@Yawa-ti-de,

Your effort in starting this thread is highly commended.

Please before you bring out the shovel and spade to work, first make contact with the current developers of the site to ensure they will appreciate your kind gesture and allow you access to publish the materials to the domain. Otherwise, you could develop the website but you cannot publish it as the FGN owns the domain.

Remember that some Nigerians are already working for their daily bread on that website under the knowledge and control of the FGN.
Re: Calling On All Web Designers/developers: Redesign Of Nigeria.gov.ng by CyberG: 4:11pm On Sep 17, 2011
Nice one! I want in but my sharpest knife is C++ which I doubt is needed for this project. But let me know if you need any C++. Let the PM carry the stakeholders along from the beginning o, especially the so called FGN.

@OP and all,

Nice initiative o! Woulda loved to join in but as it is. . . seems you already have more than enough hands on deck. I didn't know Naijarians can be so patriotic o grin

Anyways. . . would love to see what you guys come up with in the end. Trust it'll be great. Cheers wink
Re: Calling On All Web Designers/developers: Redesign Of Nigeria.gov.ng by soreola(f): 4:51pm On Sep 17, 2011
very interesting project, I won't mind evaluating the project afterwards in terms of aesthetics, overall feel etc

I suggest you create an invite-only facebook page, where everyone who has volunteered so far will be added. I feel it will be a better place to communicate or even skype or even a blog sef. To protect everyone's privacy, you could create a blog and have each person send a msg that contains their skype info and nairaland name, and once the list is complete, the blog could then be deleted.

With Skype u can have a live text convo or even a voice convo. I'm definitely looking forward to the end result of this project. Kudos to you all  wink

I'm in - please list my name under miscellaneous

This is up my alley - I am working on website design (2 of them) during this time.

I would love to be part of this project as well.

feel so humbled reading through this thread! Kudos to the originator of the idea and those who have subscribed so far.My eyes are wild open and watching keenly.

C,C++ are my domain, so not so sure I really fit into the project- kinda sad though!

I KNOW IT IS STILL EARLY DAYS, however since someone has raised the question, just thought I should suggest thus: As per historical/cultural contents, the Federal Ministry of Information NIGERIA @50 compandioum would definately come handy!

Great and bold initiative and I commend all involved!

Good initiative guys, but if no one in the government will listen to you to redesign Nigeria.gov.ng well all is not lost as I'm ready to allow you to build a similar website for Nigeria with this domain name: Nigeria.bz
Re: Calling On All Web Designers/developers: Redesign Of Nigeria.gov.ng by ogzille(m): 6:58pm On Sep 17, 2011

Re: Calling On All Web Designers/developers: Redesign Of Nigeria.gov.ng by dnative(m): 8:00pm On Sep 17, 2011
Good call and about tyme too!!!

I can see this transforming into a formidable team to take on other rubbish federal government web sites, (customs, nysc,  etc to name a few) based on the success of this initiative.

yawa-ti-de:

@instinctng
Since the aim would be to (hopefully) hand over the site to the government, I was thinking there is no need per se, to register another "nigeria" domain. This might also double as those guys not seeing us as a threat but as partners.  Let's hold off on the domain stuff for now.  There will be plenty of time for this and others.  Let's rather focus on those who are "ready to serve".  Though this will be ongoing, I intend to end round 1 of volunteer solicitiation, based on demand so far, by September 18, 2011,

IMHO - The effort will always be seen as a threat by the various existing stakeholders for the obvious and not so obvious reasons. It may be ideal to actual position the team as such - the formidable (but non-commercial, non-profit oriented) alternative to those multi-million denominated FG web projects and initiatives that are nothing to write home about, the same way 'Open Source' had thrived (and still thriving) as a potent alternative to mainstream commercial solutions. However this will largely depend on the Naija factor not creeping in eventually as had already been highlighted and the primary motivation continues to be 'everything but the money'.

BTW - I have no skills or competence in the web development arena and unable to contribute technically to this project save for encouraging you guys.

May the Force be with you all !

