Elections are elections for a reason and everyone tries to sell their candidates and possibly outsell others while at it. But the truth is that anyone with an atom of truth in their heart would understand that Tinubu never did jack in Lagos. His supporters claim he did and affected national politics but the thread is to counter the claims of his supporters.


Claim 1: "Asiwaju developed Lagos and also developed the blueprint for Lagos"

The truth: This is false in its entirety. Lagos was already developed LONG BEFORE 1999. For the record, it was the former capital of Nigeria and was annexed as part of the British colony in 1862. Lagos was Lagos before Tinubu became the governor of the state and had EVERY NOTABLE PLACES such as the National Stadium, Surulere; National Arts Theatre, Iganmu; Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Third Mainland Bridge, CMS, etc., long before Tinubu ever dreamt of becoming the executive governor of Lagos State. So how exactly did Tinubu "develop" a former British colony and former capital of Nigeria? What projects did Tinubu execute and commission in Lagos? How did he "develop" the blueprint for Lagos and what exactly is his Lagos blueprint?? BRT?

PS: I have seen instances where APC and Tinubu sympathizers campaign with Fashola and Ambode's strides and achievements as Tinubu's, claiming he put them into power. Excuse me...

Claim 2: "Tinubu is a visionary and knows how to pick the best people to lead (AKA Kingmaker)"

The truth: Everything Tinubu has done when it comes to Godfatherism has never been in the interest of the people but to serve his very own ambition. First, this is a video of Senator Bucknor Akerele, a woman who served as former deputy governor of Lagos State under Tinubu. Here, she referred to the APC (Lagos) as a "Mafia Organization", serving the interest of one man (watch from 2:30).

To be fair, Tinubu has made people but how many of those he made genuinely transformed or impacted through leadership?? Tinubu's influence in the South West is insane and almost unbelievable. However, he fell out with Fashola just because Fashola had his ideal candidate while Tinubu had his (Ambode). In the end, Fashola ate the humble pie while Tinubu went on to impose the same Ambode in Lagos, but guess who still sent Ambode packing for not doing his bidding? The Godfather!

Dapo Abiodun, the governor of Ogun State is one of the governors Tinubu bragged to have made, as well as his cousin, Adegboyega Isiaka Oyetola, the outgoing governor of Osun State. However, these two folks have been nothing short of terrible when it comes to leadership. What then happens to Tinubu's supposed insight in imposing the best hands to lead? How about Sanwo-Olu in Lagos who has been nothing short of a disappointment but has been freely handed a second term ticket just because he grovels at the feet of Tinubu and runs around Nigeria consulting with him?

In the whole of Tinubu's ascension as a godfather, the only person who stood out was Fashola as governor of Lagos State. His achievements conveniently dwarfs that of Tinubu himself but other "made kings" across the length and breadth of the South West are nothing short of disappointment, and this includes Aregbesola and Rotimi Akeredolu who currently owe salaries like no man's business. How then does his kingmakership translate to result for the people?

Claim 3: "Tinubu increased Lagos' IGR "

The truth: Shettima was quick to brag with this the other day during the NBA summit but did Tinubu do anything differently? What exactly did he do to increase Lagos IGR? What developmental strides did he embark on to achieve this? None! He did what almost every governor does now and that is the collection of tax! Lagos already had everything needed for any state to be developed long before Tinubu became the governor of Lagos. As earlier mentioned, Lagos was a former British colony and former capital of Nigeria with seaport, airport, road networks, home to embassies, multinational hotels, trade and commerce and Marina was already home to multinational companies such as banks before Tinubu became governor. Anyone with half a brain would see the IGR in Lagos increase through tax almost immediately. So what exactly did Tinubu do differently? Lagos, from inception was positioned to be great and it didn't require much to achieve its greatness. How did Tinubu develop Lagos economically when it was already the melting pot and economic nerve center of Nigeria?

I dare say Lagos would have been greater than what it already is if not for the invasive yet annoying godfatherism it suffers. Why? A sizeable amount of revenues generated from the same Lagos today all go to the pockets of one man through compulsory auditing, contracts and what not. No one sitting governor can fix or develop any part of Lagos without the consent of Tinubu. The last governor who defied Tinubu and focused on the development of Epe was robbed of a second term. We all knew what happened.

An aside: The ONLY THING Tinubu did in Lagos was to set up a structure for the collection of tax, which was lacking during previous rules, both under military and democratic rule.

Claim 4: "Tinubu did excellently well in Lagos"

The truth: This isn't hard to deduce. What exactly did Tinubu do differently despite inheriting an almost fully developed Lagos with almost everything? How did he leave Lagos? What was the state of Oshodi at the time Tinubu left it? Take out every advantage Lagos had as an economic powerhouse before Tinubu came in and you'd realize Tinubu's administration was nothing short of chaotic and disappointing. Prior 1999, how was thuggery in Lagos and what was its state by the time Tinubu left office? What exactly can anyone point out to be Tinubu's legacy in Lagos? What foreign investments did Tinubu bring to Lagos? The answer is as clear as day because the structure for the economic development of Lagos was already in place. If Tinubu wants to take credit for Lagos for being a former British colony and former capital of Nigeria, then his supporters should point out the foreign investments he brought into Lagos.

At this rate, it is going to take a miracle to find an OBI supporter that has common sense.

Not everyone studied accounting. There are diverse courses in universities and I sure as hell didn't study accounting or come close just so I know what a "revenue base" is about. That said, what was and IS the major revenue source of Lagos and how did Tinubu create the opportunity?
