She was only served her own stew.
She ought to have channel her discovery of infraction to the right channel by notifying the appropriate Agencies and Authority including the company.
Until they failed to recall the product and compensate for the inconveniences before she can drag them online.
Note it's also subject to others consumers with similar complaint.
Calling other competitors product brand is a NO!
Everything is not social media cruise this is an official matter.

You are wrong. She doesn’t need to.
Every manufacturer holds that duty of care towards their consumers.

See this popular case of Donoghue v Stevenson [1932].

If she could prove that the tomatoes paste company didn’t exercise care towards her by releasing such product into the market, the company could be held liable.

Great, now imagine that lady had said your hand was white because you probably do drugs....

Get it?
I get your point.
As per what that lady said, she said what she has in her mind was as low as craw craw. Obviously to make me take it seriously. She knew it was dry pealing skin on my elbow.
Furthermore, below is what the lady arrested said, and no where did I notice her making accusations against the company relevant to you suggesting if my schoolmate had said my elbow was dry because I probably do drugs.
What she said was that it seem to sugary.
I quote her,

"The lady in question, Egodi Jnr, made a post on Facebook on September 17, 2023, where she said she tasted too much sugar in the tin tomato she bought, a product of Erisco Foods.

“I went to buy tin tomatoes yesterday (September 16) that I will use to make stew; I didn’t see Gino and Sonia, so I decided to buy this one,” she wrote.

“When I opened it, I decided to taste it omo! Sugar is just too much! Haaa biko let me know if you have used this Tin tomato before because this is an ike gwuru situation!”

As per the "Ike gwuru" statement which I did not understand as I do not speak igbo and which is the strange word that could be thought to be condescending. I checked it up on translator.
It means an exhausting situation.

Are you people okay?

Everyone has a right to publicly review a product they purchased whether positively or negatively.

I can’t wrap my head around the fact that some people think it’s okay to arrest someone for a negative review

The question is simple, why post on Facebook when there are agencies where she should have lodged her complaint if she had a genuine claim.
Lesson: not everything is for social media, always think before you go public.

What's this rubbish about harassing and intimidating consumers who make reviews about products?

The owners of these small companies don dey mad?

The Consumer Protection Agency should make a strong example with these rogues!

No be only erisco.
What will go wrong if you make constructive criticism? You can't just be posting like a mad man because you have free internet/social media access to bring down a business others have laboured with sweat and blood to build.
Nigerian youth just post recklessly in the name of chasing clout. No one will watch you crumble their hard work with your few seconds of online insanity.

Nothing wrong in what she did. You put your product out in the market, people have the freedom to make their observations, and in public. She made it on her personal fb. Her observation was not even defaming.
What business has efc got to do with this if not that "connections" may have been used to get her arrested.
Great to see the consumer protection organization has taken the matter up.
All that company should have done was respond to her post, inform her that they were looking into it and therein make adjustments to their recipe if necessary.
Kindly read my earlier post on this thread about my experience with the erisco paste.
She probably could cashout legal wise from efc, also if proven the company instigated a wrongfully arrest, it is likely the company might be joined in the law lawsuit.

In a civilized nation companies try to solicit reviews from all customers, good or bad reviews. People supporting this same bullying attitude from the company will still want to travel to more civilized nations and be offering their bad reviews freely to any product in that civilized nation.

Think constructively in these times in Nigeria because the old ways of thinking in Nigeria, intimidation, fear and bullying, has to stop.

You can see, It is open to interpretation and you can also see that some people have interpreted it as “killing”.

She obviously maligned the company on purpose, thinking she is smart. If Erisco gets a good lawyer (which i hope they do), she won’t get away with jack-shit.

I remember that year, indomie was targeted cuz competition didn’t know how to push it out of the market. One of their executives had to make a video cry and eating it raw just to prove there is no poison it in.

Some Nigerians are wicked, shameful people. If you have a problem with the product why not get your message to authorities undecided.