Re: Calling On All Web Designers/developers: Redesign Of Nigeria.gov.ng by OmniPotens(m): 8:01pm On Sep 17, 2011
So far so good. I've got the minimum required number here but I have excess though. All those not within the scope of Web development/designing don't think you are out of it all. Nothing is not needed here; all is needed. You just hang on for the phase 1 which is the website to get completed then other phases will require other programmings from different angels. At that point, I will get your hands dirty with works.

Thanks for the cooperation so far. We hope to start furthering talks by tomorrow since we've got the minimum required number. If you still want to be a part of the team, please don't hesitate to list your name. No talent is a waste. Your idea could be the perfect idea required to get the project more successful.

Happy weekend to you all!

Re: Calling On All Web Designers/developers: Redesign Of Nigeria.gov.ng by goggs(m): 8:28pm On Sep 17, 2011
very good initiative from Yawa-ti-de.

since I have no indepth web design experience (except lowly html that i have long forgotten) i will consign myself to the sideline cheering you guys on, and when its finished I will help spread the word to show the FG that that sorry thing they have as official government site is a huge joke.

Hey, I could also pass virtual late night cookies, milk and pizzas to the coders, a sort of errand boy!!!!!! cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy cheesy just joking. Well done guys!

Now what a shame on the emblem on the right hand side, of the website, stating THE PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA, HABA., wht the hell, why , it should just be the national coat of arm there not the presidency oo!!! abi na Preident get the country, or a country that is for all of us, this is a national website, not for the office of the presidency Ok,

I love this, we need more people who think like this on NairaLand.
I am into web design and I also make use of PHP and JavaScript.
This project already has enough capable hands, so I will like to join the prayer section. Let me even start: This will be successful project in Jesus Name.

@OminiPotens add Prayer Warriors and put my name as number 1.

Re: Calling On All Web Designers/developers: Redesign Of Nigeria.gov.ng by Fayimora(m): 2:09am On Sep 18, 2011
PLEASEEEEEE no one should say anything about the domain name. The domain is definitely going to be Nigeria.gov.ng(if it's successful ). However, during development, the domain name can be anything ranging from 127.0.0.1/piss to fyjdtyn.rthryn.nun.ssry. it really and completely doesn't matter

Putting the cart before the horse isin't going to help here.

Yh my actual question, did you guys plan to contact the current developer of the site? If yes then thats a very very very bad idea. If you want to develop a better site then I assure you that you don't want to even let him know! Am talking from experience so think before you reply this!
Re: Calling On All Web Designers/developers: Redesign Of Nigeria.gov.ng by Nobody: 2:16am On Sep 18, 2011
The most important thing is to get a better and safer host, like Amazon,etc.If not the security can still be compromised!When the security is guaranteed I would be in.

Is there anything that those that are not experts in the field do? For example, do we need to start liaising/lobbying with Google and others as to how we can alter/improve our search result?

@all:
To all those who have sent in their words of encouragement, thanks

2) Wow! This thread has generated 3 pages of responses. . .and we haven't even started work yet

2) Seun don do us o! Y im put this thing for home page?  I guess it is an auto script

THe above only adds to the pressure.  Oh well, somebody's gotta do it smiley

@beknown

1) I am doing this on the assumption that some bad belle will not accept the work. If that happens, we simply move on to the next thing.  The aim isn't to put people out of work but to show the world that Nigerians can do better than what we are currently seeing online

2) On page 2 of this thread or so, someone has already volunteered to hook us up directly with the source.  We will see how that goes.

@CyberG:
My fear is that if I carry the stakeholders along, they will stifle whatever innovation that we may have.  Assuming they accept the final product from us, they can modify as they see fit.  Again, the aim here is to show our country that it can be better.

@petres and others thinking alike:
I estimated 20 people but that doesn't mean that if the bucket is full, we can't buy another bucket smiley  Just throw your name in the hat.  You never know who might suffer a case of malaria and not be available on a certain day cheesy

@soreola:
Noted, about the blog.  As far as facebook, I dey fear d response.  I am already panicking about it being on NL's home page smiley

@omni:
Mr. Moderator, please email me (you have my private details wink) your phone number.  We need to talk smiley
