Although there are still some Europeans who wrote the truth despite the widespread misconceptions about Benin, the benins did once take part in a gesture whereby they provided workers for the Portuguese in exchange for their good friendship to work as laborers in the Portuguese colony of Sao Tome and Principe. However, they only did this for the Portuguese and never for any other European country. the relationship between benin and Portuguese lasted for 200yrs from the 1400 to 1600, tho this gesture by the benins to the Portuguese never lasted that long before the benins ended it on the terms of morality the benins believed the souls of the people gifted without the people approval could bring bad omen to their land The Benins and the British had a rift not because the British intended to end slavery as they made us believe, the act already being a taboo in Benin, but rather to gain control of palm oil, and in 1700 Oba Adolo made a decree to officially punish Benin merchant who engaged in the act of slave trading illegal.
Before the arrival of the first Europeans, the Portuguese, the benins controlled a large area of territories. The Portuguese refused to sell benin weapons on the grounds that it was a pagan nation, so benin never gained power as a result of Europeans or her trade with Europe merchants. not until the arrival of the Dutch in the 1600 who were willingly to exchange guns with benins for Benin local goods like pepper, ivory tusk, clothes, local wine, although the benin employed the help of European military assistance against her enemies in few occasions, the benins were wealthy because they were economically independent even when the European decided to sanction benin trades they saw the benin weren't really affected the only way to stop benin was to attack it to get full control of the Niger area now called Nigeria
