My first job was with a startup. Children of rich nigerians and politicians . They gambled company funds alot. First class tickets, drivers, company cars and the like. I used their internet to search for jobs elsewhere as i say no future for myself there hahaha. Good pay but no one to learn from.

It depends on your experience. $500 - $10k. Remote work is the deal these days. And if you have value to offer, you definitely can reasonably determine how much you want to be paid.
10K USD, are you for real... How many people do you know earning that ??, What is the average earnings of remote worker In Africa??
Dis one wey dem dey cut jobs left and right, dem come ship those jobs overseas.

For a startup?
Most times if the contracts is delayed your pay will be delayed as well.
They oftentimes survive on the contract or business they see, once the business is slow, there is problem

It's not about the average. It's more about you.
If you have solid value, you can earn more than 10k USD a month....it's all about the individual.

Joined a Logistics startup during the End Sarz era. Pay was cool. Business plan was perfect.
We weren't making sales because the managing director was so obsessed with the ideology of the business and didn't treat the business as a business. We weren't making sales. Resigned the 5th month when they delayed salary for some few days. Delay of Salary is the first sign a business is about to go burst. Startups are cool. And you'll get to enjoy privileges if it booms.

Only downside is chances of going burst is very high.

Start up is scam. Especially if it's family business.

Once you build the company to a pedestal, they won't even let you know when they will employ someone and later inform you they're making the job easier for you meanwhile you will be the one training the new staff. After that they push you away.

Did one with a Husband and Wife coy. Business was running fine on perfect plan. From Manager I became a secretary then a Marketer, move to being a driver as well as consultant.

After 3 months I demanded a raise. Na so them sack me grin. Employ 4 person's once. 3 months later the company sold off and shut down.

Run for your life unless you don t have option.

Always get sweet_mouthed mouth. They delay salary when ther5 is no cash flow. No time frame to close sometimes and they love eye service. When money or contracts come and you remind them of outstation or any agreed benefit, they gets annoy. They will want you to feel like share holder and all na wash.

When the company grows and they starts bringing new people and sometimes pay them higher than you. To them, there is nothing special about you again

It usually like that, especially at early stage startups. Do you have equity or any significant financial rewards?

There's usually pros and cons of working at a startup. If you plan to launch a startup in the future. You get to do a lot, learn a lot, be there through key stages and apply that learnings when starting your own venture.

The vague job description also mean you potentially could define your scope of work or direction. Since you are literally doing everything for the first time, it is whatever you call it.

If you are experiencing stress in a startup environment, especially when you have no clear job description and are asked to handle multiple tasks. You can consider the following
- communicate your concerns
- prioritize as much as possible
- set boundaries early on. Don't work weekends or till 11pm
- develop your own structure
- use tech to automate your tasks and don't tell them about it. So they ask you to write 10 letters, you already have a template for it and get it done in 5 mins. But yourself extra time and tell them it will take 1 day
- if you still can't cope. Dust your resume and start job search on the side..

Goodluck

I really don't know how I feel because this undefined role is seriously messing with my mental health.

A part of me wants to take on this challenge but I might just resolve to your last advice. Thank you.

Never in my life...

They have no organogram.

They have no career ladder.

Your appraisal/promotion is linked to eye service.

If you leave them for a structured company, you would be shortchaged most times as the new firm cannot accurately read your level and worth. So they will most likely throw you to entry level even after "years of experience".

Some of them intentionally run like startups for a long time. Masters at emotionally blackmailing staff.

Honestly. Plus a toxic work environment and low pay.
You're very correct about companies that run like a start up for a long time.
There is no growth because of high staff turn over, and you'll work being demotivated most of the time cos of frustration.

This is especially true for older companies still running like startups. Deep management problem. High turnover etc.

True
Toxic work environment. Low pay,
High staff turnover Leading to more responsibilities for the rest of the staff, staff emotional blackmail, and lots more.

I totally agree with you.
I once worked for one just after the corona, for a year and they did not pay salaries.
After i wrote them through a lawyer they moved out to a new location, and I've not seen them again.
Just like that my time and money can't be recovered

For lower pay of course.

However, some folks still earn more than 10k USD a month from Nigeria.

If there are folks like that, our question must be...how do I position myself to be that kind of person?

If some folks can legitimately earn that from here, you can too. It's all about how much value you can churn out.

Lol, you still don't get it, it there economy and they control things, there maybe folks who earn 10K USD like you said but they are in the minority (that for sure) and no matter how much people in the developing world position themselves for bigger pay it not gonna happen (it has to be in the confine of what they can or want to do).

You are still coming back to my earliest point.
By the way, one of the reasons they ship the jobs down here is because of the lower pay. They get to spend less while getting the job done.

The question again is....are there people in this Nigeria earning more than 10k USD remotely a month?

If they can earn it, you can too....forget what statistics say. What value are you willing to offer....

Let me share a quick example...if for example you are a remote sales strategist for a company in Germany. While working, you get an idea you propose to the team and it was accepted.

It was implemented as you instructed to the letter and boom....the company makes about 8.5m USD in 9 months....if you were earning less than 5k USD a month and demand a raise to 12-15k, would that be unfair to them or you? Na value we dey talk about here....real value
