How Red Pottage Purged One Man In The Bible

It was a man called Esau.

He was said to have sold his birthright for a plate of red pottage.

Genesis 25:29-34 (KJV)

And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint:
And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.
And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.
And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?
And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.
Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.

At that point his birthright meant nothing to him because of his strong desire for a plate of red pottage as though he would die if he didn't eat of it, however after eating it, the red pottage he had eaten began to purge him because of his birthright which he had lost as a result, as his eye later became open to see the gravity of his blunder.

However instead of blaming himself for his own mistake and the loss of his birthright which he brought upon himself, he began to complain and cry foul as though he was forced to sell his birthright and it wasn't a conscious choice he made of his own volition, because he was blinded by his lustful desire for a plate of red pottage to the extent he didn't consider his birthright as something of importance to him.

Genesis 27:36 (KJV)

And he said, Is not he rightly named Jacob? for he hath supplanted me these two times: he took away my birthright; and, behold, now he hath taken away my blessing. And he said, Hast thou not reserved a blessing for me?

That's also how Adam and Eve sold not just their birthright, but also their souls to the devil in the beginning for food.

They were the rulers of the Earth and had authority and dominion over all the Earth and everything God had made in the beginning, but they sold that right to the devil for just a bite of the forbidden fruit. Genesis 1:26-30, 3:6.

In their own case, it was even worse because it wasn't hunger that caused them to sell their birthright, but just a strong craving for food they hadn't tasted before.

It was only after they had eaten the food, that their eyes became opened to the gravity of the error they had just made, as the forbidden fruit began to consequently purge them. Genesis 3:11-19

Up til this very the forbidden fruit they foolishly ate in the beginning is still purging their descendants, but still many today have not yet learnt from their error as they still sell their souls to the devil just for food.

In their own cases, the food may not be red pottage or the forbidden fruits but could mean the body of the opposite sex, money, fame, power or the temporal pleasures of this world.

They trade their eternity for just a momentary pleasure on this Earth, but later on when it begins to purge them especially in hell, they'd realize that it wasn't worth all the pain.

May you not trade your soul for what would purge you at the end. In Jesus Name!

God bless.
