Restructure Nigeria, turn six zones into federating units, Gani Adams charges Tinubu

•recommends Abuja as Governing Centre

The Generalissimo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, on Friday expressed disappointment that despite President Bola Ahmed Tinubu being an apostle of federalism, the country has not moved forward.

Iba Gani Adams who stated this while speaking with journalists during the 10th World Congress of Oodua Progressive Union, OPU, in Osogbo, Osun state, therefore agitated for restructuring without wasting time.

He remarked, “already we have six zones. Turn those zones into federating units, and let Abuja be a Governing Centre for the country. All the zones should be called regions or provinces. The province will then have state and local government areas. We need four structures of governance.”

All the four structures will have their policing structures. With that, Nigeria will move forward. That is our suggestion in the Oodua Progressive Union and Oodua People’s Congress. When we continue to keep quiet, the President may not know what is going on.

“And those regular politicians may not tell him the truth. But we, as opinion leaders, will tell him the truth. He is our brother. This was what we said when President Goodluck Jonathan was in office, we said it when President Umaru Ya’ardua was in office.”

He however maintained that the only way to resolve insecurity issues in Nigeria is for the federal government to embrace true federalism, affirming that no genuine economic development could be achieved if the federal government fails to restructure the imbalance in the country.

“We know President Bola Tinubu as an apostle of federalism, hence, should not jettison the idea now that he is leading the country.

“As one of the country’s opinion leaders, we must remind President Bola Tinubu about the need to restructure. He should remember when he was a Governor of Lagos State, he was an apostle of federalism.

“We learn a lot from him about the benefits of true federalism as a governor. Since then, the issues remain, and Nigeria has not moved forward.

“We have used a lot of economic policies that do not work in Nigeria. We have used a lot of security strategies in Nigeria that have failed. We brought Okonjo-Iweala, but we couldn’t move forward. We brought a sound-minded Sanusi Lamido to run CBN, but he could not resolve the problem.

“We have brought a lot of Nigerians from abroad to solve our problem but all efforts so far failed. We have had a lot of Inspector General of Police, yet we do not have a good security network.

“In terms of infrastructure, we have had several good Ministers of Works and Housing, yet we could not get good policies to solve the challenges. How can we move forward? As a citizen, we have to proffer solutions and remind those in government that they are there to solve problems. How do they solve the problem? They have to restructure Nigeria,”he added.

Even the blind can see that this is the only viable way for Nigeria to get out of this mess. Everyone fend for yourself! This will encourage a lot of investments and Govt would have no option but to think of how to drive its state to generate funds. In no time, jobs would be flowing everywhere or hunger would bite very welll to the people who votes in there ancestors because of a cup of rice. I just Dey explain for people wey no really understand advantages of restructuring.

The North started restructuring by introducing another constitution. They say it is their right to have sharia in a Federation and a Southern president granted them their wish.

Now the South is yearning for fiscal autonomy and devolution of power. Let any man prove that Is against the constitution in a federalism.

The truth is that Nigeria has lied so much to itself without success, not it is the right time to take the bitter pill. Nigeria must be restructured whether the North likes it or not.

The unity that accommodates Sharia should also accommodate regional autonomy, which was the basic foundation of this country, let no man deny it

The North are threatened already. We cannot move forward with this current arrangement. We cannot tolerate a mallam or Alhaji in power again. Regionalism is the key!

Well said…

Nigeria's root problem is foundational. Due to the demographics, unfortunately we are people who uphold our ethnic, tribal and religious affinities above national identity and ideologies. If nothing else proves my assertion I believe the sentimental support of the Yorubas to validate illegality by pushing a dubious character like Tinubu as President, the lingering injustice on Nnamdi Kanu by government disobeying court orders, Biafra agitation, Niger delta agitation and the Fulani herdsmen bloody pogrom validates it. What we need is justice for the country to heal there so much oppression and injustice in Nigeria. I strongly feel that we can achieve this through restructuring.

For peace to reign and to foster prosperity, we need a new decentralized system of government. I hope and wish that Nigerians will push for restructuring instead of waiting for 2027 to participate in another rigged election that will bring back our oppressors….. Time is running out for Nigeria…..

Restructuring will definitely make Nigeria develop. Every government will sit up and be creative. The current setup encourages laziness and today we are facing the harsh reality.
Restructure Nigeria and see real positive changes...see massive growth.

I have made up my mind about Nigeria, we all know the problems of our country and we all know the solutions but who will be bold enough to take the bull by the horn.Otunba Gani Adams has spoken very well and he should know because he is an insider on certain things.
I sincerely believe that there are very few Nigerian politician alive or dead that really understand the thing called Restructuring or as I prefer to call it Devolution of powers like the incumbent president Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu
This is a man who took the Federal Government under President Obasanjo to court on a lot of issues when Democracy returned in 1999 and he won a lot of those battles
Issues such as Creation of Local Governments,Creation of Traffic Police,Waterways Control and even taxes, the charge was led by the amiable Vice president His Excellency Prof Yemi Osinbajo. They created the path for the great strides and Independent voice that always came from Lagos during those years
God has brought Asiwaju into Nigeria for a time like this,Nigeria can't be restructured over night or in 8 years but he can set in motion the wheels that can never be turned back if he is willing to do it
All he needs to do is to look at the Exclusive list and begin to give the states more powers and more more money to run those responsibilities

Things like Roads,Rails,Control of Minerals,Security are low hanging fruits that will start a sequence of events that will change the course of Nigeria

Stop heaping all the blames on the north all the time. Tinubu is the president and APC holds the majority of both houses.

If Tinubu is ready to implement the El-Rufai report on restructuring, it will certainly enjoy a bi-partisan backing because this is something the South South states (who have mostly PDP representatives) have always wanted.

Why do I have the feeling that even if we restructure, with these same sets of politicians we still going nowhere

These guys just want to be feeding fat on the country's resources

Imagine that Lagos alone is doing fine than about 50% states in Nigeria, but all governors and political appointees are living large

If we can be prudent and bring in accountability perhaps we might not really need the restructuring

Why are Nigerian leaders so against restructuring when its obvious that's the only thing that can make Nigeria move forward or achieve anything tangible?

I don't know why I prefer the word 'True Federalism' compared to the word "Restructuring'.

One definition of madness is doing same thing repeatedly & expecting a different result. smiley

Each successive government in Nigeria has turned out to be worse than its predecessor.
It's high time we tried something different, & Restructuring that will give rise to True Federalism is the way forward.

Every well-meaning Nigerian knows this is the only way to move Nigeria forward.

Tinubu has been shouting restructuring since the 1990s. In fact, he had problem with Obj because he wanted to restructure Lagos local govt but Obj refused.

So why has Tinubu kept mum now that he is in a position to do what he has been shouting for ages? Was it all pretense as a negotiating tool?

Are you thinking what am thinking 🤔

Although a good idea

Meanwhile watch as northerners, out of ignorance, object to restructuring.

While struggling for the actualization of this regional government system and while condemning the north for not wanting to see that happen, let’s also curse the mumu Igbo man (Aguiyi Ironsi) who scrapped the system for his selfish, tribalist interests. Nigeria would have been much more prosperous and happier if he hadn’t taken that disastrous selfish decision. Las las, na ibo put us for this mess yet they are the ones crying for devolution of power now undecided

We need to restructure without doubt. Even the advocate of the current demonic structure know that but won't allow it because of greed.

Nigeria is like a diode or an optocoupler. Things can flow from south to the north at no cost, but will never flow from north to south without someone paying for it from their pocket.
