I'm 189cm tall, fresh out NYSC and I've recently began working my first 9-5 job in Lagos and inorder to cut costs, I've had to opt for public transportation and I've found that the leg room is never enough in both those yellow buses and the BRT. I'm tired of folding like jeans in suitcase, my back won kpeme and I'm not 30 yet. It's even worse in traffic.

First of all, I don't think 189cm is that tall. Also, I'm suspecting most of these buses are shipped in from Asia where the minimum height is the lowest in the world.

Tall Nigerian working class, how do you cope?

Bto 189 is extremely tall

I'm the same height. Front seat is the first option .... then a seat next to the sliding door. Also you can try getting a lift from a private car going your way ... get into conversation about your plight ... and try to make it a regular thing but you must offer to help buy petrol. How long does it take to get to work?

These things are part of the reason why there are no more sane persons in Lagos anymore, any 'sane' person in Lagos is a fool.
Anyway op avoid small to medium busses, korope etc look for those tall yellow danfo 5 seater and always enter the front seat at the drivers part.

In a city with over 20 million people, any sane person is a fool? You do well.

People with that height don't see their self as being tall, more like average especially if you're a guy.

OP always target the passenger seat at the front where the driver sits. There is more space for tall men like you there.

It's worse even when you want to buy a car, I had to go for an SUV instead of the normal ones I prefer.

Leg room, head room, I have stayed bent for the duration of an entire journey because I couldn't sit straight, no head room.
I'm 193cm... All you said is true. Though I'm not in Lagos but even in the staff bus I board to work, there are only like 3 possible seats I can barely comfortably sit down.
When I was mobile, had to opt for an MPV as my first car for leg room.
If them dash me Corolla sef, I no fit use am. So I'm very selective.

Yes, most of those buses are shipped from Korea, China and Japan. Unfortunately, our people did not increase the height before final assembling. Manage am like that or join an organisation that subscribed to ShuttlersNg or get your own form of transportation.

I am 196m and I have never seen my height as an issue in public transport cos I it's just a temporary discomfort.

Neither do I start insisting on front seats. But my body is quite proportional, which means even though I am taller than you, you might have have longer legs than me.

But now, I have taken public transport like 3 times in over 2 years.

If you can’t afford a car, buy a motorcycle.
You’d get some early 2000s motorcycle for about 1m and lesser in Ladipo or Oyingbo(What Nigerians call power bike).Register in a riding school. Get used riding gear and rain gears too. You can join those people doing contributions to help with saving.
Back problem is something you don’t wanna have early in life. It never goes away. In the meantime , dedicate time for yoga and other forms of stretching.
Thank me later.
Just so you know, the average height of the Japanese is about 171cm while that of Nigerians is 167cm.

Those mini buses are called Kei cars and aren’t meant for public transportation. We only converted them into such because it’s cheaper in maintenance.

I'm 6'4 and a banker. grin grin it's not easy here o, a colleague of mine once told me to always be seated at all times in order for customers not to observing my height and physique. I didn't even listen to her, i would imagine that if I don't stand how would I move about to do things. The thing is i do what I do to live, survive and be successful. I don't listen to what people say or what people say behind my back. cos how you look or what you do never satisfies them. So why bother trying to impress

Since I lost my job, I refused to get another one because of these and many more. I suffered in Lagos unfortunately, people don't understand the level of suffering. They want me to go back to work as soon as possible. Apart from that, some CEOs or recruiters feels intimidated by your height, they see you as someone they may not be able to control. If you have hight, it's evidence you are destined to be rich... Find a way to make the money and enjoy the glory of height. I pray I achieve this as soon as possible.

I hate being in this situation. I remember when it happened, I stepped out of the car and my ankle almost got twisted the moment I stepped my foot on the ground. I was damn lucky.

Tall Nigerian working class, how do you cope?

Carefully select the buses you enter.
Target the front seat.
Sit next to slim people or sit close to the door.
Pay for two seats if you need more room for your long legs.

What do you want fat people to say now?
