Then i lack the sense

A Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) is a company that does not own a mobile spectrum license but sells mobile services under its brand name using the network of a licensed mobile operator.

Mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) lease wireless telephone and data service from the major cellular carriers

As you can see in the infographic below, an MVNO does not have a Base station (mast) in its infrastructure. Nobi everything be right or insults. It is what I do for a living, working for an MVNO. I hope you now have a better understanding of how MVNOs work

I wouldn’t say so. It’s the way Btel is trying to market themselves. They are not being fully factual about the service they provide. Rather trying to market themselves as rivals to the big telcos when in fact they are working with and for them.

So I will talk from my experience working for one. We don’t sell sims of any kind. We have leveraged in open source telecommunications software to provide voice and sms communication. For data, we provide internet connectivity using a combination of radio masts and Wi-Fi. Primary reason for providing the internet is so that our business customers have reliable access to our voice offering. As far as I know, it’s not usual for MVNOs to provide data and sims.

I don’t dispute your personal experience working for mvnos. Of course all of what you said does explain how mvno operates. But all of these don’t simplify it to the ordinary person. What the ordinary person wants to know are the following;

1. Am I getting a private number? (Sim)

2. Am I going to access voice call facility (airtime)

3. Do I get internet connectivity (data)

How all these come about is not his concern. Like I said, the query I responded to ask to simplify the article not summarize it. Except of course what I have said cannot be derived from the article up there, then please do simplify it for me.

I will answer by saying a categorical yes to one and two and a “possibly yes” to three. Just that number one above may no be exclusively through SIMS (electronic or physical). But yes I get your point at simplifying the technical language behind how the regular user would be able to access the service

I’m in Naija o. So if you are asking about the rains, I don’t like them. I’m suffering from allergies a lot more now due to damp, and my ability to generate electricity from solar is diminished

oh sorry about that bro. I like the cold not sassso much or the rains. I don’t have any allergies too so that help. Are you strictly on solar?

I hate the rains because it messes up the roads.

Regarding solar, I won’t say I’m exclusively on solar. But I’ve got a setup that ensures I never have a blackout. Solar, NEPA and gen as last resort. I literally have to turn on my gen just to keep it “warm” . Otherwise I can go for months using only NEPA and Solar

that’s a great setup. Very cost efficient in the long term while serving your needs in the present.

This is an MVNO that will piggyback off one of the major carriers such as GLO, MTN or so. So yes, they will make the market more competitive, as they will have their own plans, sim card, etc. For example some MVNO's in the US are Consumer cellular, Metro, Mint Mobile, etc. In the UK Virgin, Lebara, Tesco, giffgaff, Lycamobile, etc. are all MVNOs
I see people mention that they will not have their own sim cards, etc. That's totally false!

It wasn’t “people” it was me. I like to be direct when addressing points. There are already MVNOs before Btel. Those don’t sell sims. I don’t expect Btel to sell either

Lol! They are not an MNO (mobile network operator) like MTN and Co. There a an MVNO (mobile Virtual network operator). In simple English, they provide those telephony service using your existing data subscription. There ride "over-the-top" of existing MNOs. Without a data connection, you cannot use their service
Oh!

Thank you for the information boss

But according to the article

Based on the licensing framework for the establishment of MVNO in Nigeria, a Tier 2 license holder can own and issues its SIM; own and operate its own Intelligent network and own and Operate EIR/HLR/AUC/HSS

NCC framework state, “A Virtual Operator (VO) within this tier assumes more control of the value chain which allows it to significantly differentiate itself from its host. The VO does not have Core Switching and Interconnect capabilities but can set up its own Intelligent Network (IN) to provide its own IN services to the customer.

“It can own more of the customer segment than Tier-1 operators with the capacity of establishing its own Home Subscriber Register or Authentication centre, Equipment Identity Register, and Home Location Register, if it desires to."

So are you saying the bolded is wrong

It’s not wrong. But as practiced in Nigeria, no MNO will allow an MVNO to sell SIM and encroach on their space
