You are not telling the truth. Ndi Igbo do not see Ikwerre people as lazy.

They are indeed great people with illustrious sons and daughters that have made in the course of our history .and still making remarkable stride. This is exemplify by the recent presidential primaries where two Iwhuruohna sons Wike and Amaechi performed far better than other fellow Igbo aspirants in thier respective parties.

I do not think this your diatribe is needed here or ever. Which of the Igbo Clans are you from?

You are ignorantly looking at whole great Ali Iwhuruohna from your myopic prism.

Let me enlighten you a bit.

Our Ochie (Etchie) people for example are farmers and I remember my father and grandfather making such jab at their city dwelling friends from Ala Owerri and Ali Rebisi as being lazy.
It is actually a fallacy since city dwelling clans have other ways of making money through real estate business and rentals. It is instructive to know that these city dwellers were formerly involved in farming and fishing before the whiteman came to their land and forcefully acquire the farmlands to set up colonial infrastructure and polluted the waterways.

I do not know which Igbo clan you belong to but most city dwellers like Ubakala (Umuahia), Owerri, Onitsha, etc. are termed as been lazy in like manner by other Igbo groups like Isoma, Wawa, Anioma and Ochie who are involved in physically intensive occupation. Majority of Ikwerre tribes like Emuoha, Isiokpo, Awarra are real farmers and have the same perception of city dwellers as other group.

It is instructive to note that most of these our folks we termed as lazy were highly educated and most worked in colonial government as court clerks( "courtimer"wink, interpreters, DC officers. Some even trained their kids to become first administrators in Igboland while the supposedly hardworking Igbo tribes were and are still in subsistence farming and petty trading till date.

So, my friend please stop the stereotypes. Ali Igbo has always been an egalitarian society, highly communal with every tribe specializing in many areas of trade and competing positively within and without.

Although some Igbo clans like Isuama - Orlu, Osu, part of Nnewi and Aro, etc have been very successful but that does not mean the others are not working hard to collectively uplift our great Igbo Nation in the increasing intolerant Nigeria.

Very comical when you idio.ts and criminals call Ikwerre and other tribes lazy.

Ikwerre is lazy because they are not joining your criminal franchise.

What makes Igbos 'unlazy'? Smelly thingz!

Only lazy people take the opinions of one man as the general opinion of everyone.

I really learnt from another, but your type are the lazy ones. After an opinion is sampled, they feel reluctant to gather anything else. The opinion continues to run in their heads

I have learnt that some Ikwerre people see themselves as Igbo, it is the lazy ones that snores in classes, the ones that wants to seize the properties of a neighbor that deny because they are targeting a property to seize.

Honestly, the Igbo see Ikwerre as their blood, that's why they always include Ikwerre in this type of list but my problem is the ones that the federal government plans of weakening us is working through for denying the heritage

Excellent!

Actually many ikwerre see themselves as Igbo.

I am so happy now that you understand what our Amazon, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie spoke about on the dangers of single story in Ted talk some years ago. The story is very much applicable to how people form opinion of a group by listening to the vocal and privilege few.

I have a small experience to share with you.

Some years ago I went to Aberdeen Scotland for a Drilling Engineering course (Well control) and was accommodated free of charge by an Onitcha-Ugbo couple. We had just exchange pleasantry as black people in the sea of whites and me telling them my name and state of Origin.. Those days we do not have many Nigerians in Scotland as we have now.

They treated me like a close relation to my utmost surprise. The couple prepared Ugba and feted me mostly with Igbo delicacies which made me not longing to go home even after my course period.

He also made it a point of duty to take me to Igbo meetings where I met lot of folks from Ogba, Ikwerre, Owerri, Nsuka and Anioma. The president then was man from Rivers Igboid ethnicity if I remember correctly.
When i was leaving and I asked them why they were so nice to me, they told me that they took me in immediately I told them my name and that I was from ikwerre-Etchie LGA in Rivers. Ikwerre and Etchie used to be LGA in those days.

That singular experience completely changed my world view of who is truly an Igbo. It may interest you to know that the current Ohaneze President in South Africa is a prominent and highly successful Ikwerre young man from Ogbakiri. As you probably know, South Africa arguably has the largest concentration of Igbos in Africa after Nigeria and Gabon.

This is to show you that Ikwerre are not lazy and the Igbo Nation respect hardwork and will always support people with sterling qualities irrespective of the Igbo clan they come from. Another prominent Igbo son is Dr Ogundu. Dr. Ogundu is a highly successful Ikwerre man from Isiokpo based in US who has gone out of his way to help any Igbo that comes his way irrespective of the clan they come from.

