Everybody in Nigeria is familiar with the fact that Southeast and south South region is a single political bloc ie SE/SS. Also the North East and North West zones also forms a single political bloc often expressed as ' core north'.

Since independence, our Yoruba southwest region has remained a stand alone, lonely region in the Nigerian political space. I say this with evidence. This is so sad despite our decades long bridge building adventures.

Let us check voting pattern which the most credible way of assessing region affinity and alignment. Delta and Edo which were once part of the western region always vote in a different direction from the south west during election while even Kwara always vote with the north.

Conversely, south South states once part of the old eastern region has maintained same voting pattern with Ibos through ages. Any political party popular in South east ends up popular in South South as well, including Benue State

Northeast states also vote in line with Northwest showing some sort of affinity.

But in our case, neighbouring states don't share our sentiment like other major tribes.
This should be disturbing to every omoluabi. Is it that we are not playing our cards right? Why are we so lonely and rejected?

In 1999 for instance, APP regarded as Hausa fulani party, and an offshoot of NPC cleared all northeast and Northwest (core north)

PDP regarded as and Ibo party and an offshoot of NCNC cleared SE/SS and Benue

The AD regarded as a Yoruba party and an offshoot of AG couldn't go beyond the single southwest region. Infact Kwara voted for APP in 1999 and has continue to vote contrary to southwest pattern. The only reason APC is winning in Kwara is because of the CPC factor.

This is not so with Rivers, crossrivers, Akwa Ibom Bayelsa and even Benue. They always vote with Ibos. Even Delta/ Edo once part of western region voted for Ibo lead PDP in 1999 and still do so.

The most shocking being two months old labour party foray into presidential bid. A party we Yorubas call IPOB Ibo party. They managed to clear SE/SS and Benue.

Our southwest Yoruba region has no friends.
Regional affinity is what will decide the future of this country and not political patronage. We need a change of attitude to endear ourselves to our neighbors, at least.

I have to agree with the op. Yoruba can be playing spoiler for the for old Eastern region but when op's point will become clear is if it comes to separation. Voting pattern will matter and voting blocs will likely form national boundaries. That is why Yorubas are resisting Biafra with all their might.

Friendship and interest are inseparable. Friends are allies because they share common interest. Someone can help you not because he cares for you but because he wants to spite another. Kwara State has set the pace for Yoruba-Fulani just like Hausa-Fulani. You can still merge with NW/NE to form a force.

In 1999, Hausa Fulani North supported for Yorubas to represent the two major political parties and choose the one they felt more comfortable with in Obasanjo not because they loved Yorubas but because they saw his choice as strategic.

In 2015, they partnered with Tinubu and gave South West vice presidential position to save their political relevance in Nigeria not because they love the Yorubas but they saw it as strategic.

In 2023, they partnered with Tinubu again by giving him half their votes to protect the image and unity of Nigeria not because they loved Tinubu but it's strategic planning.

Politics is not about friendship.
