Tickered with the lighting to get this photo-realistic as much as possible.

Hopefully this looks real enough for a 3D scene grin

Fight previz for a personal 3D project.
Re: My 3D animation Journey 2023 - 2024 by akinolaa76: 12:17am On Sep 29, 2023
I am inspired to write this night and maybe this will inspire someone.

Well, all the recent videos posted here in this thread have been the several tests and practices towards achieving something special with my personal project. I have waited over two years to actually feel like being ready to do something special with it. It is a project I have announced here on nairaland before but I paused it due to the low confidence I had in my skill despite having enough to pull it off at the time. But the wait is even better as my skills have improved tremendously over those two years.

Over the last five years however, I have acquired the following skills:
1. Filmmaking (cinematography and directing).
2. 3D Animation (both keyframing and motion capturing).
3. Motion Capturing (acting and directing).
4. I am proficient in 8 softwares (Four 3D softwares, two video editing softwares, one photo editing software and one sound editing softwares), my level of proficiency differs though as I mostly only focus on what I need those softwares to achieve and not necessarily learning everything the softwares can do. Three of these softwares were learnt this year only.

I never had a teacher nor been to school to learn any of these. I have two degrees both in Nigeria and the UK, yet none of these skills have any bearing on my degrees. In fact, if any of you can go back to my earliest posts about animations on nairaland, you can see where I started from. From that person who posted a crappy animated short. My go to places are Youtube and google. With those two, you can learn anything in the world without spending a dime (well except data sha).

Having completed the animation of a 3D feature length movie titled The Lost Treasure (Details and demo to be found here https://www.thelosttreasurefilm.com/) in May 2021, I decided to test all these skills I have acquired on my personal project as it seem that is what is missing. The Lost Treasure is an hour long feature length 3D animated movie. All characters, scenes and animations were done by me right in my living room. The experience did not just inspire me but I realised the strength of what I carry in my head.

That said, you all will be seeing a lot of this personal short movie soon enough. The project is about 60% done. All scenes and characters are ready. I am currently working on the previz of the sequences to ascertain what motion assets I have and how much of motion capturing I need to do for the characters. There will be three main characters and I will be doing all their voiceovers and you will never guessed in a million years that these voice overs were done by just one person. Wait for it! grin

This 3D animated short promises to change your ideas about what just one person can achieve when it comes to 3D animations. If you are reading this and you seem stuck with whatever skill youre learning, remember that people do not necessarily need to see the little progress you are making everyday. The validation of your progress you need is you going to bed at night and knowing you have added something to your skill for that day. It is a gradual process that will pay off.

Now, if you are into 3D and wishes to connect, please send me a mail and I will sure reply you with my number or if you can find my number here on nairaland somewhere. I have had the privilege to connect with a lot people who are into 3D from here and I have in fact formed great bonds and friendships.

This is the teaser poster for my 3D animated movie The Legend of Fijabi.

After three years of conceptualising this project, the project is finally having some flesh as production of the first episode has gone really far. The wait was worth it. Skill has improved tremendously since the first time it was conceptualised and its evolution is thrilling. I will release the teaser before the week runs out then followed by the trailer in about a month when the production of the first episode is almost completed and the second episode underway, hopefully.

Watch out for this space.

Good day sir. I am really inspired by your write-up, especially how you started from the scratch. Anyway, I would love to know the name of the eight software you learned in the past 5 years.

1. iClone
2. Character Creator
3. Filmora
4. Photoshop
5. Unreal Engine
6. PremierPro
7. Substance Painter
8. Audacity

Other ones I have one thing or another to go to include: Blender, AfterEffects and Daz Studio

Thank you reaching out. I learnt number 1 to 4 simultaneously at the beginning. I started with these as they afforded me the opportunity to focus solely on animations and filmmaking (without going through the rigours of modelling). I then picked up 5, 6 and 7 simultaneously as they are a major upgrade to what I already know. Unreal engine (for cinematics) for example relies on realtime animation and realtime rendering which makes it really easy to use if you know how to use iClone.

If you have further questions, I will be happy to answer.

Thank you sir. I have a few questions to ask.
i. What specifications does a system require for effective functionality of the software listed ?
ii. Can one get those software for free?
iii. Are the tutorials available online (from beginner to advance level)?

i. This is opinionated as the answer depend mainly on your budget. But pretty much a decent GPU 6gb VRAM minimum should be averagely ok at least for a start.

ii. The only two free softwares on that list are UnrealEngine and Audacity. The rest are not anyway free.

iii. Absolutely. Youtube is a University of its own.

A good gaming system.... Nvidia GPU with 4 or 8gbVRAM, 16 or 32gbRAM, 10th , 11th or 12th generation Intel Processor, an SSD.

These are just suggestions. The bigger it is the better.

Here is a close up image of the headrig I used at the end of my last video to do the face mocap.

I made the rig myself using only 4 items.... Bike (bicycle)/skateboard helmet, adhesive mount for gopro cameras, extended arm mount for gopros, and universal phone holder mount. All were bought online.
And attached to the rig is an iphone12 mini (because of it light weight). But basically, you can use this with any good iphone from iphone X juat that you may need to add a counterweight at the back as those phone are heavy and will pull your head from the front.
The head rig weighed less than 1kg and is durable to a good extent.

The cheapest headrig for face mocap that is out there cost about 200$ which is still a bit pricey for indie creators. However, this only cost a quarter of that and it is very durable.

I made a video when I was making it and will be posting that in the coming days.

**INFORMATION**
If anybody would be interested in learning 3D character animation and filmmaking from me free of charge (no string attached and no catch). I will give room for one or two persons after series of interviews (or more if possible). I detest time wasters. And I really do not have to do this.

But the first and most important requirement is to already have a gaming computer of your own.

Quote this message if you do. If people show interest, I will give the next directive.
