a retired nurse with all her kids as medical professionals and living in cally. Her husband passed three years ago. She is living her best life.

I have been thinking why the few peeps I know including some of my distant uncles who spent most of their years abroad came back to Nigeria to live when they became old. Is there something awkward about growing old overseas?

Even my sister in the US, has been telling me that once she gets old, she will come back to Nigeria to spend the remainder of her life. Folks abroad, what's really going on? Is there a harsh reality for the aged over there?
because coming home is the only option they've no use their again, they're useless while we in Africa we value our forefathers not even our grandparents we always respect as God's. But we go soon begin reject them sha.

The real reason why diaspora wants to return home after retirement are:
1. Upon your retirement, your pension is not enough to pay your bills but it will make you live a manageable life In NAIJa.

2. You want to spend more time with your friends and family for the reminder of your life, most will still travel back and forth.

3. If you are lucky, your children will come with you but chances are they will not and you are alone.

4. If you have have a house and a 401k or 403, you can sell your home and distribute the funds to your children and enjoy the rest.

But the primary reason is reason #1, all has to be planned or you suffer in NAIJA. $1,000 a month pension can not pay your rent abroad talk about other bills but can make your stay comfortably in NAIJA.

When they are young, diaspora is their favourite. When they get old and begin to pay the price of the enjoyment they had, they will remember "No place like home". If you think they are coming home just because they love home, why did they wait until old age? Are they running from enjoyment in diaspora?

Suffering is not only about the struggle to make money. Whatever threatens your health or saddens you means suffering.

U hv no idea what u're talking about . Made up story. What type of suffering are old people in diaspora encounter?
The simple answer why they come back home is cos of loneliness. When ur kids are grown they leave home to build careers & they move from state to state till they marry & start their own families. These countries aren't structured like Nigeria where families tend to live close by or sometimes live in same family house where grandparents takes care of the young ones & they in turn are taken care of at twilight of their lives.

CSTRR:

What do you expect them to do.?

The vast majority of Nigeria is stupid.

Look at the 2023 elections about to come, sensible people are asking Nigerians to vote Peter obi because development starts with leadership.

Instead, we are seeing people determined to vote Tinubu or atiku even when they know nothing good can come out of it.
They know it but bigotry, greed and laziness to struggle for a great nation is the problem.
Millions of people determined to do the wrong thing.

So what do you do?
The vast majority are stupid already.

There is really nothing you can do.

The best is to Japa and go to countries where people like you are.

The mistake Nigerians make when they think of japa is to go ti white man land forgetting africa is the treasure.... Europe had always had their eyes on Africa to this day.... if there is a way for them to unseat you to Europe and they come here, they will do it.....they did it in Zimbabwe they did it in South africa....

My point is if u want to jappa try kenya. Why must it be Canada And usa Me I dey find fine african country not dome stupid western European country.....

Maybe its those ones that didn't plan for their old age when they were young, they didn't buy a house or save etc, cos most that planned their life don't want to come back and stay in nigeria, maybe come home more often than before but not stay permanently.

You're still in Nigeria; when you travel, you will know better

If you set up yourself well in a foreign country, there is absolutely no reason to return to Nigeria when you’re old.
Reasons:
. Everyone sees you as their personal ATM
. You really don’t know the system or the people
. All the things (medication and reliable/ reasonable medical system) that you need to keep yourself going healthy and stronger are mostly not available in Nigeria.
. You are not used to unreliable power supply, poor water supply and severe poor infrastructure, therefore you may get frustrated with time.
. And finally, you may end up getting kidnapped.

My advise for old folks, stick to what you know/ stick to where you have a peace of mind; there is no place on this planet that you can’t be blessed by God.

We have health insurance in Nigeria. Axa Mansard Gold Plan is not up to 200k in a year, and it gives you access to good hospitals. I don't know about other parts of Nigeria but AXA is popular in port-harcourt. Healthcare is not a problem in my opinion.

Home is home and most people want to be buried in their home. Come over and hustle at your prime age when you are old you need to enjoy your sweat with your family here because of the social life at home. Here you may not talk to your neighbour in the same apartment for years. For Naija you know now. For our young men and young couple pls come and hustle it is better here for you and the future of your children or unborn children except God save Naija from these wicked politicians

However, get your pvc and vote oooooo for the right person pls
Re: Why Do People In The Diaspora Come Back To Nigeria To Settle When They Get Old? by TheGift: 10:02am On Jun 21, 2022
Just say you never got insurance in Nigeria, because I know people who have gotten their cars replaced based on insurance. Many years ago, A friend of Mine crashed two Honda I-V Tecs within a space of six months . They were both replaced. Same model, same year, same color. He used three of them.

My wife just got back from the Hospital consultation drugs everything all on insurance , so i don’t know what you are talking about.

Even without insurance health care here is still way cheaper than over there, with their insurance.

But I don’t expect you to see anything good about Nigeria, you have already been brainwashed to use terms like “first world” and “third world” which was coined by your colonial masters to keep us in perpetual subservience and a state of inferiority complex.

I wish you all the best in America, where black lives are still begging to matter.

Don’t mind them. Even apart from Axa, there is reliance HMO that has broken down insurance into manageable fee structures like quarterly payments and you can even roll over some of your unused premiums. Even My staff and house help are on their Plan.