Tomatoe companies add sugar if you don't know.
It's no secret. Tomatoe don't taste sweet at all. More than 50% of what you buy is not sugar.
Foreign tomatoe companies use beetroot for puree. Nigerian in diaspora vloggers has been analysing this with proof yrs ago. I didn't even know.

All mega products you use have reviews if online by popular reviewers whether good or bad.
Nigerians should grow up.

The company should prove themselves to the public, not her.

Those reviews are always welcomed

As much as the Consumer can always be right, the Manufacturers should equally be protected from sponsored & careless malicious defamation of their products.Customers can complain but certainly not through the Social Media..What if the Product conforms with acceptable standard? That your taste board feels higher concentration of sugar doesn't mean others will feel same.

Guy, how did you conclude that it's sponsored? It's a product review and it should be looked into! By the time the company is forced to pay damages, unna go know. The minimum is libel.
She has to show evidence of people killed by the product.
Secondly, if there is no sugar in the ingredients of the product, then she has to demonstrate where she found sugar and also, what the economic and financial implications of her statement is on the business.
There is freedom of speech, but it has its limit.
I hope her at her has money sha because the damages or out of court settlement will be beautiful

What you are suggesting is a very dangerous path - a descent into dictatorship, where people are arrested and locked up for voicing their opinions. This is only an opinion about a product, what then happens if you voice your opinion against the chairman itself? What about political office holders, what happens if you voice a negative opinion against a sitting governor or a sitting first lady? The person should be arrested, beaten and locked up for years?
It seems lots of Nigerians don't know the meaning of democracy and democratic governance. There is supposed to be freedom of expression and opinion under such system of governance, so unless it could be proven that the made the product review with malicious intent, she conmited no crime under the law. Even if she did it for some personal vendetta or gains, the case would be a civil case and not a criminal one that would warrant arrest and transfer to Abuja.

I am shocked some people are supporting this gross abuse of power on a defenseless lady.

She should not even be invited for questioning because its not a criminal offence. If the company felt its reputation had been damaged, the worst they can do is sue her to court. Afterall, they have a legal department, the police should not have had a role in this.

She is not a defenseless lady. If you live in glass house, don't throw stone. Even in Nigeria, if you cant afford a lawyer, the State DPP provides you a lawyer. If Erisco legal team proved shes a flight risk, she might be remanded. The question is what did her legal team do? I am sure she was probably served or invited for questioning and probably ignored or try to evade, before she had to be picked up.
Her post is online, not in Lagos or wherever she resides. If Erisco HQ is based in Abuja and they filed in Abuja, she will be taken to the said Abuja.

You are only making all these statements based on social media sentiments.

She might have been unable to perfect her bail conditions, and hence remanded in custody. There is nobody holding her incommunicado. If she has been charged to court by the police, she will be availed the option to bail pending the case. If she cant meet bail conditions, she will be held in custody LIKE EVERY OTHER PERSON.

You can voice your opinion all you like, but you cannot destroy another person or business with your opinion and expect people to allow you a free pass.

Imagine if her opinion (or product review as you all call it) leads to boycott of Erisco products, and the company goes bankrupt because its unable to meet its financial obligations to staff, vendors, banks, investors etc

Erisco is exercising its full rights under a democratic system, which you dont seem to understand. She has a right to go on FB and spread unfounded information, and Erisco has a right to legally go after her claims since they know those claims are false.
If the product is sent to a Lab and a food tech scientist comes back with a report there is no sugar in the product, she has the onus to prove there is sugar in the product.
She also said the products have killed people; she has the onus to prove that there are indeed people (provide a list of names and dates) thats have been killed by the product.

The only dangerous path is people thinking social media is their beer parlor gathering and can say anything they want. She made a review filled with false information and claimed the product killed people. That is ALL the proof of malicious intent Erisco needs. Even if its a review she made (I wonder who sent her), she cant make a negative and damning review based on falsehood and say there was no malice.

Social media and or free speech or personal opinion CANNOT REPLACE going after people for LIBEL, when it has the potential to harm another or destroy a business entity.

There is no dictatorship in this matter. She beat the drum, she should tie wrapper and dance to the beats.
