From available information about our national grain reserve's capacity here, here and here, our strategic grain reserve has a total capacity of around one million metric tonnes. (1 million tonnes).
That's the maximum storage capacity and doesn't mean all silos are filled with grains. Perusing the available articles further, the actual grain reserve is estimated to be around 300, 000 metric tonnes by me.

Now we may or may not all agree that volume is enough to interrupt the forces of supply and demand in a market for 200 million people and affect prices of grain positively for consumers.

Well, I have a suggestion for the grain reserve to be filled and stand a better chance of helping Nigerians. It involves importation of grains into the strategic grain reserves.
Research shsow that corn and wheat are two very nutritious and vital grains. Corn goes for $220 per ton while wheat is higher and averages around $280 per ton. Both average $250.
A million tonne of both is $250 million and eight million ton is $2Bn.

Instead of subsidizing petrol with far more than that this year alone, why not just, with a fraction of the subsidy, import grains into our silos. That eight million tonnes will do a lot because as it stands today, what govt have been releasing as intervention maxes out at a hundred thousand tonnes. If a hundred thousand tonne can do wonders, 50 times of that will do some miracle for Nigerians.

Instead of watching local harvest get wasted by diseases and rot away in amateur storages, let govt buy them and use it as part of the grain reserve to encourage aggressive farming locally.

Let printed cash be used to improve agricultural output and not used to largely pay idle hands in civil service. Use 30% of printed cash to give farmers input and the remaining 70% to buy the output or harvest. That's way money and goods are created side by side unlike when govt pays idle employees and 'workers'.

We are just unserious in this country. The government knows just what to do but they'll rather pretend to be unaware. The Kano state government days ago went about closing down private warehouses of individuals who stocked products. Let them govt to sokoto and buy and start selling

You people should stop all these of food reserves bla bla bla. The problem is rice farmers; if the price of rice crashes today, every other food stuff will come crashing down. Did you go to the market to buy any food stuff and there was a scarcity?? The rising food prices are simply due to heartless sellers who are using the opportunity of rising dollar rate to hike prices arbitrarily.

State governors should be tasked with filling them up at minimum. This should be one of the tasks of governors.

Excellent idea, but it should be a temporary measure, because without curbing insecurity, excessive importation will kill local farming....
The printing of cash for farmers is a good idea despite inflation, if it can have good oversight, that money will go straight into a value chain and the rewards will be benefited, without good oversight, the fate of tha anchor borrowers program will befall it .

Do you know what will happen if you take away $2 Billion from Nigeria's economy right now?

1) Why not deploy NYSC members to farms to start massive cultivation of corn and wheat ,both of which takes about 90days to harvest?

2) Set-up National Food Company via PPP to buy made-in-Nigerian food items like rice, Cassava flour, Poundo Yam and meat directly from the Farmers and sell at subsidised rates to the all Civil servants, Military and Para military officers while the cost is deducted dire from from their salaries just as we arranged subsidised healthcare in form of NHIS.
In the second phase, all employees of banks and companies with verifiable identities and data bases can also buy from the scheme while the cost are deducted from their salaries.

In the third phase, workers in the Informal sector can also buy from the scheme while their association e.g NURTW collect the money upfront from their members and pay to the company.


In this way, we will eliminate the middle men, patronise the farmers and help the masses.

it should be temporary of course.
As they import this year, reach out to producer that you are willing to buy triple their average output. That can inspire production. Start buying from them into the silos and as the food piles up. Export and make the dollar into govt coffer then watch Naira appreciate.
