Nsala soup is the king of soups. Followed by Egusi Soup. No Yoruba soup deserves to be on the list by the way.

God bless you for that truth.

People just pour oil into a pot and call it soup.

That's the kind of shitty soup they used to train something like Tilumbu, who's now messing up the country

Hausa:
Oha soup and Ofe Onugbu (bitter leaf soup) remains my best soup.
To be my best soup means to be cooked with Ede (cocoyam), and not all those oats, custard or whatever that people use to thicken it.

2. Interesting to note is that I enjoyed Efo when I lived for some years in the Surulere National Stadium before shops were demolished.
Omo, once I tasted that Efo, I never looked back. I guess the woman was good. Because I recall tasting it somewhere else years later and it didn't re-enact memories for me.

3. Interesting to note again is that back in school, my bunk mate from a town called Ede, who was staying on top of me, though he was young and was in 100L, was a big fan of Gbegiri. What I wondered was that I was in 400L (and far older) and had never cooked a soup in my life, and a 100L boy was cooking this soup at expert level. It dawned on me that I learnt nothing coming from home, lol. Many years later, I still neva cook one single soup.

4. On a visit to Ughelli, after decades of hearing about Banga up and down, I later got to taste the soup. What got me confused was why this Banga soup (it was so premium to the people) was much more expensive than other soups despite not being particularly special in taste to me. It would turn out that the Banga soup was the same soup we called Ofe Akwu (Palm fruit soup) in the East. Except while we ate ours with Rice, they ate theirs with Eba (and theirs didn't have the luxury of vegetables as ours).

5. Living in the north east in those days, I tasted this special northern premium soup called Mia Kwuka. I didn't eat it enough times to remember what it tastes like, unfortunately.

Interesting.

XAUBulls:

Efo riro is a generic name for different types of soups. There are more than ten different types of efo riro soups.

Also, the Yorubas have more than 20 different types of very rich and tasty regional soups from the Eastern parts of Yorubaland [Okun, Ekiti, Ondo, Osun, etc] to the Westernmost parts of Yorubaland in Benin Republic/Togo.

lol at having up to 20 soups as a tribal conglomerate being supposed to be a flex. I know you from other threads, innit, but come on. 20 soups with a big help from the more nutritious variety from eastern Yorualand (from middle Osun to Ekiti). Is that it?

Funny enough, Yoruba does not really have soup. This is what makes Nigeria a special country. The SE and SS have variety of soups, but we don't have except ewedu, gbegiri... However, there are some soups that are unique soups that are special to some villages, but they're not known in the city.

Ondo soups being better-known to the rest of the country wouldn’t be a bad thing. But until Ibadan and Ijebu-Ode people learn to cook egusi with onugbu, they’ve still got a long, long way to go.

Truth be told, the SS and SE cook egusi better than us. They make them in varieties over there. However, Yoruba too are also trying their best with few different version.

Again, Ondo and Ekiti people (and the peripheral borders adjacent to Osun, yada-yada) are somewhat exempt from these generalisations. I’ll always defend them when it comes to having variety of food, because they do. And if any state outside Anambra, Akwa Ibom and Benue is known for pounded yam and egusi as a combo, it’s Ekiti. It’s even a breakfast staple for them. So I try and leave eastern Yorubas out of it when it comes to the whole “Yorubas no-get soup” argument. I’m very aware those two states do it much better than the rest, and Osun does well (not just “tries”) when it comes to egusi, too. They do well. So, again, I don’t want to generalise when it comes to making good egusi because that’s actually quite a general thing. Egusi is a very important seed in Igboland, it’s very important in Benue, in much of the south-south and some of the eastern SW, and that’s just what we know generally about Nigerian egusi, in all its variations.

I’d multi-quote but y’know. Nairaland doesn’t have that option.
