Some jobs don't give room for public holidays. You should understand a supermarket opens regardless, eateries must open...

What most employees will not reveal is how they get paid to work overtime.

They have shifts also.

Don't generalise abeg.

Besides, employee only becomes a modern slave if he is underpaid or paid irregularly.

💯

If you want to enjoy public holidays, get a government job! 😏

Even on the government job, essential services’ workers are still made to work on public holidays.
Bank sef, people wey dey manage the ATM and network have to somehow be on ground. 🤧

Not forgetting, when you have your personal business, you can allow your staff ALL the public holidays… 😁😊
Leave them. So during public holidays malls, eateries, recreation centre's, petrol station should all close up. Nepa staffs too, doctors, all going on public holidays
They just adopt modern slavery for oyibo and start using it without knowing the true meaning

Nigeria is sooo backwards abeg. In abroad if you open your store especially the big stores on a bank holiday you be paid a double per hour for working that day. Not only stores even other organisations. Anything that will take you to work on a bank holiday is double of your hourly pay.

That's because there are no well enforced labor laws to protect the rights of workers in Nigeria!

This ought to form the key roles and responsibilities of the Legislative arm of our government... But, they would rather collect millions to sit, sleep, and approve stupid loans!

Not giving public holidays to employees are rampant nowadays especially private companies like supermarkets, fuel stations, E-commerce etc. Working from Monday to Saturday/Sunday and when everybody is at home for the holidays, you don't have any choice than to still go to work. Is this slavery or we don't have good leadership to fight for their people.
So where do you want the rest of us to buy fuel and provisions on public holidays if you follow us dey holiday? grin

For a business like supermarket, the employees can resume work around 4pm.

Or they can rotate the Holliday.

If it's 1 day holiday, some come in the morning and like by 12. Some come by 12 and leave by 6pm.
Another come by ......

Omo e no work o.

Ok how about another idea?

Since we have like 20 Holliday days in a year, they can rotate it. Some for new years day, the next set for Muslim holiday, the next for children's day etc.

And ofcos for the religious holidays, christians Shud sub for Muslims and vice versa.

Na wetin I fit reason for now be that, I want ho chop.

Depends on the nature of the jobs.

There are multinationals in the FMCG sector that can't shut down their systems because of 1 day holiday, some basically shut down production for the year only around December.

There are also government agencies that generally do not have holidays.

Let's not even talk of essential services.

For those that are working in essential places like filling station, supermarket, eatery and pharmacy,I think there work should be on shift, so there won’t be any off during the holidays except your off day fall on holiday period.

If to work don tire you go home

Many people are wishing to be in your position and you dey find holiday to go carry olosho

It is this kind mentality that allow employees to be treated like slaves ... people with no self respect ... people who will never fight for any human rights but will suffer and smile .... the type of men that will have employers beating their wives ... sexually assaulting them ... and tell them to endure because jobs are hard to get .... the type of men that employers would slap and they would collect steady until they can't bear it no more or find another job ..... slave mentality.
Public holidays government offices are closed ....any other business can choose to remain open or close also. The labour law should have that employees working on that day be paid extra .... usually time and a half pay .... instead of N2000 for that day.... N3000 minimum. If it is in the law .... and employers do so is another story.

Shatap.

By law, nobody can compel you to work on a public holiday.

However, you may have signed that away when you endorsed your contract where it was stated that you will have to work some public holidays.

Usually, such days are compensated for by being paid overtime and/or swapping a regular day for leave.

You raised a good point. Some Nigerian employers are indeed slave masters, and this is one of the reasons they don’t want their employees to join any workforce union.

A good employer must give extra pay in the form of overtime to those employees who work on public holidays.

Our government doesn't care, and this is the reason why employers can treat employees any way they want without any consequences.

Even though we are aware that certain companies are built to run 7 days a week or around-the-clock for 24/7, at the very least, compensate your staff with extra pay for working on holidays by giving them overtime pay.

An essential business like Pharmacy, Hospital, Supermarket can't just shut down businesses because of public holidays.
is it ok to accept work on Saturdays?
Re: Is Not Giving Employees Public Holidays Modern Slavery? by GboyegaD(m): 11:38am On May 27, 2023
Some businesses run 365days a year thus, they may not give holidays when you are on duty on that day however, they should pay you for such holidays. My understanding is that on such holidays, those who work either on the day, the day before, or the day after gets 2 times their regular wage for national holidays and 1.5 times their regular wage for state holidays.

Well, in developed nations, it is optional and comes with extra pay.

Can't say the same here in Nigeria... Most places, it is compulsory!

If it is a shopping mall, hotel or recreational outlet there is no need for holiday because that is their peak season. But the workers could be given bonus for working on holidays

It is o. Where I work, I work everyday except Sundays. Public holidays doesn't concern us and we open by 7 30am and close by 8.00/8.30pm, no off day too. It wasn't part of our initial agreement.

A work that has an offer letter where the terms and conditions including working hours are stated

Some people work offshore 2 weeks in 2 weeks off. Oh before u say that's flexing, remember it's 12hrs a day, non stop. No public holidays, no weekends etc.

Private businesses are set up for profits and some of these businesses have the highest patronage during non work hours or work days
