The road to America

By the end of March 2022, I have received responses for all my school applications. I have four total offers with one being funded. I was very happy but I decided to keep calm as I have read several cases of people being denied visas at the embassy.

I proceeded to arrange for the payment of my SEVIS and visa fees. I had a little delay with the payment of my SEVIS fee, so I could not pay on time. For this reason, I missed the early dates that were released for the interview. When the money was finally paid, I started looking for interview dates in Abuja. This process was arguably one of the hardest as dates were always not available. After a series of sleepless nights and sleeping on my computer keyboard, I managed to get a date that was a few days to resumption. I picked this date and began my preparation for the visa interview.

When it was two days before my interview, I left Ogun State for Abuja by road. Prior to this time, I have read news of kidnappings on the road. Although the news greatly disturbed me and my loved ones, the flight cost was exorbitant and going for that option would create a big hole in my finances considering my current and future expenses.

I got to Abuja at night and lodged at a guesthouse for two nights. On the day of the interview, I woke up very early and went to the US Embassy at Diplomatic Drive. When I got there, I met other people who were the for the same purpose and I went straight to the front. About an hour later, we lined up and were told to go in after the checks.

Throughout the process, I was so nervous because the stakes were so high. Since I was the first person in the queue, I was also the first person to be interviewed by the visa officer. My interview lasted for less than three minutes and I was approved. I quickly took my files and left the embassy for the guesthouse. Then I called my family and friends to inform them about the good news. It seemed surreal! My visa has been approved and I will be going to America!

A few weeks later, I booked my flight and the travel was scheduled for December. After spending time with my family and loved ones, I departed Nigeria for the United States in December 2022.

Yes, dreams do come true! I hope someone will try again one more time before giving up on life.

Omo you are a real NEVER SAY DIE congratulations!!!

A big congrats to you. Nothing good ever comes easy. I had shared my experience here times without number. Of all the good things of life anyone can boast of, a private jet is what I've not bought yet and if God permits, I'd surely have one before leaving this earth. Please while studying, I'd advise you look for opportunities which you could leverage upon here in Nigeria. Nigeria is a country where you can easily make it once and forever legit. Come back home after your studies with the tapped opportunities and develop them here, just like a few of us did with no regrets. I wish you the very best!

Hello. Please do you mind sharing your experience with me and the opportunities one can take advantage of in Nigeria presently. Thanks!

Big congratulations, man. I'm really happy for you and thanks for sharing your story. It's so inspiring.

What I learned from your story is that, anybody can achieve anything if they put their mind to it and work towards it.

That is a great lesson.

And I hope some people who believes that they cannot make a fortune online, would read and learn from this.

After taking and failing on several salary jobs, your biggest victory came through freelancing.

A lot of talented Nigerians are struggling with salary jobs, some are getting underpaid and would even go broke before end of the month.

I have also experienced it. Ever since I left school, I have worked in just 3 different places but my monthly salaries from these 3 places combine together is not up to what I now make in a week with just my Sample phone and HP laptop.

There are several legitimate and profitable business one can do online and make money from. You don't have swindle people, invest 10k to get 50k or bring 2 people to bring 2 people before you make money online.

All those sh*t are the traps that scammers set for lazy people who don't want to invest in themselves to learn and master a skill that they can offer as services to people and make money.

Money is byproduct of value. If you offer people something of value, a solution to their problem, they will give you their money.

The reason some people struggle with salary jobs is because they don't want to learn any other thing than what they learned from school. They are so obsessed about their degrees.

The world has moved beyond degrees to skills and it moving towards AIs. If you must survive in this country, you must acquaint yourself with high income digital or tech skills.

Then use that skill to build a brand, sell products online or offer services to people who needs it and can afford it... you will be surprised how sapa will be flying away from you gradually..lol

Once again, thanks for sharing your story man. I appreciate and I pray for God's favour and protection to abide with you in the US 🇺🇸.

I also pray that God who helped you will also help everyone who is willing to pursue his or dreams including myself. It is well with all of us.

Stay safe, brother.. smiley

Hello there. Please do you mind sharing the online business you do now? Thanks

What can one come back to do profitably?

Oh, great question bro. Let me start from my uncle...

In the 90s, he left GA for Nigeria. He saw an advert of Xantrex Engineering inside a magazine and the thought of epileptic power supply back home came to his mind. He resigned as a banker and left for US. He got a job at Walmart. He stopped at a Mexican's paper vendor on his way home, since there was nobody to meet at home so he was just whiling away time with the newspapers. In short, he wrote to xantrex and they said they weren't interested in expanding to Africa and being a new technology, couid be very difficult for him to market their trace inverters in Nigeria.

