Firstly, whether you like it or not, ChatGPT is another level of disruptive technology that Machine learning has brought upon us.

It's talked about out there, but why not here on Nairaland where we have great developers?

Here's my take:

You need to understand that Microsoft invested $1b into that firm which helped it use the data from millions of repositories to learn how to code. Though it's decades from actualizing writing complex code.

Also, Remember Microsoft also owns GitHub, So that fact is that ChatGPT is a moving train for every imaginary sci-fi you can think of.

Virtually every code snippet you want to build as a junior developer is somewhere out there on GitHub, ChatGPT intelligently parses every repo and gets an output based on your query. It's the same thing the co-pilot does. Though there is a lot more algorithm scope that goes on under the hood.

Truth is, it will keep advancing and bring about automation thereby giving room for more senior development positions and needing fewer juniors.

My advice is to learn evolving skills in tech to be competitive. But as always, keep your keys open and don't grind blindly. Follow mentors in the field to know what's the projections of things so you won't be left behind.

So Nairalanders, let's hear you all

You'll all eventually learn how to think like an Entrepreneur one way or the other.

While you're thinking "How do I get jobs now since this thing is about laying me off"? angry

And Entrepreneur is thinking, "How do I make more money with this amazing technology "? grin

Bottom line is, some people will find it useful, while others will find it threatening....

There are 8 billion people out there. Innovation has always been built with "workers" who also turn out to be innovative thinkers.

ChatGPT is a product of the ingenuity of engineers. The day you start your business and don't employ anyone, or make sure the people that patronize you ain't workers somewhere, then you can preach the helm of entrepreneurship to everyone.

There's something called balance. Know this and know peace cheesy

Sir... it's fact we need more Entrepreneurs.

U wouldn't be employed if someone didn't come up with the idea/ thinking which led to your employment in the first place.

Yes... there will always be balance.... But a good country which wants majority of its citizens to be employed will encourage the youths to be creative , innovative and have mindset of an entrepreneur instead of a Job seeker.

All I'm saying is, while you feel threatened by this tool.

Others feel nothing but happiness for this tool will help them a lot in growing their business.

Like as someone who does Internet Marketing.

This tool will help me automate majority of my works

If I have a blog which needs contents every blessed day, I can use this tool to help me create topics which I can later go through, edit and then post on my blog.

If I need a tool which can serve as an Autoresponder to similar queries from my customers, I can use this tool.

If I need a tool to generate short snippet of codes for my Tech blog, I can also use this tool.

They're many features there which can help u make money....

AI is the Future... wether anyone likes it or not lol... Learn how to be flexible with your skillset so that u won't be left behind.... Engineers and Programmers will never be totally erased by AI... but most of current works and jobs will eventually be handled by an artificial intelligence. grin

It's not about a threat. It's about an new disruption and That's what a community as this is all about, so we can discuss about trends in tech.

Have you been to a startup pitch before? Do you know what it takes to get funds from VCs?

Check all Nigerian Tech Startups, their funders have extensive experience in the filed at which they later built on. From Flutterware, Paystack, Paga, Kuda, etc.

This is a developer thread, and the aim is to have discussions on our Field. smiley

Honestly, entrepreneurship is very amazing but it's not easy. I used to run a startup as a mechanic before I got into tech and I tried raising funds from various entrepreneurship competitions and the closest I could ever get to was being a finalist. On my own, without any support or funding, I was doing like 10k USD in annual revenue and I was even able to employ someone full-time. I even built on some really solid partnerships with very solid brands like Bosch and Febi bilstein as a distributor of their products but covid and the whole lockdowns destroyed the shit. I didn't even have a kobo to push things further and had to painfully shut stuff down.

When I newly got into tech I still had that entrepreneurship bug o. You can ask qtguru but even when I was between jobs I hadn't even smelt remote my target was Envato. I tried reaching out to so many UI UX designers to see how we can partner, they design and I build so we can put up those products and sell them. It's a really long shot but if Envato works out and you are able to build out products that people love you can get like 2000 USD after fees and split it 50 50 which honestly is a lot of money for someone living in Nigeria. Omho nobody gree o. All the designers I met then snubbed me, even newbie designers just learning design were asking for one million naira to design a theme. I still pushed it further sha. Saved some money and got a designer and built and submitted my first theme but it was rejected for being too dated in terms of design.

Spot on. It's easy to echo entrepreneurship, but the grit and finance it requires is what a lot of people don't know about.

There's this startup idea I had just like what Colab is doing to get junior devs to get experience, but the resources needed are no joke. Social skill is like 80% of what you need to run a successful start up. Deficient technical parts can always be compensated with good hands. But as the spare head, if your social skills are poor, no matter the spark of your idea it will hardly grow.

How would they be paid? Absolutely no one is gonna work for free not even those who started learning code today.

Thats why Peaches are available to raise funds grin. At least you had an experience when you went for yours and got hit hard. It's the side of the coin that Entrepreneurship preaches don't emphasize

Even raising funds from pitches isn't guaranteed. I pitch tire. My submission for the royal prize of engineering was rated amongst the best and made it to the top 65 finalists out of thousands of applicants but Lori iro nothing came from it. Is it Anzisha, I even made it to the interviews and flopped it. There was so much o it was crazy. If i wasn't selling or marketing I was working on those.

I can remember when copy.ai was introduced, so many copywriters lost their jobs, but those who were more grounded with the skill never got affected. There are lot of people still learning that skill up till now. I'm sure that event helped to weed out those who came for the fun.

Damn. Now imagine someone advising you to quit your tech role now in the name of "not working for others". That's why I say everybody's case is different. Just look at the guys that left paystack and built several firms. Their former bosses invested heavily also.

For me sha, I'm more of an investment person. I like my money working for me. I rather watch closely at bright ideas, then invest in it. If the CEO turn weray, then I buy the firm. That's why businesses that evolve around real estate and health care are kings

I read a response on Reddit to a similar question. The response said:

“Should mathematicians be worried about the digital calculator?

Nope. It helps to calculate the minutia more quickly allowing their brains to focus on the more difficult aspects of equations.

This may help you to nail that async function you just can't seem to figure out and slow you to focus your time on the more human aspects of the job.”

And it makes a lot of sense. ChatGPT is just a tool much like Google is a tool. It will allow devs to focus on the more complicated high level stuff such as program design leaving the mundane low-level of writing actual code to something that can be automated

You're a smart guy oh. Why did you leave the mechanic project? I actually don't know much in that field but I'm looking at it as a lucrative field. Our major problem is access to funds, but I think that's a problem all over the world. Some projects also involve collaboration.
