Message: Avoid countries with a large population of Nigerian Immigrants (except the US).

This isn’t a diatribe against my fellow countrymen. It is the new truth. And here’s why:

1. You and the over one million Nigerian immigrants in the west will have to hustle for the same opportunities. Foreign employers will invariably pit one Nigerian against another during the hiring process. Only the best talents will win. And you, the not-so-skilled one, will have to find better luck elsewhere. But while a little competition is healthy, a protracted period of lack and being broke in a foreign land is no joke.

2. Our infamy (as fraudsters, drug lords, downright dishonest folks) precedes us as Nigerians. Maybe the math doesn’t add up; I’ve often noticed, while vacationing across Euro-Asia, that countries sparsely populated with Nigerian immigrants have no biases against us. Their ignorance is our bliss. And how is this helpful? You can easily find jobs, get legal paperwork done without the usual profiling. Need I say more?

3. Path to PR/ Citizenship. There’s a long waiting line in our usual go-to countries. Why? You’re not the only one who wants the good stuff. Wale, who arrived last week, is going toe to toe with you who’s been there for a decade.

4. Quality of jobs is another salient point. Because all the other “prestigious” jobs aren’t taken up by other foreign expatriates, you get to pick and choose. Not everyone’s cut out to be a doctor or a nurse. But you could easily find other good jobs that don’t involve working long arduous hours.

5. Please don’t bring the currency argument here. You don’t spend naira in, for instance, the UK. Stop the conversion. Stop it!

PS: From the start, I mentioned that the US was an exception to my opinion. Why? Economically, it is the only nation on earth with the capacity to nurture immigrants and lead them to financial success. Hey, the [new] American Dream is a real thing.

Will they hear word?

The west needs STEM people and not lawyers or accountants. They need essential commodity producers and essential service rendered according to Ephesians 4:28 and not musicians or artists.
They need industrial machines turning and firing. That's what drives the GDP up and prices down. The multiplicative effect means lower prices and higher supply gives more people access to services and goods. That's why they can average £50k in welfare and be telling us to cancel subsidy.
California alone is more productive than the giant of Africa and that connotes midget status for Africa as a whole.

For 1, this is just not true. Nigerians don't even leave their country like Asians who leave for the west in their droves. If you want to leave Nigeria, go to a country with opportunities.

When there are enough opportunities to go round, where you come from becomes the most insignificant employment factor, especially in countries that welcome hardworking immigrants.

the west needs accountants specifically auditors . UK audit firms like kpmg, bdo, pwc have been hiring auditors and tax people from Nigeria. Same with USA and Australia. Canada firms has also been accepting those with pr and previous experience in Nigeria. So what you are saying is not entirely true.

At OP, where you go put Canada In my department in a foreign bank here in Canada over 30 Nigerians dey my unit, in other banks too Nigerians, Chinese and Indians dominate. White people no want the jobs. Go to tech companies like ViSA, Microsoft, amazon and co. Nigerians yapa there. If it medicine and nursing we yapa there. Engineering nko we still yapa there. Project management nko same. Even the lawyers are getting jobs as legal secretaries, assistants while they write their bar exams. Your analogy no follow 🤣. There are different types of japa too, permanent residency, work permits, study visa, visit visa etc

is UK not in Europe , what of the nurses, IT, doctors and accountants that have gone recently or those born there . In the places you are talking about like German, Finland and co, one there is language barrier, two many of the Nigerians there never had a sellable skill to begin with . Nothing stops them from learning skilled work like electricians, plumbing etc. Or going to upskill in lucrative fields. I have friends in Germany who learnt IT and are currently working in the field. Last last everyone has their reason for Japa, some are happy with those jobs you listed

I don't think you've been in Europe my guy. There's a ceiling related to skin colour. It's very difficult working in a white collar profession and your qualifications or experience don't matter.

The Indians and Chinese do well because they pool resources together and start their own business so the glass ceiling doesn't matter

i lived in Uk from 2005 to 2008. You probably still dey roll tire then. My mum was a nurse there for 9 years. I have cousins, siblings, friends there etc. All these una imaginary skin colour ehn. My own brother in the UK was given a BMW in this first job many years ago as company Car. Maybe he identifies as white 🤣. You are more likely to get a job as a minority these days than 10 years ago. Companies are trying to hard to meet diversity and inclusion quotas. If una like keep complaining and dont go and get the required skills.

Your ancedotal account is bullshit. Why do you think France was burning just the other day? There's no good opportunity for ethnic minorities in Europe. Maybe in America, but not Europe. FYI, I studied in London (KCL) in 2010-2011 so I know first hand what I'm talking about.

This lady was born in the UK, infact her grandparents came over with the Windrush generation in the 1950s. Yet she left the UK and found business success in Africa (Gambia)

are there no blacks in tech, medicine, nursing One of my childhood friends in that uk is a chef, another one a fitness instructor that charges per hour and also doing real estate sales. Another one is in tech despite having a non tech background.. There are opportunities if you refuse to take them or position yourself. Thats on you.

You may say that intending immigrants should not lose guard and be careful amongst their countrymen, but to say that they should not move there because their countrymen are there already doesn't make any sense.

You may hear lots of bad news about Nigerians in the diaspora, but the biggest helper of Nigerians abroad are fellow Nigerians. Just be vigilant, that's the point.

He will keep complaining. However, it is not everywhere in Europe that people should target if they want career advancement. In the age of diversity and inclusion, blacks have a greater chance of getting good jobs. The major difference between second-generation black immigrants and recent immigrants is their mentality. The latter come with a "we die here" and "it is a do or die affair" mentality. That is why they tend to outbid/outcompete the second generation in those countries.

AllKnowing, Rather than say avoid countries with too many Nigerians, I say avoid countries with a lax immigration system that takes any Tom, Dick and Harry. When analysing immigrants' successes, always look at the path of migration. Someone who migrated via an illegal route and took many years to settle will have a different path from someone who entered via work visa with superior skills.

Lastly, as a black African, if you want a place where you will make plenty of money and succeed professionally without hindrance or a glass ceiling, head to the US. The existing black population and the size of the economy make it the best place to thrive as a black person.
