The Surma people are divided into three ethnic groups: Mursis, Suris, and Mekans. Suri and Mursi cultures are quite similar. The size of their women's lip plates determines their beauty. Some of these people can be found in southern Ethiopia, around Lake Turkana and the Lower Omo Valley.

Lip plates typically range in size from 4 to 25 centimeters and are made of clay or wood. Two or four teeth are removed from the lower lip before the lip plate is trimmed to fit the lip plate. When kids reach adolescence, their mother usually performs the lip plate procedure.

A ceramic disc is placed after the cut to expand the lip and will stay in place until the initial cut heals before being replaced with a slightly larger disc. The process is repeated until the lip develops large enough to fit the first lip plate, which is approximately 4 cm in length.
