Ok, i dey ask because i have lived outside Nigeria for 15 years and i have never heard anyone mention genotype when it comes to having kids. Here, women give birth how they please without even getting married and i have never seen a sickler or heard of a sickler. But for naija everything na genotype.
Is it only in nigeria that people get this genotype issue?

The guy is AS, his wife to be is also AS.........Could you beleive some commeters on that thread still did not beleive in the existence of technologically selecting the genotype of a foetus??........All they just want to say to the guy is "Quit the relationship" "Go and look for AA lady" Ok you want to commit abortions right?....If she is your sister, would you like that?? And so many other stale comments under genotype year in year out.

The sickle cell wahala is more common among blacks or races with higher menalin .... its not common in white pple.....i dont know which country u dey..but its an issue in America too..but still among blacks

the west made us believe that while the world faced the malaria problem at some point.... blacks mostly "suffered" the mutation as coping mechanism to resist malaria infection....

There are conspiracy theories from some pple ..that a vaccine was developed many years ago when malaria was a terrorist around the world but was secretly tested on some continents causing the mutation and spread to subsequent generation and also the reason only very few whites have it.

It is prevelant in Nigeria and there is consciousness around it because some of us have siblings who are SS (I have an older brother who is) , relatives, classmates etc and have seen some die young, so it is imprinted in our minds.

When I lived in Kenya, I noticed Kenyans are totally unaware of this genotype stuff . The few that are SS are most likely from a particular region of Kenya that have the Luhyas and Luos. If a Kenyan is SS, he or she is most likely from these 2 tribes because it is said genetically they are closer to Nigerians....hmm, though within these tribes , names like Okwara, Oparanya, Okoro, Okonji etc is common among them

I saw the thread. I also advised the guy not to marry the girl. When i wanted to marry in nigeria last year the most common question thrown at me was whether we don check our genotype. We finally did and we are both AA. But no one talks about it here. Even Nigerians that want to marry from here never talks about it.

It's not only in Nigeria. Sickle cell is not uncommon here in the US among black Americans although awareness is not as high as you would expect it to be.

If you check, most black Americans have a high percentage of Nigerian or west African ancestry, so I'm not surprised when you it's common among the black Americans.

The Sickle Cell disease is only rampant in people with African or Caribbean backgrounds . There are few cases in Europe and America

Simple information you could have gotten on Wikipedia. There is sickle cell among African Americans as a result of many of them being from west africa where was prevalent. They also have good health care so they dont die like SS do in Nigeria.