2 wks later, they reconsidered his interest and wrote to him to join them for 2 weeks training after which he must come to Nigeria to market their products with some demos which he did. His fiends said his village people had prevailed over him because he said he was coming back home. He went to cbn to market it on arrival but they said they had 3 standby gens. When he asked if he could install free demos and they said yes. Some months later,.there was a grid collapse which affected the cbn area. All the 3 generators were overused so they packed up. The directors were in shock after the 3rd gen packed up thinking their IT dept had been affected and data had been lost. On getting there, the solar inverter did the magic, they were so happy they could still keep their data safe. That was what gave my uncle a leap for life.

The CBN invited him to an urgent meeting, they thanked him for saving them from huge data loss and asked him to install the Inverter in all the CBN's branches and offices nationwide. When atm came to Nigeria, the cbn recommended him to all the leading commercial banks. He's a wealthy man today. Xantrex Engineering who once turned down his application for agency invited him to a ceremony as the best global distributor of the year 3 times, beating India, Europe and China. My uncle singly sponsored one of the governors' elections in the country, to describe how rich he was.

My story,I came back home with my own ideas which serve both health sector and the oil and gas in Nigeria today. By God's grace, I'm doing very well. My expertise had taken me to meet with president Obama at the DAR Hall, in DC. I was the only Nigerian in attendance in that gathering in which over 1000 professionals attended from around the globe.

Your moniker suggests to me you know God so, pls Keep praying to Him to reveal to you the hidden riches of secret places. There are opportunities here. Cheers!

Well, yes. I can speak for myself and my uncle. None of my friends who did same ever regretted too. Google xantrex engineering, my uncle is the distributor for the west African countries. Engr Seyi Makinde, the oyo state governor isn't known to many today how he made it through oil and gas. He was already a billionaire before becoming governor. He too chose not to stay. After he made it, he kept his family over there while he faced his business squarely.
At least, i know someone who knows him
closely. The list is endless .

If you feel you're comfortable wherever you are, it's fine. Everyone can't come back home. But Nigeria is a fertile land cos I can attest to this. That's my point. Before I came, Indians were dominating our sector. The moment I came, we had a reasonable share of the market. These people would come to Nigeria with one shirt and a pair of trousers but in a few years, they've become multi millionaires in dollars, same as Chinese. Look everywhere, our people are nowhere to be found and this is worrisome.

247Hustler:
Worst job experience: working in the factory

I returned to my aunt’s place and continued my desperate search for a way out. About two days after my return, I got news from my uncle-in-law that the popular Gee Pee & Vee Pee (the manufacturers of geepee tanks) were hiring in Otta. I didn’t waste time. I went there the same day and I was hired after a series of questioning. There was no job description and I was to do anything I was to be assigned each day. Resumption was 7am and closing was 7 pm, with a 30-minute break in between. The salary was twenty-one thousand naira (#21,000), and one day salary would be deducted if one is caught loafing once. Subsequent ones will lead to additional deductions.

The following day, I resumed the job. The environment was just like a concentration camp with taskmasters standing around to monitor who was loafing. One must not be seen standing throughout the 12 hours of work or the day's pay would be deducted. I was assigned different tasks that ranged from offloading raw materials from the trucks and packaging finished products.

By 7 pm which was the closing time, I was so exhausted that I could not carry my legs or raise my hands. But I did manage to shower before taking my leave. When I left the factory, I vowed never to continue that job no matter the situation. This became the worst job experience in my life. The time was early 2015.

Oga, make una try dey calm down small small nah... shooo....

How can you just start throwing figures around like that?... What truck drivers make $30-50k a month... abeg calm down small..... don't mislead the guy at all....

Yes, truck drivers make money, but not that much.... not even half of what you quoted.

I will advise you go for number 1 on the list, which is IT....

Track some naija guys around, there are always different IT classes you can enroll in.... It won't cost you more than $3k-5k, and can take between 6 weeks to 12 weeks.... After the training, package your resume.... post on Indeed and Dice, and also package your Linkedln profile... that's all you need...

Meanwhile, find other jobs to do while taking the IT classes... cos you go need bar to take dey pay your bills and even pay for the class.... trust me, in about 6-8 months, you would be happy you did...

As for the others on the list (Medical Doctor and Nursing), those ones go still take you at least 4 years (Nursing), and at least 8-9 years for the Medical Doctor.... so the IT is your best choice for now...

Even the truck driving will still take you a while... cos you have to go through the driving school... and then you have to shadow someone, before you become a full driver..... If you decide to travel inter-state, there is money in it... but not even up to half of what was quoted here......

So use your sense.
Dshocker:

Have you gotten a job yet

If you want to make money in the United States;

1.......IT
2....... Truck driving
3....... Medical doctor
4....... Nursing

If you are serious, you can be making $30,000-$50,000 a month driving truck.

Per annum you make $360,000-$600,000
