Interesting thread.

Good points by nearly all posters about how the cost of production is central to pricing decisions. Strange how when some of us ask the same question about production costs in the petroleum industry, some people pretend not to know what we are talking about.

MASTERCHIEF0847:
Increase in cost of production, transportation etc... that is what you get in a dollar-dependent economy.
You guys are just so funny, how is dollar dependent now the cost of all this rubbish. you all should realize that the naira has loosed over 3x its previous value. If we had gotten that Chinese currency swap deal years back it would have still been same effect today. So you all think dollar is going up, Euro is going up Chinese yuan is going up even CEFA is going up, what kind of rubbish thinking is all this. So because Naira has loosed it monetary value you all also want cement and other commodities to lose their value too.

Lifemanage:
Dangote definitely has nothing good to offer Nigerians as the richest man. He will soon face the wrath of the masses
Continue your hate filled mentality for the rich. it is the masses who will face the wrath of their useless decision to vote this rubbish.

Feldie:
all your mouth is government government government. This is why everyone keeps fleecing you because they know you will leave the real culprit and start attacking government that are chilling in Abuja without even the slightest care about you. If Nigerians start boycotting these people hiking prices, they will stop but they know we don't have sense
Why don't you start the boycotting, you are just a huge joke. Even if they bring imported cement to Nigeria, they price will be far more than this. If Dangote cement monetary value decide to drop with the falling naira, foreign countries like Niger will sweep up all the cement been produced in Nigeria and its citizens will not see any to buy, and if that has happened all we need to do was to increase production, thereby exporting more cement which will in turn improve the value of the naira.

Dealer are exporting it to neighboring countries because their currency is stronger than our own at the moment so they are making a lot on each bag of cement, that leads to demand higher than supply in Nigeria hence the price increase
The same is happening to food at the moment, northerners are selling to neighboring countries
Exchange rate need to go down otherwise neighboring countries will start raiding Nigeria to get cheap products there by creating scarcity and price increase in Nigeria
Vey correct, but most Nigerians do not want to listen to sound counsel.

Otiwaikuku:

The major raw material for the making of cement is mined here in Nigeria. The machines you mentioned is not always imported and workers to handle the machines are Nigerians.I can’t see any genuine reason why prices should increase by over 100%. Cement was once sold for 5400 few months back and now it’s over #12000.There is no bases to justify the increament.
So you are saying the value of cement should reduce with the value of the naira too. you all are a huge joke.

Cement production involves mining with heavy equipment that can only be imported as well as it's spare parts and paid for in dollars, those responsible for repairs are also expatriates who will not be paid in naira, add cost of diesel for running the factory at over 1000 naira per liter as well as importing gypsum and others then you will understand. Pay a visit to the quarry of any cement manufacturer then you will understand cement production is capital intensive.
do they import the heavy equipment every hour?...I stoped reading when I saw this point

Please I need someone to explain it fully to me - like as if I'm 10yrs old.

Why exactly is the price of cement going up this way?? What exactly really happened?

Is the price only affecting Just Dangote Cement?
Or it also affected all the other cement brands like Bua and Elephant.??

Alternative electricity eg diesel powered generators in the absence of no electricity

Multiplicity of taxes

Increased transport cost due to imported pms and diesel

Lack of Accessible roads to most areas in the country

Insecurity

Police tax/bribe along the highway

Inability to access FX to purchase equipments or raw materials not available in the country

All these are factored in the production cost which leads to an increase in the price!

Until these issues are tackled sufficiently, prices will keep going up!

MASTERCHIEF0847:

BUA and LaFarge also increased the prices of their products too, BUA cement is even more expensive but it's okay you can continue with your Dangote-phobia...the poor like hating the rich grin
You clearly have no idea that limestone while available in Nigeria has to be mined using heavy machinery that guzzles diesel which sells for over 1000 naira per liter, and gypsum which is used in cement plants and it mostly imported in commercial quantities and paid in dollars which is very hard to come by in Nigeria and also cost of diesel for running the factory and transportation.
Person go just post crap because him get access to internet.
Control your coded envy and jealousy of Dangote. BUA too enjoys tax relief just like other heavy manufacturers like INNOSON but it's okay you can kee foaming from the mouth over Dangote a private businessman who is not responsible for policy formulations while ignoring the banza government you supported and voted for as well.

I'll go with your answer over those shouting increase in cost of diesel and dollar rate

As someone rightly said, diesel was selling around #1200 as at October last year and dollar was around #1350 or so, yet fuel was selling for #4800

I believe it's the same thing happening to foodstuffs that is happening to cement... It's now more profitable to export than to sell within Nigeria... Hence, you either agree to buy at the rate they'll sell to foreigners, or you leave them to sell to foreigners

This should have actually been a good thing if we were producing more than enough, atleast we'll get a lot of the needed forex
