Oga in this 21 century, you can't isolate yourself from global business by banning importation. You raise import taxes and encourage local production just like Trump did.
Fund your education sector and research institutions to reverse engineer and localize machines and equipments. The import duties you tax on imported products can be used to fund business ideas just like the Tony Elumelu foundation.

We are in the 21st century. You need smart leaders who will think outside the box for goodness sake. [/quote]
Go back to school and learn English, restrictions is different from ban, restrictions means, not allowing things we can produce come into Nigeria, and increasing quality control, not just allowing things we don't need inside. A nation's earnings must be more than his expenditure to other nations, and this can be done by increasing export and restrictions on unecessary imports. Nigeria has been importing too much, too much of what we don't need we are spending money on. When trump came in, he imposed a lot of import restrictions, and this boosted employment for Americans as home industries produce and sell more. We should concern ourselves with Nigeria and Nigerians first. Utilizing monetary and fiscal policies to give home industries an advantage is what every nation does. Especially a nation like Nigeria who can not really compete on production, we must protect home industries to grow, provide Nigerians jobs, expand the economy, export and earn foreign exchange, this is the trajectory we should be heading.

Raising import taxes is part of import restrictions!

See why I called you people half baked cheesy

Don't you know too much importation causes inflation?

Too much cash in circulation without much production activity, just spending, money ain't spreading, we are not expanding.

Peter obi is already contradicting himself. He want to make Nigeria a production state. He also want to open importation. How come??

Hunger, joblessness and bleak future encourages insecurity.
If these boys are employed, who has time for insecurity?
The future is uncertain. Politicians use these boys to cause insecurity. Nigerians are not asking for much. They don't wanna lose grip of the masses.

Poverty is a curse and a disease

I totally agree with you....its been 8 years now and this past military man has failed woefully having taken power from the opposition party. Can we try another party instead of washing, rinsing and repeating the same insanity? Can you believe the current situation? They have no shame! They have turned the country into a poverty unsafe den! Imagine earning in millions and still running out of the country.....my friends are now paying huge school fees in UK to just get out of the system, my colleagues in Naija are always looking to fill a vacant position....brain drain is now a huge thing.....Whew!

I am not surprised at all. Someone already predicted this about HE Obi because Obi needs to keep importing foreign goods for his import business and supermarkets.

Little wonder he has nothing tangible to use to campaign for his 8 years in office as Anambra governor.

For the uncouth Igbo youths defending container economy, please go and look at the export side, if you see the export side of non-oil sector of Nigeria and where they come from in Nigeria ehn, you will never consider Igbo container economy as progress and never wish Igbo continues to be a dumping ground.

Check our foreign direct investments(FDI) too( screenshots of leading fdi states for both Q1 and Q2 2022 are below) and you will not see any SE states at the top 2 so these container economy is not it at all and not progress in the absence of FDI.

While SE is taking containers, Lagos, alone takes over 70% the FDI in billions! Apart from Anambra which is still very very low due to this container economy mentality and insecurity, all other SE states attracted zero fdi so far this year

Below is jiust the agricultural sector alone, watch cocoa from the SW and Sesame from the North with Jigawa the highest producer, doing multiple times the other agric ptoducts and bringing in forex into Nigeria and not destroying the environment or bringing in toxic contents.

I completely disagree with your suggestion that container economy is what Igboland needs.

Top priority for SE, and I agree with Prof. Soludo , is responsible parenting because most parents in Igboland have abandoned their responsibility of raising disciplined, respectful, educated and Godfearing patriotic children, these children currently litter the social media space for ipob terrorist group and jails in Nigeria and all over the world, followed by peace in Igboland un order to stop the shedding of blood of innocent patriotic Nigerians then investment especially from other tribes and foreigners so Igboland can attract investments and talents from other places like the SW does excellently.

