are you a barrister?

Stop arguing nonsense. You don't have to be a lawyer, all you need is understand English language.
Study the screenshots below then join the fight for honesty in sentencing .

The man was fined N120,000 for stealing N31,290,000

See this one. This is exactly why they keep getting away with these nonsense judgements. They count on the fact that general public like you don't understand nor try to understand these things.
My friend, option of fine means he can either go to jail for 1000 years OR pay the 5k fine. NOT BOTH!

We all should be outraged and there ought be public outcry about these deceptive judgments they keep churning out!

I’m guessing you don’t understand what the other dude is saying...the fine conditions might be extremely difficult for him to meet hence why there’s a high chance for him to still go to jail and in the judgment the properties and Money in his possession would have to be forfeited he won’t have any 300m plus to go back to as he won’t be paying the fine from the 431m he stole.....doesn’t work that way most times he would have to sort the fine from another source not the embezzled funds.

This is exactly why they'd keep getting away with it, people like you. Have you ever seen a case where properties and monies are forfeited and it is not clearly stated in the judgment to the minutest detail?
Yahoo boys receive this type of sentence everyday, don't you always see it spelt out what the judgment compels them to forfeit. What you should say is that the bribes the guy had to pay to obtain this type of judgment must have been very substantial.
Besides YOU don't understand the nonsense the other guy was arguing - that option of fine means he has to do both! People always saying and assuming what they don't know. By the way, only in Nigeria do u see these type of ridiculous sentences - a TOTALLY corrupt country, down to the press that report it!

Note how Sahara Reporters reported this below? That's how it ought be reported. That's why you see the outrage - it was reported in a way people understand. Guy was fined N120,000 for stealing N31,290,000!

He won't be doing any time. He'd be paying N50m in 2022 naira for stealing N450m in 2015 naira!

What do you mean by people like me?do I look like a crime apologist or a political jobber or something to you?Plsss....don’t put me in some meaningless box or labeling when there’s practically no need for that...be more circumspect with your words next time and going forward I don’t do unhealthy exchanges!

With that being said I never said the judgement is a good one and unless you’re privy to the judgement details you can’t say it doesn’t include seizures and for the yahoo boys you mentioned most of their court judgements or sentence whether with a fine option or not does include forfeiture of Money, property and valuables they literally get cleaned out by the EFCc most times.

Lastly I don’t give two fvcks about any corrupt criminal or approving of a “ slap-on-the-wrists “ kinda judgement but the law as you see is a double-edged sword and sound lawyers sometimes exploit the loopholes and technicalities and sometimes it’s a case of Efcc failing in their job of building a water-tight case hence they don’t get a conviction or those rogues simply get light sentences and the judges got to be upright and play their parts too. Also,I believe you’re aware that these things happen in advanced countries too.

Bros I'm just frustrated with people arguing nonsense instead of screaming at an obviously very corrupt system. Study the judgment and headline below. You have to know the press is in on it too, otherwise why can't they just spell out the truth: the guy won't spend a second in jail becuase he has billions and friends with billions!.
And no, this does not happen in advanced countries. Google and show where someone sentenced to 10 years can totally avoid jail by paying some paltry fine, a tiny fraction of what he stole!

I meant in advanced countries some criminals do get slaps on the wrist so judgement too..I don’t they necessarily substitute jail-terms for paltry fines and in tiny fraction of the embezzled funds!anyways there’s no gainsaying in the fact that our judicial system is quite corrupt!

In advanced countries what obtains are plea bargains, as in the case of Tinubu, where they REACHED A DEAL, and he forfeited $500,000 in 9 bank accounts.
In Nigeria's case it is not plea bargain but pure corruption where you can tell from the judgement that people were paid off!
Take care

You are wrong. I can google and come up with all sorts of ridiculous jail options in Nigeria. Google any advanced countries that follow the rule of law and you won't see any such obvious corruption. There is a difference between slap on the wrist than having newspaper headlines scream that some billionaire has been jailed for 4 years when in actuality what he got was 200K fine!