These folks should be our role model.

One of the lingering distrust between our South East Igbos and other Rivers Igboid group especially the Ikwerres is the abandoned property.

I am one of those that will always tell our Igbo brothers not to blame Ikwerre for the Abandon property issue. Ikwerres are victims just as other Igbo clans. Many Ikwerre families from Isiokpo and Awarra also lost their properties. It is was a divisive and devilish scheme devised by Igbo enemies to completely destroy the fabric of Igbo society and set brothers against brothers.

My grandfather, a well know Chief in Etchie had a one-story building in Port Harcourt town that was confiscated without minding that he was from Rivers. The house in question I learned has been sold several times and is ironically owned now by an igbo man from Akokwa in Imo state.. The house was build with my mpa’s hard earnings as a colonial court clerk and a successful farmer.

My grand father’s sin was he refused to deny his Igbo heritage and fought against those that wanted to bring the fictitious and unfounded Akalaka/Benin heritage of Ikwerre and Etchie to cause confusion. His sin to them was unpardonable and he was fought by Igbo enemies within and without who went all out to destroy him.

Meanwhile, an uncle’s property in Jos was kept intact and returned back to him based on personnel recognition.

There were no David mark panel for Abandoned property anywhere in Nigeria except Rivers. It was a devilish master stroke that cracked the foundation of Igbo brotherhood and yang off Igbo clans that have access to sea and Oil.

Driving this home frther, our Ochie clan was desecrated, balkanised and was almost rendered impotent because of their stand in maintaining their unique Igbo identity. Go to Etchie today, despite the fact that it si a major oil and Gas producer, it has nothing to show for it. Our major road that leads from Etchie to Ulakwo in Owerri North in Imo State is classified as an inter-state road. Everyone believe that the Federal government deliberately left it to rot to publish Ochie for their Igbo loyalty.

Pease let me not waste your time further …

In conclusion, I will appeal to you not to join some few vocal but uninformed folks to further walk into the trap set by enemies of Igbo to destroy what is left. Our people have suffered a lot and we need to encourage one another and not apportion blame as we pick up our pieces and rise again from the ashes.

What an expository Nwanne m, it's worth the long read

I implore every Ikwerre to read this. Well done brother.

Please do well to have a thread on this, it's quite educating (though nairaland will still frustrate such a thread)

Mama Nwanne m.

May the Good Lord continue to Bless you for putting the effort of coming here to educate our younger ones and those seeking for learned answers on these issues. As a fellow Riversman I applaud your effort and ingenuity.

I always take my time off to advise younger folks who work for me or come to me and are of igboid rivers stock to never let greedy politicians and monarchs who for their selfish reasons have chosen to distort their peoples history to suit an agenda. When you take away a peoples yesterday, you take away a part of their soul, and complicate their tomorrow.

Many people ask me why wade into this issue if you are not from an igboid group, and my answer to them is that I am a Rivers man and a Nigerian, who wants a good and balanced society all round, for ourselves and our generations to come. The FACT remains any marriage or relationship built on lies and suppression will eventually collapse. I have travelled extensively across the world to understand that this strategy has never worked anywhere in history world over. Our country is a relationship of many ethnicities and tribes, trying to sow discord between or intra tribes for political or economic gains is a catalyst for disaster. We are not going to make the progress that we desire as a nation until we make every Nigerian understand that we are all in this together, that I am fighting for you and you are fighting for me.

I have seen that this identity crisis created and perpetuated by the nigerian state is very a big issue in Rivers State, I am hopeful that the children of the upcoming generation in rivers state, and the nation at large will do better at fixing these issues. I encourage every learned and detribalized Rivers person to participate in these conversations whenever they arise.

I have been using nairaland since it was created, but only started commenting when I noticed agents of destruction and trolls were the most vocal on this site, leaving the unguided in Nigeria with nothing but negative voices to listen to.

At the OP Samyj247, With your list, your thread should say Igboid groups rather than Igbo groups in other not to cause conflict. There is a difference between both words. Igboid means having igbo ancestry, could have other ancestry as well, while igbo means its just igbo. Some of the Edo,Kogi and ijoid etc clans you listed there are fringe clans with not only igbo but other ethnicities as part of their ancestry and should be identified and respected as such.

For your header to be correct you would have to list clans that are purely igbo like Etche, Ikwerre, Egbema etc. IKwerre and igbos are the same people, their current identity crises is just political.