Are you stupid? Or you just want to talk nonsense? Do you know how much tax is impose on foreign goods when we are not even producing or manufacturing toothpicks here in Nigeria, farmers don’t have enabling environment to farm because of killer Fulani herdsmen who are destroyed peoples farm and agricultural produce, no security is guaranteed for them, A reasonable government would first engage in local production to a capacity of satisfying at least 70% of Nigerians consumption before imposing heavy tax on importation, in your eyes everything is politics but systematically you are dying from the useless economy policy being made by those whom you are supporting, Abeg make una wake up oo tribalism and political sentiments won’t make Nigeria a better a country only good government can do that

In a layman's term. Allow the market to regulate itself.

All things being equal, as long as we have the right amount of export to counter import, naira will bounce back under 2 yrs.

You started well and ended woefully, bro economist.

Since they weren't able to solve the insecurity issue, Buhari tenure made it worse, should we then go hungry and watch things become incredibly hard at home? Bread is now N1,050 from N250 during Jonathan's regime. Let's allow the economist pangolo help us while the current gurus take a bow. Buhari made insecurity worse, economy worse.....even the air in naija has become worse in his regime. To make matters worse, he and his people are proposing another medically unfit person to come and continue where he stopped. Too bad for Nigeria....too blawdy bad! Enough of sentiments, we were doing much more better when we couldn't even produce toothpicks. Better then than now that were kept failing at self sufficiency!
If emotions prevail over intelligence, you easily be fed the trash you deserve. Since Buhari lifted the blockage across the boarders about a year ago, what has changed?. Indiscriminate pricing, hoarding and consumer exploitations have been on the increase. With the current infrastructures ( trains, roads & CBN's agric initiatives) templates, security becomes the priority - must be top on the list of any serious-minded Presidential candidate.
If you'd upgrade your knowledge to understand the fact that the country have been able to increase investments in critical sectors than the last 16 years. You bother too much about food but less about the making of the food.
Need I remind you, if you miss Tinubu, you most likely would have missed you greatest opportunity for a better tomorrow for you & your kids.

If you don't know the difference between baning and restrictions of imports, then it seems you have no idea what it's all about. You don't really understand it. Don't let sentiments becloud your reasoning. Obi gaffes a lot, he is not as smart as he fakes it to be. Too many contradictions. He is against import restrictions and he supports increasing import taxes, increasing import taxes on goods your nation can adequately produce or don't really need, is a direct import restriction measure.

You keep quoting these myths that imports are bad.

Imports aren't bad. What's bad is when you don't export. Nigeria barely imports 5% of what a place like Hong Kong does or Singapore does..

Nigeria needs an export boom. Imports aren't the problem.

What you see are rhe manifestation of the seed sown a long time ago. The Igbos are just too good in copying which is why they have the best and worse in good and bad. They can move to everywhere, copy, adapt and manifest cultures picked over time. The problem is that the seed of imbalance has produced different kinds of fruits. Fruits that the Igbos have consumed as well as other Nigerian however each with different taste.

All part of Nigeria, parents have abandoned their responsibilities. That is why most of us cannot stand up against our wicked and suppressive brothers and uncles. We are all cowards when it comes to standing up to our rights. Heaping it on the Igbos alone is not proper. These and more are the reasons why we need to restructure our country because many Igbos think the best for them is to have their own country. THE COUNTRY WILL BE BETTER IF RESTRUCTURED TO ALLOW STATES DECIDE THEIR LOCAL AND FOREIGN INVESTMENT FATE AND SECURITY.

Lagos has been the pride of Nigeria. Sir Louis Ojukwu's home. As we type here, millions of Igbos are still building in the swamps of Lagos while investing hugely in Lagos. Good tidings we got from the metropolitan nature of Lagos which has endured decades before our independence in 1960.

In his work on the Theory of Motivation, Abraham Maslow used the hierarchy of Needs and other aspects of motivation to show us how to achieve Progress in life. Everything PO is saying is revolving round the wonderful idea. Progress.

