“My family and Alhaji were asked to visit Abuja tomorrow”. Does that not show that Alhaji is separate from my family and should go along with us in the trip?

It just means for the purpose of the trip to Abuja, Alhaji is considered a member of your travelling group, not a 'special' person.

Ditto FCT is considered a state like the 36 others, not the special part that it is for electoral purposes, as the law puts it.

No, the section of the constitution basically states that for the purpose of the election, Abuja is to be treated as an ordinary state, not the special administrative area it is.
