Bible's Most Confounding Puzzle: "If David Calls Him Lord, How Is He His Son?"

That was the question Jesus used to confound and silence His main opposition once and for all.

They comprised of Jewish scholars, teachers, doctors, and lawyers, yet none of them was able to answer the question He asked them even though it was drawn from their highly revered scriptures, despite all their studying.

Matthew 22:41-46 (KJV)

While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,
Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David.
He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,
The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?
If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?

And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.

God bless.

The same question which Jesus used to confound the Pharisees in those days however is still confounding many today.

That's because the answer wasn't revealed in subsequent verses of the Gospels, as was often the case with such sayings of Jesus which He used to confound such people.

Usually, His disciples would ask Him in private for the meaning of such sayings, and He would reveal them to the disciples, because He said it was given to them to such knowledge of the mysteries of God's kingdom, but nothing was said about this particular case in any of Gospels, even if Jesus had later revealed it to them.

Hence the question yet lies unanswered to most, including Christians, as the answers and explanations Jesus gives afterwards is usually the means they get to have such knowledge.

I myself was yet confused and confounded by the question despite having studied the Gospels about a hundred times, and i couldn't even remember hearing any preacher or anyone else either attempt to or provide the answer the question.

But being a true servant and disciple of Christ, I thought it shouldn't remain a mystery to me as it was to those Jesus confounded with the question, since it was given to us to have knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom.

However as I pondered on what the answer to the question could be, I was still struggling to get an answer, until I heard a voice say, "...He was the Son of man and Son of God" and I was amazed.

I just knew it was God because it was perfect. Nothing else to add or subtract.

I couldn't have possibly thought of such an answer by myself and without the help of the One who asked the question.

He answered the question Himself and that proved to me that God who hid these things from the wise and the prudent still reveals them to the babes of this very day. He hasn't changed His ways.

So when anyone truly becomes converted and humbles himself as a little child (babe) before God, he would still be given the knowledge of the mysteries of God's Kingdom by God.

God bless.

That's not all though as that revelation yet led to another revelation.

It was after I had been given the answer to that confounding question, that i also came to realize that the answer of the question Jesus asked them, was also the answer to the questions the same people had asked concerning Jesus, when He said He was the Son of God, because they considered such a saying of His to be blasphemous.

John 10:33

The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.

So Jesus actually hid the answer to their question about Him, in the question He asked them, using that saying of David about Him in their most revered scriptures as the basis for that.

Hence all they needed to do was to figure it out, and that would once and for all address their confusion about how He could be a man and yet claim to be the Son of God.

So that answer could also have been life-saving for them, as it would make them know the Truth and the Truth shall make them free.

But unfortunately, their hearts were waxed gross and hardened against the Truth, so the knowledge was yet hidden from them to their own peril and destruction.

May we not come so close to the Truth and yet not be able to realize it. In Jesus name!

God bless.

The pharisees actually knew the answer. That is why they were dumbfounded as any answer they offer will implicate them of their deliberate disbelief so as to continue in their corrupt system. The wisdom of God.

I agree it was the part of the Wisdom of God, however that it was meant to confound them, not to reveal the Truth to them, which if they knew would have saved them.

Matthew 13:15 (KJV)

For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

Jesus Christ actually revealed the meaning of that to his followers and to every real follower of Him,
Jesus Christ told his disciples to go an baptize people who believe """ in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit"""
But the disciples NEVER baptized anyone ""in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit"", they baptized ONLY in the NAME of the ""Lord Jesus Christ""
Does that mean they disobeyed or didn't understand what Jesus said? No
They understood who the father and the son and the holy spirit is. That He has a name,
The same question is still what islam ask today but no matter how you explain it to them or THOSE for whom the word is not meant to understand, they will not get it, that's why Jesus taught sometimes in parables,
If we can fully accept that God is able to do all things including taking any form He wants to for whatever reason He deams fit to achieve whatever aim He wants, then it will be easy to comprehend,

Simple answer:
Psalms 132:11 & Luke 1:32 because Jesus the Messiah is from the lineage of king David, his ancestor.

The answer to the question was already in the holy scriptures @Psalms 132:11 & Luke 1:32 ,many centuries before Christ was born on earth.
The Jews knew the Psalms 132:11 & other prophecies about the Messiah pointed to Jesus Christ but they preferred a political Messiah to suit their own expectations against Roman oppression.

Luke 1:32
"This One will be great and he will be called The Son of The Highest and THE LORD JEHOVAH will give to him the throne of David his Father ( ancestor)"

Peter replied Jesus:
"You are the Messiah, the son of the Living God."
The disciples already knew Jesus Christ is the Messiah, Matthew 16:16-17.

Oga, STOP this LYING on this forum.

Luke 1:32 , Matthew 16:16 & Psalms 132:11 is the straight forward answer.

Is Luke 1:32 , Matthew 16:16 & Psalms 132:11 rocket science?

Is Luke 1:32 , Matthew 16:16 & Psalms 132:11 rocket science?

Luke 16:16 is more difficult than a rocket science because majority of the people who claim to be Christians and had studied the bible for years doesn't understand what is was said there, they don't know what the Rock Jesus mentioned mean and doesn't know what the key to the kingdom of God is, and so believe sincerely that they are saved but are lost,
Psalm 132:11 is supposed to be a Sunday school lesson for children but those that claim to know it all will see it their own way, psalm 132:11 is talking about Solomon and not Jesus Christ, compare to
1 Chronicles 17:12-13

Psalms 132:11 = Matthew 1:1.

Matthew 1:1
"This is the record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham"

Psalms 132:11 is a prophetic Psalm referencing Jesus Christ.

Is Solomon the only son of King David?
No.
Matthew 1:1 & Luke 1:32 confirmed that.

Shalom.

Psalm 132:11 did not say anything about the only son of David but about the throne of David, is the throne of David the throne that Jesus take over.
Go back to Matthew 22:41-46, see what Jesus told the Jews, David's kingdom is if this world while Jesus Christ clearly said and proved that his kingdom is not of this world,
Solomon is not the only son of David but he was the one who took over that thronw when he died, to understand the bible is not by force, it needs the direction of the holy spirit and the holy spirit doesn't dwell in a proud body, God hates pride, ask God for wisdom, and God will open your eyes, if it's your pastor who is telling you that that verse is referring to Jesus, he doesn't know the bible but if it wasn't him, you may want to seek his opinion,
BTW seems you don't even know who Jesus Christ is, every TRUE Christian knows but like I said, there are millions who sincerely believe that they know but don't