How can you progress when you cant feed your own? You have to count on me before you count two and this is the natural order of things. You have to build up the system before you can bring in the FDI that will modulate the sectors of production. You build up the country by fixing forex which is how we are measured on the international level.

This election will be very unusual!

We both know prices do not come down in Nigeria except if there is a serious shock to the market....he created the artificial high rise when he closed the border and gave hoarders the idea of creating the artificial scarcity....its the norm here.

Why do you think diamonds are so expensive? You think they are rare? LOL.

Diasporans who earned in dollars are selling their dollars at the black market rate in the one on one market as if the high cost in Nigeria affected their earnings in far away US. What do you think made the dollar costly in their hands? Biko no more talk on this matter....may God rid this country of destructive politicians and those before them! Enough is enough!

Liberate the gateways. Not the senseless, impactless and useless economic blockades the APC govt placed on the lucrative southern borders with attendant huge economic loss sometime back while the northern fringes were just leeways for terrorists to freely stroll in and do more damages.

Nigeria case is an import and a oil-mono-economy dependent nation because local production are not sufficient enough to meet local consumption demand.

And what did the senseless blockade Buhari government imposed on the borders yielded? Did local production increased or saved Nigeria from the present food inflation and insecurity nationwide especially with the insecurity menace on farmers?

Liberate the economic and provide security first, to encourage local and foreign investors that will boost the process and enhance food production to help us shift from local consumption to export.
If Obi becomes President and does that. Nigeria will become a dumping ground for imported goods and services, then naira will be worse that Venezuela's money. Zimbabwe may be better than us.
What was Obi doing in Kano for local rice production?
He said Nigeria need to become a production country not consumption country.
So which of the Obi should Nigerians follow?

I'm going to be honest, and say that this means we would have dollars flowing out of the country...meaning at the end, the value of the naira would crash heavily.

The dollar restrictions we have, as harsh as they are...are why we are not exchanging N5000 for one dollar today...and I am not exagerrating. It may sound cool at first, but the truth is, we are not earning enough dollars to liberalise the market yet.

I know a lot of people like the idea, because we want to go back to the days when we could spend over 500 dollars in a month. But until I see a concrete plan on how we are going to earn more dollars from Obi...and no, I don't want to hear that Obi taking power in Abuja means that we would suddenly get an income of 100 bn dollars a month....and it has to be a plan that involves total removal of subsides...because that is where most of our forex goes...and heavy enforcement of taxation.ie raising our tax to gdp raito to 50% or more.......I'm afraid this plan is wishful thinking. If not a plan to cause severe forex shortage, and inflation, and the naira looking like Zim dollars....

For once, Obi is wrong.

(P.S This does not mean you or i should vote for tinubu or atiku...).
Of what good is a president that won't develop our economy, and further crash our currency. Even a kid in secondary school knows too much imports reduce currency value and shrink economy, causing inflation.

Ever since Obi started talking,, he has not been able to xonvinyme and state methodically how he will transom the economy. Obi's followers is dumbing him down. They are like "obi even you are dumb and clueless, we support you" hell no, we don't need a dull president.

Obi who himself is one of the biggest importers of consumer goods in the last 30years without no production outfit, is scheming to further enrich his cabals of importers at the detriment of the economy.
if the ordinary man on the road can get access to $ don't you think the burden on the naira will reduce?

I wont read all but let me just answer the question you asked at the beginning....

They wont gerrit especially the diamond bit you said!

Enlighten me, closing the borders for instance, do you call it ban or restriction?
You are obsessed with Buhari,I don't give a Bleep about any politician, am telling you economics. The topic is what am responding to, Obi said imports restrictions should be removed, this will flood our market with unwanted goods and reduce our currency value more, we won't be able to create jobs for our youths if foreign goods flood our market, because our local industries won't see space to sell and grow.
You're too emotive. Where did I mention Buhari? You make it really difficult to engage you.