But Some people will condemn things without evidence or experience, because they are already biased towards thinking nothing good can come out of Nigeria.

Two things:
First, I am glad you said it is the "few people you know". That is not statistically significant to make the assertion that people go home to Naija at old age. Second, you need to make a very clear distinction between the past and the present.

We do not leave Nigeria voluntarily to go live in other countries. We value and cherish the camaraderie, the joyful back slapping with friends, the ability to go visit a friend or next door neighbour without an appointment and the ability of the average Nigerian to come to the aid of his fellow man without prompting. These are the things we miss when we are forced out of Nigeria due to economic or other pressures. Therefore during old age, these are the things some people want to come back to experience before the end.

But the reality is that Nigeria has changed significantly over the last twenty years. Maybe it was in our parent's generation that some wanted to come home at old age and relieve the good old camaraderie life in Nigeria. Today's Nigeria is a country of criminals at all levels and jealous, murderous relatives and friends. The camaraderie and joyfulness of the 40's to the 90's has disappeared, replaced with envy, back stabbing and the worship of money. Almost every Nigerian is willing to commit a crime in order to be seen as well off, even when there is no hunger in the person. It is probably by far, the most dangerous country on earth today.

You have to be certifiably crazy to want to go home to Nigeria in your old age. I won't even bother to recite the several minor and major things that will happen to you within weeks of your arrival, including the possibility of imminent death. It is a fool who will dare do that in today's Nigeria.

Nigeria will get so much more worse. There is no end in sight. The leadership is not the problem. Every Nigerian is the problem of that country. Starting from the lack of ability to reason or think logically (despite attaining first and second degrees) even in daily conversations, to the inability to see each other as one and the same people suffering under the hands of the few, to the inability to proffer an alternative view point without quickly resorting to insults, to the inability to be satisfied with one's daily bread and curb the megalomaniac need to be seen as doing better than others, etc, etc. There is no end in sight.

Even animals get to a point where they say "enough is enough". A group of men will confront a lion or tiger or cheetah. The animal's first instinct is to run away because of the large number of humans. But after a while, the animal gets tired of running, turns around and confronts its pursuers. It knows it is about to die. But it will rather die than continue to be debased. The Nigerian? He rolls over for his corrupt master even when he is being killed on a daily basis. Mtchew!

Forty years from now, I will still be here minding my business. Go to Nigeria ko, go to Nigeria ni.

Really? Granted there's always unforeseen circumstances but most middle class workers in the USA who take BASIC steps to plan their retirement can maintain a good lifestyle on Social Security.

I know and have experienced enough about Nigeria AND the USA. All considered, the USA is a better place for retirement. It takes a little bit of planning though....just a little bit, nothing major. That includes living a healthy life, there's large scale, long duration studies that show the kind of lifestyle choices that are most likely to keep one living a reasonably independent life even at 80, 90 years old.

Many rich people in their 50s are now leaving Nigeria to live in the USA. From what I see it seems they started putting things in place 10 to 20 years ago. Maybe they knew something

When I read all these claims about how the USA is a terrible place to live...I have to wonder if it's the same country I've been living in for over 30 years. Maybe I'm dreaming...

Weather : when you get old... the freezing cold get into your body and knee.... it's not fun... People who know they have a place with warm weather will park back and relocate immediately

Taxes: they are tired of paying taxes.. they wanna go back home and live like a king with less tax to worry about

Properties: You can't hav more than 3 house here... it's not above the law...but where u won take get $500k*3 to get a house... rather they channel it back home... just 150k$ will build standard high rated 2 duplex

Extended family not all family get the chance to move to abroad. Old folks return home to create new life with this people they left decades ago...

Political they wanna get more involved in politics.

So they return home to support, vote and some may be lucky to get appointments
very apt analysis!

There was an advert that ran about 3 years ago in the UK around Christmas time. It featured an elderly man sitting alone on a roadside bench, watching people strolling along the street: children playing tag, a young husband and wife with their kids, a pair of lovers, teenagers kidding around and laughing. Then the camera did a close-up of the old man's face and a tear came out of his eye and ran down his face. It was heartbreaking. The advert was from a charity, I forget the name, and they were calling for volunteers to keep old people company: read to them, have tea or just spend an hour chatting with them. I felt so depressed. The UK flu season usually witnesses a lot of death from old people who live by themselves. Abroad, whether US or UK, is a cold lonely place if you're alone. The US is better. Americans are nosy and friendly. British people, you fit de die next door, dem go just enter their house close door.

Americans are actually no different. Because the people we call Americans today are descendants of European colonisers

Your ignorance is of epic proportions. I doubt if you have ever stepped foot outside of Nigeria. You should at least let people who are returnees answer the question

Because the suffering there is not good for old age. Those type of people are selfish people who always run to the most comfortable zones and abandon their relatives at home.

If you think they are coming home just because they love home, why did they wait until old age? Are they running from enjoyment in diaspora?

Most of the things you enjoy as a youth will not give you happiness in your old age because they are not what your body and health require in old age. Those people hardly get what pleases old age in diaspora. That is why they run home to search for old-age happiness. There are many reasons.

Suffering is not only about the struggle to make money. Whatever threatens your health or saddens you means suffering.

Beffiting could be used in different forms, in my own words, beffiting means an architecturally functional design for an old lady as you've mentioned her. (A retired person would have probably been in her 60s)
